Team Rhapsody, students from the Asia Pacific University College of Technology and Innovation (UCTI), emerged as the winners of the Imagine Cup 2012 Malaysia Finals. The team consisting of Tan Jit Ren, Wong Mun Choong, Chan Wai Lun and Ker Jia Chiun,, had built a solution known as the “WizBoard” which aims to solve the global issue of teacher attrition.
Microsoft Corporation organises an annual competition entitled The Imagine Cup, involving tertiary student teams representing nations all around the world.
Team Rhapsody from UCTI beat 30 groups at the finals held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The Microsoft- and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM)-organised annual competition has become known as the “Olympics” of student technology competitions and requires participants to use technology to help solve real world problems as defined by the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
They also won the supplementary Innovation Award, presented by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) for the solution with the most business viability.
In keeping with this year’s competition theme “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problem”, the application requires just one teacher to teach a class. The said lesson can be saved and made accessible to anyone in the world from any country, culture, or language.
Microsoft Malaysia managing director Ananth Lazarus said that students had a significant responsibility to ensure the continual progress and success of the country and that the competition was an investment into the nation’s future game-changers.
UCTI is no stranger to the competition having had its students win the prestigious competition in 2011 and 2010. For the 2011 championships held in Kuching, Sarawak, UCTI created history when 3 teams from UCTI made a clean sweep of the Top 3 spots.
– Team “Cyberknightz” Won the Overall Championship and were also chosen to receive the “MDeC Special Innovation Award”, for their project entitled “Health3”. They were awarded RM10,000 in Cash Prize, and will represented Malaysia In the World Championship of Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011 in New York, USA
– Team “Filius Educata” won the 1st Runner Up prize in this competition and walked away with RM 5000 in cash, for their project entitled “Utopyeah!”
– Team “Asia Science” won the 2nd Runner Up prize and won RM2,000 in cash, and were also presented with the “Presentation Superstars Award” for their project entitled “Power Transmission Atomation”.
In the 2010 competition, UCTI’s Team HDC won the First prize and represented Malaysia in the International Imagine Cup held in Warsaw, Poland and made it to the 6th placing out of 400 teams.
