UCSI University students win the Dulux Emerging Talent Awards 2012 which is a contest for Interior Design Colleges & Universities
Simon Chong Sin Man from UCSI University, was 1 out of 3 students who

emerged as winners of the Dulux Emerging Talent Awards (DETA) 2012. These talented students won the grand prize of an overseas study trip to London and Amsterdam.
Simon Chong of UCSI University beat over 400 other students from a total of 17 colleges and universities nationwide for a week of an exciting trip to the country that headquartered AkzoNobel, the world’s largest paints and coatings company.
Specially brought to the Interior Design students by AkzoNobel, DETA 2012 aims to unearth and nurture emerging talent while also grooming these young designers to become sustainability-conscious leaders of the future.
“At AkzoNobel, we underline our commitment to the sustainability by supporting the emergence of young Malaysian talent. This design competition is not only a chance for students to showcase their design skills, but also to demonstrate the possibilities of a sustainable future with regard to interior design,” said CW Goh, Managing Director of ICI Paints Malaysia Sdn Bhd. ICI Paints was acquired by AkzoNobel in 2008.
The competition mechanics of DETA 2012 were such that the three topics namely, Appreciating the Past dedicated to the commercial design of a display space, Embracing the Present for a dining space and Answering the Future, dedicated to an office space, were only revealed to participants on the day of competition. The students were required to express their ideas in the most creative manner possible as the purpose of this structure was to bring out an instantaneous burst of creative ideas by the participants within the 2 hours provided for designing.
The shortlisted participants were then given an opportunity to present their design to the judges. The judging criteria was based on different elements of the design, namely idea, creativity and uniqueness of the concept, the rationale and sustainability of the design, clear and effective presentation skills, and the optimum use of materials provided. As such, the winning participants had to prove themselves as well rounded designers of the future.

“We are delighted that through this platform we are able to reveal spontaneous talent, deserving of the rare international learning opportunity in London and Amsterdam. We believe this opportunity will expose our young Malaysian talents to the works of world-class professionals and will help them gain enriching insights into the architecture and design industry,” added Goh.
DETA 2012 marks AkzoNobel’s third consecutive nationwide student design competition in which previous years’ winners were given the opportunity to participate in design workshops in Beijing and Taipei. Only this year, the contest goes a step further and is taking the winners outside Asia, a first of its kind reward for raw design talent in Malaysia.
“Listening to the judges announce my name as one of this year’s winner made me freeze. I am beyond thrilled to know that I have won a golden opportunity to learn and experience a study trip of this scale. This will indeed contribute to my education and personal growth and eventually develop us into innovative, outstanding professionals,” said Melissa, one of the winners of the competition.
When interviewed on the perspective of opportunities that industry interactions like DETA can provide, all three winners agreed that creative interior design exercise such as this not only provides an avenue to identify and showcase raw and budding talent but also helps prepare them for the industry.
