One might ask, “What is Pharmacy about?”.

Pharmacy is about using medications safely and effectively. A Pharmacist is a professional who manages this process.

Pharmacists are experts in drugs and medications and their service is extremely important to both patients and the health care community. In addition to dispensing prescriptions, they must understand the chemistry, drug reactions, patient’s history, the effects and side effects of drugs.

Pharmacy is the profession with a major involvement in the development, testing, manufacture and distribution of medicines and the monitoring of drug therapy. In professional practice pharmacists are involved in hospitals in monitoring patient therapy, dispensing medicines, sterile and non

sterile manufacture of medicines, drug distribution, drug and poisons information and patient education. In the community, pharmacists should be responsible not only in dispensing drugs but also in providing information on a healthy lifestyle to the public.

They are important in educating the public on preventive measures and healthy living. When dispensing prescriptions the pharmacist must make sure that the drugs are suitable for the customers and advise them on how to use them properly.

This also provides an opportunity to exercise business management skills in a professional setting. Others find work in a hospital pharmacy which provides opportunities to emphasise patient treatments.

Graduates interested in industrial or academic careers frequently undertake further studies prior to embarking on these careers.

An honours degree in pharmacy or a postgraduate diploma would normally be the starting point of postgraduate study.
