Nilai University Hospitality students reach finals of Ultimate Monin Cup 2013

Staff and students from Nilai U’s School of Hospitality & Tourism take pride in their two finalists who had displayed their best performance during the finals of the Monin Cup.

Nilai University (Nilai U) hospitality students reach finals of Ultimate Monin Cup 2013 thanks to lecturer’s dedication.

Nilai University’s hospitality & tourism students’ hard work paid off when they advanced to the finals of Ultimate Monin Cup 2013.

This was the first time for both Andre Tan Kian Wah (Diploma in Culinary Arts) and Jason Tee Boon Lee (Diploma in Hotel Management) who competed in flairtending and mocktail categories respectively.

“I am extremely happy to become a finalist as I only got to the semifinal stage last year,” says the 20-year-old Andre. “It was a personal achievement for me. Though I didn’t win, a great part of it was expanding my network and friends through the competition, and this is especially important in the hospitality field.”

Both students trained long hours in preparation for the competition, including

day-long sessions during semester breaks.

There were no complaints though as the entire team practiced together and spurred each other on.

Both finalists were emphatic in their praise of their lecturer, Aliya Marnina Amirudin, who is a prime mover in getting hospitality students prepped for competitions.

“Our friends and lecturer-mentor, Ms Aliya, were with us all the way during our training sessions, including during the semester breaks, where we spent around seven to eight hours daily perfecting our routines,” says Andre.

Andre Tan Kian Wah (Nilai U Diploma in Culinary Arts) finished in the top four in the final of the Ultimate Monin Cup 2013 in the flairtending category.

“Ms Aliya has given us continuous support and she got me back on track whenever I felt lost my way. Her unflinching commitment and passion greatly inspired us.

Nilai University’s School of Hospitality and Tourism definitely has the most dedicated lecturers!” claims Jason.

He also wanted to thank his teammates and university mates who turned up in force to support the duo during the finals.

“Our friends are amazing supporters. I think they literally brought the roof down chanting for our names during the final,” laughs Jason.

“Winning would have been a bonus, but Andre and I are not disappointed as we had given it our best. Most importantly, we enjoyed the experience and it was a great platform to hone our skills.”

Jason Tee Boon Lee (Nilai U Diploma in Hotel Management) who competed for the mocktail category credits his dedicated lecturers from School of Hospitality & Tourism for giving them the confidence to do well in competitions.

Jason, who is also the President of Nilai U’s Hospitality Society, believes that competing prepares students for the high-pressure environment of the real working world.

“As Nilai University hospitality students, we are very lucky to have been encouraged to take part in various competitions by our lecturers.

It’s not just about coming out top, it’s also about everything else – your effort, inspiration, enthusiasm,  desire and most importantly, what you learn from each competition,” he concludes.

Nilai University School of Hospitality & Tourism actively encourages its students to take part in competitions as means of instilling discipline and exposing them to pressure-cooker scenarios.

Nilai University Accounting & Finance Degree student wins BDO Award

“I had expected to get a first class honours degree but I was really surprised to

find that I had also won the BDO Award at this year’s convocation,” admits Choo Yau Sean (Nilai University BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance).

He was referring to the prize awarded by BDO Malaysia, a member firm of BDO International, the world’s fifth largest network of professional services firms.

Given out annually, the BDO Award, comprising RM1,000 in cash, is granted each year to the student graduating with B.A. (Hons) in Accounting and Finance degree at Nilai University, obtaining the highest CGPA in the programme.

The prize win was unexpected given that the Klang native very nearly ended up as an engineer having selected engineering subjects in his pre-university programme at another private university in Subang Jaya.

But everything changed when Nilai Universty (Nilai U) offered the young lad a High Achiever Scholarship covering his entire tuition and accommodation fees.

This was due to his exemplary results in SPM (10As and 1B) and also in his pre-university South Australian Matriculation programme. At that point, he made the bold decision to opt for the accounting and finance degree at Nilai U.

“In the beginning, I must admit to being quite miserable as I had no friends in Nilai U. Also, I was finding the programme quite tough as I had no solid foundation in accounting,” says the 21-year-old.

But with a never-say-die attitude coupled with a disciplined approach to his

studies, Yau Sean managed to catch up with his classmates and soon began to find his footing in the programme. “I have to thank the lecturers for guiding me.

Nilai U lecturers always have time for students and go to great lengths to ensure that everyone understand the lessons.

From private tutorials to extra assignments, the lecturers are ready and willing to help all students who are serious about their studies,” says Yau Sean. He did not suffer socially for long either as his outgoing personality saw that he soon made plenty of friends.

“I encourage all students to join in the extracurricular activities as it is the best way to make new friends. It also helps fill your time after class and these activities help you blow off steam. I believe having an active social life on campus is crucial to a student’s success,” he counsels.

Yau Sean busied himself with basketball and volleyball as well as jogging daily around the lakeside trek and around Nilai U’s picturesque campus. “Sports instilled in me a strong sense of discipline and willpower.

For instance, I drive myself to run faster and further whenever I jog. I apply the same attitude to my studies.”

Yau Sean says he has no regrets switching courses and joining Nilai U. “The campus is so peaceful and quiet which is perfect for studies. Also, staying on campus, there is no hassle getting to class on time.

At my previous place of study, I had to get up as early as 5am just to secure a parking spot. I have even had my car towed way for illegal parking and that is just stress I can do without,” he frowns.

In the meantime, Yau Sean is keen to carve a career as a chartered accountant. With his degree offering seven exemptions from Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) exams, he is keen to complete this portion of his professional training as soon as possible, perhaps with backing from a big accounting firm.

Having won the BDO Award, Yau Sean is hopeful that he will receive a job offer

from the prestigious firm. “Winning the prize is probably the best pitch for a job with BDO International.

I hope they make me an offer and I am sure I will not let them down,” he says.

Given his positive approach and never-say-die attitude, it’s almost a given that this young man will succeed in achieving his goals.

Studying Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at Nilai University

Eng Soon Min

An interview with Eng Soon Min from Batu Caves, Selangor who is pursuing the Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering at Nilai University after completing his Diploma. The Advanced Diploma is equivalent to the degree and is conferred by Kingston University, UK.

Eng Soon Min gave up a steady income with a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) organisation based in the old Subang Airport to further his studies. The graduate of Nilai University’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme says that losing his income for one year is a small price to pay. In fact, it was his work experience that opened his eyes to the need for more knowledge in the field of aircraft maintenance. The young lad registered for the Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering (which acts as a one year top up for Kingston University’s BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering).

You graduated from Nilai University (Nilai U) in Diploma in Aircraft

Maintenance Engineering and landed yourself a job. Why do you return here to further your studies in Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering?

I did my On-The-Job-Training (OJT) with a smaller organisation and was retained by them. During my two years there, I was asked to do many things besides maintenance work, as is the case with smaller outfits. All staff are expected be multi-taskers. It was then did I realise that there so

much more to learn about this industry. I had to do planning, warehousing and quality assurance, areas which are covered in Nilai U’s Advanced Diploma programme. Don’t get me wrong, I am a very hands-on person and enjoy doing maintenance work. But I would like to have the option of venturing into other areas as well.

Why is taking a step ahead with this Advanced Diploma important to you?

Too many students seem to think that getting a European Aviation Safety Agency

(EASA) license is the be all, end all. Of course, getting the license is very important. That will take three to five years working experience. But getting a degree is only an additional year and I am confident that employers will notice someone with a degree when interviewing potential candidates. I can work anywhere in the world with this degree and that makes it very worthwhile. I’m already planning to do Masters in Aircraft Engineering. I read in a newspaper that the Kingston University degree will allow me to pursue a Masters

degree, having a Masters will give me the option of entering the world of academia.

What is your advice to school leavers who would like to join aviation field, especially Aircraft Maintenance?

Don’t join the programmes because they have cool-sounding names. In the field of aircraft maintenance, you will be

responsible for people’s lives. The tiniest mistake or oversight can cause many deaths. Because of this, airlines and

MRO organisations will only pick the best candidates, and having a degree is an effort to prove that he is worthy addition to their team. I believe that there are many opportunities in the aircraft maintenance industry. To those with a strong foundation in physics and like to work with their hands, do give the Nilai U programmes serious consideration.

What is the best part of being involved in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?

Having worked for two years in this industry, I can tell you there it is a very challenging and exciting field. There is no greater satisfaction that seeing a plane you worked on and inspect takes off and make its journey safely.

The Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering is a one year top up programme being offered to students who have completed their Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme from Nilai U or EASA license holder in

category B. This programme allows the student to progress and gain a higher level of understanding in several areas, including in aerospace technology which takes their understanding beyond the basics.

Students also gain career beneficial exposure from a number of management-oriented, business applications and quality modules. The qualification gained will prepare the graduate with skills to manage a team and ability to deal with uncertainties.

The graduates of this Advanced Diploma will receive both an advanced diploma from Nilai U and a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, UK. If students successfully complete the programme with a second class honours, they can progress on to post-graduate studies in the UK.

3 young ladies in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering from Nilai University share their university experience

Nency Philip Selvaraju (L), Deenadayalini Retnam (R) and Hemammalini Murugan (standing) are living proof of girls being able to succeed in a male-dominated programme.

An interview with 3 young ladies pursuing their dream in the male dominated field of aircraft maintenance. Nency Philip Selvaraju, 21, Hemamalini P Murugan, 20 and Deenadayalini Retnam, 19 are taking the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at Nilai University.

Why did you choose this programme?

Deenadayalini : My cousin brother is a qualified aircraft maintenance engineer. He took me to his workplace to see for myself what it is like. I found the work to be interesting and after speaking to the supervisors there, I was pretty sure a girl could manage as an aircraft maintenance engineer.

Nency              : My first dream was to see the world and pursue a pilot’s license. But the high costs led me to the path of Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. Though unable to be a pilot, I still wanted to work with airplanes. This programme allows me

to do so and carve a lucrative career in the aviation field. However, I have not completely given up on dreams of flying. I will apply for a scholarship to do the pilot’s licence after I completed this diploma. For now, I want to ace my EASA examinations and seek for a scholarship or financial assistance to allow me to do degree in the United Kingdom.

Hemamalini     :  I also dreamt of being a pilot, but my small stature did not meet the minimum requirements Nilai UniversityHangarfor trainee pilots. But now in this programme, my lecturers were quick to assure me that my small frame is going to be a great advantage as I can crawl into tight, confined spaces. Not everyone can do that, so I am hoping employers will also look at me as a unique aircraft maintenance engineer with special abilities.

What is your motivation to excel in this male-dominated programme and field?

Nency              : I want to show that the girls can be just as good, if not better than the

guys. I have always been very comfortable working with tools as I grew up helping my dad in his workshop fixing tractors. My humble working class roots in the plantation estates has motivated me to do my very best as my parents are working extra jobs to help achieve my dream of becoming a fully licensed engineer. Even my relatives are helping out financially, so I have to work hard and not let them down. Everyone in my estate is very proud of me for trying to become an aircraft maintenance engineer.

Hemamalini      : Although girls are still a minority in this field, that shouldn’t stop anyone with the inclination and the right attitude from applying. To the lecturers’ credit, they do not discriminate and always pick students for projects and class leaders based on their abilities.

Deenadayalini : Later when we continue to degree level, it allows graduates to apply for supervisory and managerial positions later on in their

careers. They will not necessarily be hangar-bound for the rest of their working lives, though if you love airplanes, that is not a bad thing. I believe even more parents will overcome their preconceived notions about girls in this field.

Though the ladies make up less than 1% of the total number of aircraft maintenance engineering students in Nilai U, the numbers are growing. Recently, a pathway to earn a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, United Kingdom, is introduced by Nilai U. The Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering is a one year top up programme being offered to students who have completed their Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering programme from Nilai U or EASA license holder in category B. This means the Advanced Diploma graduates will receive both an advanced diploma from Nilai U and a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University. If students successfully complete the programme with a second class honours, they can progress on to post-graduate studies in the UK.

Get the best degree in Aircraft Engineering awarded by Kingston University, UK at Nilai University, Malaysia

Dr Peter Barrington, Head of Kingston University’s School of Aerospace and Aircraft Engineering, shares the benefits of completing the one year Advanced Diploma (top-up degree programme) after the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

Dr Peter Barrington, Head of Kingston University’s School of Aerospace and Aircraft Engineering

Why choose Nilai University as your partner in offering this degree?

We are only interested in working with quality partners, Kingston University must be assured of the standards applied. We have already visited Nilai University three times and are very happy with what we have seen. There is a good match in terms of aircraft engineering subject areas. The key factor is that Nilai University conducts its EASA exams through CAAi which makes us very confident in the standard of knowledge. In addition, the quality systems that Nilai University do have in place and its experience of working with a number of foreign universities made it particularly reassuring to us.

Please explain how this degree works?

Kingston University offers a three-year BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering. Students do a two-year foundation degree at one of our five partner institutions in the UK and they do the final year at Kingston University. Our Foundation degree is based on the EASA B licence syllabus which is very similar to Nilai U’s diploma programme. There are some differences between the programmes and we are introducing a bridging module to cover these aspects.

So Nilai U’s Dipploma programme plus the bridging module is equivalent to Kingston University’s Foundation

programme. Students then only need to do a one-year top up to get the degree.

According to the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) specifications, one year of post diploma study is equivalent to an Advanced Diploma.

But in the UK context, the Advanced Diploma is equivalent Honours degree. This means graduates will receive a both an advanced diploma from Nilai U and a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University. And if students

successfully complete the programme with a second class honours, they can progress on to post-graduate studies in the UK.

Can a student proceed to do this Degree in Aircraft Engineering if s/he has completed a Diploma in a different engineering field?

No. this is because the articulation agreement between Nilai U and Kingston University requires a match of curriculum.

Nilai is the only university in Malaysia with its own hangar and planes

Nilai is the only university in Malaysia with its own hangar and planes

Both Nilai University’s diploma and Kingston’s Foundation

programme in this field are based on part 66 of EASA syllabus.

Can Nilai U students opt to finish their degree in the UK after completing Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?

The top up degree is available to those who have completed Nilai University’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and the bridging modules. To go to the UK, a student will need to complete the bridging modules and also pass an English proficiency test as well. It’s a lot less expensive to complete the degree programme at Nilai U.

If someone wanted the experience of doing one year in the UK, the more sensible

option would be to complete the honours degree at Nilai University then proceed to do the MSc in Aircraft Engineering at Kingston University.

In your opinion, how will students benefit by continuing their studies to degree level?

The basic EASA diploma is about getting the licence which is a key qualification which allows the person to sign off on aircraft worthiness. This top up degree is more to move people on to supervisory roles within the industry. It is about

managing a team and having the ability to deal with uncertain issues. Initially, employers will be keen to know if a person has gotten their EASA licence. But they will also need people to lead the team and the degree holder will come across as more confident and knowledgeable. Doing a degree is with long term career options and rewards in mind.

A UK degree is internationally-recognised and this allows the person to move around easier. It must be said, there’s not a lot of point in getting the degree if there is no intention of getting the EASA licence. How a person sequence that is up to them. For many people, it’s easier to get the education done and then move towards getting the experience necessary for the licence. It is quite hard to come back and do a degree after having worked for a few years.

What would you say to prospective

students and their parents about joining this field?

The aircraft maintenance industry is highly regulated. The number of people required can be predicted quite easily and there is solid evidence to show that the demand is going to keep growing.

This is also a highly rewarding field to be in. a person is essentially going to be responsible for aircraft worth hundreds of millions of dollars and whether or not it leaves the ground. Most importantly, it is about the safety of the persons who will be on the flight. It can be a very lucrative career. Having a degree will certainly help a person better perform the job and ensure upwards mobility.

Nilai University Aircraft Maintenance Engineering student shares his OJT experience at Air Asia X

Nilai Johnathan Robert CoxHaving hands on training with a well respected industry partner is like obtaining a visa to a high flying career on a graduate’s employability passport. Hence, a six-month On-The-Job-Training (OJT) with industry partners is built into the syllabus of the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at Nilai University (Nilai U). This is in addition to the practical experience that students attain working on two aircraft at Nilai U’s purpose built hangar. However, it is the OJT which is the crucial bridge between theoretical lessons and the real working world.

“Although this is OJT, we are treated as part of the real ground crew who operating on live aircraft. This means we only have an hour to complete our tasks between the airplane landings and taking off. Within this critical interval we have to complete the assigned tasks, such as refueling, tyre changes and charges, and accumulator charge, among many other checkups,” reveals Jonathan Robert Cox. He is one of the many Nilai U Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering students undergoing OJT at AirAsia X Sdn Bhd (AirAsia X) in the Low Cost Carrier Terminal, Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Since its establishment in 2007, AirAsia X has grown into Asia’s largest low-cost

carrier and is one of Nilai U’s industry partners. “Due to the rapid pace of our company, we expect students to be fast learners and voluntarily involved with the work. Logically, it is only reasonable that they learn to take some responsibilities on their shoulders,” explained Kusnizam Khusairi, Quality Assurance Inspector of AirAsia X. He is part of them responsible team for the intake of trainees from Nilai U and other institutions. “We believe that every student deserves a hands-on OJT. Our approach is to include the students as part of the real team. This way they will have to adapt to the brisk working environment where precision is priority. We can’t afford any mistake because we are dealing with people’s lives.”

“The experience of working on live aircraft is priceless on a graduate’s résumé,” states Nilai Uni Air AsiaEnawar Alias, a duty engineer in AirAsia X. “We have hired many Nilai U students in the past few years, some even before their graduation. They are those who receive good reviews from their duty technician and engineer. A successful aircraft engineer is made up of these – solid knowledge foundation, curiosity, and meticulousness,” said the AirAsia X senior staff who is part of the interviewer panel for the airline company’s new employment.

Jonathan says the hands-on experience is invaluable and is what makes an individual in

this field technically savvy. “Some trainees get less opportunity to deal with the real-life challenges on-site in this industry, but here at AirAsia X, we essentially live the aircraft maintenance crew life,” he states matter-of-fact. “The whole team is divided into four shifts with around 20 crews in each. There will be shift rotation for each will cover 12 hours of work.”

It is the ultimate dream for many of the young men and women in this field to become fully licensed aircraft maintenance engineers. Only a fully licensed engineer can certify a multi-million Ringgit aircraft airworthy. Crucially, Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering prepares students for the all-important European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) B1-1 examinations.

“My strategy after this is to get my license as soon as possible,” states Jonathan. He 558679_448297231916222_268986398_nwas referring to the passing of the EASA exams and getting the five years’ work experience necessary for him to get his EASA license. However, the 21-year-old Sarawakian has not dismissed the idea of furthering his studies. “I am also considering to further my studies to Nilai U’s Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering since successful graduates will also receive a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, United Kingdom,” says Jonathan. But for the moment he is busy absorbing the valuable lessons of his OJT alongside many of his Nilai U peers. “This is a dream come true for me as I have always been fascinated by planes since an early age. Getting to work in a field which I have a deep passion for is absolutely fantastic,” he exhorts.

Kingston University, UK has recognised that the syllabi of Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft45296_449792051766740_447374928_n Maintenance Engineering and Advanced Diploma in Aircraft Engineering programmes is similar to its degree programme. Once candidates successfully complete both Nilai U programmes and the relevant bridging modules, they will be awarded an internationally-recognised BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, UK. They will also have the option of pursuing a Masters in Aircraft Engineering at Kingston University.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering: Increasing demand for well trained professionals with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 66 B1-1 professional qualification

It is estimated that the world’s airlines will require 24,000 new aircraft, which must be greener, cleaner and smarter than ever before. As such, the demand for a skilled work force to keep these aircraft airworthy will be there.China has expressed a need for 210,000 aircraft maintenance workers in the next five years. That is an astounding number of jobs. Singapore may be a small country but Singapore International Airlines has 90 aircraft in their fleet. India is also seeing an exponential increase in air travel. Aircraft orders from India for Boeing and Airbus planes are absolutely breathtaking. The Middle East is another region that has shown tremendous growth.

In most parts of the industry, the salaries for Aircraft Maintenance Engineers would be of a very high order. Good quality engineers with the right certification at the moment are difficult to find. Thus the remuneration is very high for these engineers.

Steven-Sim-Wei-Onn

An interview with Steven Sim Wei Onn from Kuala Lumpur who is
studying the Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering at Nilai University.

What are your views on Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?

The airline industry is growing and thus needs more certified staff to maintain the aircrafts. Hence, the opportunity for aircraft engineers is huge. In addition to that aircraft engineering graduates can also opt to further their careers in aviation by applying for aviation institutes and becoming a pilot. A lot of people find Aircraft field scary as they believe flights tend to crash, but I would like to say that cars crash a lot more than flights, and our safety and backup far higher than any other transport mode. That is why Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a very interesting field to be in.

What do you plan to do after you finish your Diploma?

After finishing my Diploma, I am keeping a few options open. I originally wanted to become a pilot but I though a bit engineering knowledge would help me in the aviation industry, so I might try and fulfill that dream by applying to an aviation institute or I may apply for a Degree in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.  I am also open to working first and then continuing my studies, depending on whichever, opportunity comes first. Lastly, I am also thinking of applying for Cadet Engineer, which is and airline sponsorship to further my studies.

Why did you pick Aircraft as your favored course?

I have always been interested in aviation and as I have mentioned before I aspire to be a pilot, but my father urged me to get a diploma in aircraft maintenance engineering first, since it would give me an edge over other pilots, without an engineering background.  Also, this course is not something an individual should take simply because their parents want them to, this field requires passion and curiosity, both of which I have.

Why did you choose Nilai U’s diploma?

A career that in high in demand and pays well

A career that in high in demand and pays well

My father found out about the Nilai U’s Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering and there are very few Universities in Malaysia offering this course. After doing a research on other Universities I found out that Nilai U’s offerings in this course are by far the best and are in highest demand.

In your opinion, what are the job opportunities for an Aircraft Maintenance Engineering graduate like you?

The job opportunities in this field are pretty good, the demand for qualified engineers is on a steady increase as the airline companies are expanding. Furthermore, this is an internationally marketed area, and hence, it is quite easy for graduates to migrate overseas.

What are some of the interesting things you have learned so far in your course?

Air Legislation is a really interesting subject that comprises of aviation law and the

likes; it really broadened my perspective on the aviation industry. Systems are another interesting area of study, my favorites being turbine system, hydraulics, lubrication system and aero dynamics.

My Nilai U Experience:  ‘Nilai U is one of the best experiences of my life in terms of curriculum and social life. Here I am surrounded with great people, awesome mentors and good education.’

built a dedicated on-campus hangar to house a King Beech twin turbine aircraft, and the latest, Beechjet400A – one of the most popular jet aircrafts in the private charter sector and is also one of the fastest in its class.

School leavers interested in carving a career in this industry can sign up for Nilai UC’s very popular Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering which incorporates the EASA Part 66 B1-1 syllabus.

but Nilai UC is among a very select few that has the approval to conduct the IR Part 66 Exams. It is the first tertiary education provider in this region to obtain such approval.

With the approval, Nilai UC can now officially conduct the exams to meet the requirements of the IR Part 66 Aircraft Maintenance License in all categories. This includes conversion of existing national licences (e.g. from BCAR section L) or extension of basic licence category (e.g. from A1 to B1). This EASA qualification is now the preferred aircraft maintenance qualification in most parts of the world. In short, a person with an EASA licence will be allowed to certify the airworthiness of a commercial aircraft.

This examination site approval is under AST Limited, Scotland, a fully approved EASA IR Part 147 Type Training Organisation (Ref: UK. 147.0072). For each successful module, candidates will be awarded a Certificate of Recognition of Approved Examinations, issued by AST. Together with the required maintenance experience, these certificates can be submitted to any EASA competent authority for the Aircraft Maintenance Licence application.

With all the Part 66 modules, graduates only need to meet the work experience

requirement before they can apply for the engineering licence to be issued. In the longer term, if they opt to do the Bsc degree, graduates can look towards moving into supervisory and managerial positions.

The Advanced Diploma option was launched in response to great demand from students wanting to further their studies. The graduates of this Advanced Diploma will receive both an advanced diploma from Nilai U and a BSc (Hons) in Aircraft Engineering from Kingston University, UK. If students successfully complete the programme with a second class honours, they can progress on to post-graduate studies in the UK.

EASA Part 66 Category B1-1 qualification

EASA is the legal body within Europe that legislates against all aviation matters such

as air traffic control, aircraft maintenance, pilots and so on. EASA has brought what is possibly the newest and best licencing system into being. It is aimed at today’s modern aircraft and it doesn’t matter whether they are large airliners, small corporate jets or even some general aviation.

It is a certification qualification that is up-to-date. The EASA Part 66 along with the Part 1 for Maintenance is rapidly becoming the world standard for licencing. Thus many countries that align itself with the UK’s British Civil Aviation Regulations (BCAR) system are now converting to the EASA system. It has wide appeal in countries such as China and virtually throughout the entire Asia Pacific region,

certainly a lot of the Middle East countries and Europe.

Not only does it add quality and an appropriate standard to the training here, it gives students the opportunity to work outside Malaysia. It is a worldwide industry and this is a worldwide qualification.

The pathway to become a professional accountant in Malaysia through the Accounting degree and then the ACCA

Business services make up one of the Economic Transformation Programme’s 12 National Key Economic Areas in Malaysia, and accountants-1024x821within that, the accountancy sector has been identified as a business opportunity.

The ETP roadmap, launched in October 2010, points out that the growth of the accountancy sector in Malaysia depends on how well the economy performs and demand for accounting professionals hinges upon the domestic reporting requirements and tax regulations.

As the global financial reporting standards are becoming similar and with deregulation, more opportunities open up for accountants to offer their services globally.  “To be able to capitalise on those opportunities, Malaysia must increase the quality of its accountants and develop specialised skill sets in areas such as international taxation, forensic accounting and carbon accounting, in line with future growth areas,” says the ETP roadmap.

The ETP incorporates two relevant proposals. The first is to only allow those with recognised professional qualifications to be

admitted as chartered accountants in Malaysia. This is to improve the quality of Malaysia’s chartered accountants.

With this in place, the demand for qualified professional accountants will increase in Malaysia.

However, as we all know, the standard of English in Malaysia has dropped a lot. Some students thinking of going for accounting go into CAT and then the ACCA not realising that both are external papers and marked by the UK examiners. Therefore, although these students may be capable in their knowledge but their weakness in the English language to write properly during the exams will lead them to fail these papers.

"I met up with EduSpiral about 4 times in Ipoh & at Asia Pacific University to discuss about my future. He provided me with in-depth information and even arranged for me to meet up with the Head of School at APU to talk to me." Kar Jun, Accounting course

Kar Jun, Accounting course

Furthermore, the final 4 papers of the ACCA are not easy and if you attempt these papers while you are too young, can be challenging.

I would suggest that students go into an accounting degree programme first where the degree is exempted from the 9 papers of the ACCA. Upon graduation, you find a job and then take the final 4 papers of the ACCA to become a professional accountant.

In choosing the university or college for the degree, you should go for a university where the students speak English mostly. Research by Star newspaper has shown that graduates with good command of the English language tend to get a higher salary and get promoted easily.

A lot of students like the easy way out and choose colleges and universities that are cheap and with little facilities thinking that as long as they just get the qualification, they are alright. They forget that if the quality of the university is low, the student’s quality will also be low when they graduate.

You won’t have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the working world. Not being able to speak English well, you won’t be able to become a

All Accountants have to abide by a strict code of ethics and maintain high professional standards.

All practising accountants must register with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). The Accountant Act, 1967 recognises an Accountant as one who is a member of MIA. MIA members can either be registered as Registered Accountants, RA(M) or Public Accountants, PA(M).

The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) was established in 1967 under the Accountants Act 1967 (Act’) as the regulatory body of the profession in Malaysia. Thus, it also represents the voice of all accountants in the country.

In Malaysia, the word ‘accountant’ is protected under the provisions of the Act, which states that no one can hold himself or herself out or practice as an accountant unless he or she is registered as a member of MIA.
