Receiving international awards is not something new for students of KBU International College. This is evident with student Ee
Wil Ken bagging a notable award, “Emerging Designer of the Year (Student Category) – awarded by International Design Award (IDA).
The award was given in honor of the “Mecanique Toy Store” – a proposal created to renovate a double-storey retail store in 1Utama.
“The Mechanique Toy Store is one of my college projects where I get to explore a type of subculture called “steampunk”. My concept is to transform the retail store atmosphere into a display which exists on its own time and dimension,” said Ee.
Elaborating further, he said: “I have attempted to divide the free space available with specifically-designed interactive toy which spans from floor to the ceiling”
“Each toy display stand is interactive and has a light bulb with movement sensor that glows brighter when approached. Hence, as people visit the toy store, the lights will be brighter or dimmer, creating a sort of time phasing machine,” said Ee.
Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery.
The International Design Award (IDA) which was held for the fifth consecutive year was aimed at recognising, celebrating and promoting legendary design visionaries and to uncover emerging talent in Architecture, Interior, Product, Graphic, and Fashion Design.
“In 2009, one of my seniors, Andrew Chong Chin Chuan emerged as the winner for the Commercial Design (Student’s Interior Design Category),” said Ee.
“That has inspired me to take part in the competition as I wanted to give myself a chance,” said Ee.
He also talked highly about the degree programme, BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design which trained him on computer-aided design software.
“I have learnt a lot in terms of design creativity and variety of materials,” he added.
“The facilities provided in KBU such as the library which houses a collection of design books is also very informative,” he added.
KBU’s School of Design also offers BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (3+0), BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons)
Furniture and Product Design, Foundation in Art & Design, Diploma in Interior Design, Diploma in Interactive Design and Diploma in Advertising Design.
