Determine what you might like to study or major in at the university in Malaysia. Yes, many students after SPM or O-Levels are still confused about what to study.

Knowing which course you want to study will help in determining which university. Just like signature dishes for restaurants, certain private universities are famous for particular courses. Choosing the best university for that course would ensure that you benefit from their experience.

There are basically 2 pathways after SPM or O-Levels. You can either go for a Diploma course or Pre-University Course in Malaysia . “Pre” means before, therefore, “Pre-University” means the course that you take before entering into a university bachelors degree programme.

The common courses under Pre-University are STPM, A-Levels, Foundation, etc. Students after SPM or O-Levels who are not sure what to study at degree level can go for the Pre-University course in Malaysia like A-Levels, or Foundation and then proceed on to the degree.

Choosing the right Pre-University course that fits you would mean that you have to ask yourself which methods of assessment best suit you? Exams, coursework, practicals, group projects and presentations could all be in the mix in differing quantities. Every Pre-University course will include a % breakdown of assessment. You need to understand yourself and capabilities in order to decide which Pre-University course would best suit you.

Students who are sure of what they want to study after SPM or O-Levels can enter the Diploma course first. The Diploma pathway in Malaysia for students after SPM is 2 or 2.5 years and then enter into Year 2 of the Degree programme.

There are many types of diploma and Pre-University courses in Malaysia as well as hundreds of undergraduate majors to choose from. But knowing the right one for you is the most difficult decision. If you read this guide from start to finish, you’ll know the best courses that would suit you.

If you are not sure what to study, do ask a trained counsellor and always make decisions based on evidence and facts. The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. You can contact us for a free career test to help you understand yourself better so that you are able to make the right decision.

Step 2: Make a List of Criteria

Develop a list of criteria you want to use to evaluate and weed out colleges.

Part of finding the right college or university in Malaysia for you will, of course, be picking out the criteria that matters to most to you, and then seeing if any of the top private colleges or universities you’re looking at fit those criteria.

Develop a list of top private universities in Malaysia that is based on the most important criteria for your education. The criteria that you use to develop a list of the best colleges will depend on your personality, values, academic interests, and career goals.

Here’s a list of common criteria in choosing a top private university in Malaysia:

  • Diploma and degrees offered
  • Subjects offered in the diploma or degree (Are they relevant, up-to-date, and help you to achieve your career goals)
  • Accreditation by MQA and other relevant professional bodies in Malaysia
  • Type of programme (local degree, 3+0 UK or Australian degree, 4+0 American degree, degree transfer programme, etc)
  • Entry requirements (Branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements)
  • Location of the university
  • Size of the student population
  • Student culture (English-speaking environment, ambitious, serious about studies, lifestyle or party university, etc)
  • Public vs. Private (STPM is tougher and choice of course & university is determined by the government)
  • Costs (tuition, hostel, food, transportation, etc.)
  • Financial assistance (Scholarships, PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc)
  • Campus resources (labs, libraries, wifi, computer access, sports facilities, etc.)
  • Internship and co-op programs
  • Class size (Small class size for personal attention)
  • Faculty contact/classes taught by full-time qualified & experienced faculty
  • Quality/reputation/ranking of the private university in Malaysia
  • Safety (campus, community)
  • Make up of the student body (diversity, international students, gender, etc.)
  • Extra-curricular activities (Student organisations, clubs, sports, etc.)
  • Housing options (on-campus, off-campus apartments)
  • Student support services
  • Intake dates

Step 3: Compile a list of possible colleges and universities in Malaysia & Singapore

With at least some idea of the criteria that are important to you, begin the gathering phase. You can find college information in the universities’ brochures. You will surely also get suggestions from family, friends, and high school teachers and guidance counselors. You should also consider attending education fairs, university open days where you can actually meet representatives from the universities, as well as gather important literature.

Step 4: Gather all your resources and information about each private university you’re considering in Malaysia

If you don’t have all the information you need on a particular university, you should consider visiting the university’s Website. And most colleges offer some sort of virtual campus tour, so you can get an early taste of the look and feel of a college from your computer. You can also talk to us at EduSpiral Consultant Services and search our blog for detailed information on the courses and private universities in Malaysia and colleges in Singapore.

Step 5: Use the criteria from Step 2 to narrow your list of colleges to a manageable number.

This number will vary widely among teens and their families, depending in part on how many you and your family can realistically visit. You should narrow them to about 3 or 5 to consider.

Step 6: Visit the colleges & universities on your list from Step 5.

The best way to really get a feel for a university is by visiting the campus, taking a tour, meeting with students & lecturers, attending a class, reading the campus newspaper, eating in the cafeteria, etc. You have to feel “at home” at the place where you will spend the next four years of your life, so visiting is important.

For more information and strategies, read our article, EduSpiral University Campus Tours to Help Students Choose the Best Universities. If some universities on your list are just too far away to make a trip, then you can add EduSpiral on Facebook and we can show you videos and photos of the campus and its facilities.

Step 7: Apply to the university that made the cut after the first six steps.

Now that you have gone through all the steps, you are ready to apply to the university of your choice. EduSpiral Consultant Services is an officially appointed representative of many top private colleges and universities in Malaysia and Singapore to assist students in their application process.
