inception in 1986. It is today an elitist law school that “nurtures and empowers law students to realise their fullest potential”, says the university’s Faculty of Law and Government dean Vasantha Moorthy.

The HELP law experience is “holistic in grooming employable lawyers for the real world of legal practice”, she says.

“Law students at HELP undergo an excellent legal education and this is evident by the 35 first class honours graduates HELP has produced to date. In 2012, the faculty produced seven first class honours achievers, and in 2013, another six from top UK universities, all of whom read law on a 2+1 UK Law Degree Transfer arrangement.”

HELP currently offers two pathways to a law degree, namely the UK Law Degree Transfer Programme and the HELP Bachelor of Laws Honours Degree which are undergraduate law programmes that have received full accreditation by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

The UK Law Degree Transfer Programme is affiliated with nine well-known and prestigious universities in the UK: the University Manchester, University of Sheffield, University of Leeds, Cardiff University, University of Liverpool, Aberystwyth University, University of Northumbria, University of West of England, Bristol, and University of Hertfordshire.

All partner universities are on the Malaysian Legal Profession Qualifying Board’s (MLPQB) recognised list of universities, says

In 2011, the law faculty was commended by the assessors of the Joint Academic Stage Board (JASB) for the best practices adopted at the faculty level in the administration and teaching of the UK law degree transfer programme. The board is a joint committee of the Bar Standards Board and the Solicitors Regulation Authority in the UK.

“The law experience at HELP is innovative and inspiring. The programmes are carefully designed in a highly supportive learning environment led by dedicated and experienced lecturers. The law team comprises practitioners and lecturers who were former practitioners who have turned to full-time academia. They bring with them a wealth of practical experience that is invaluable in the teaching of law,” Vasantha says.

Living to its mission of grooming employable lawyers, the faculty has forged strong links through collaborations with top law firms in the country that have endorsed the achievements of law scholars at HELP with book prizes and internships.

The faculty, in partnership with Messrs Skrine, organises the HELP-Skrine Annual Moot Competition where the winning team and best mooter are awarded internships by Messrs Skrine.

The faculty also conducts professional development courses and guest lectures which are facilitated by eminent legal practitioners, professors, retired and foreign judges on topical areas of law, Vasantha says.

Students also have the opportunity to attend workshops in resume writing and

accounting for lawyers, and attend seminars in business, economics, communications and psychology to enhance their soft skills—an invaluable asset in their future careers.

“The workshops, seminars and guest lectures are eye-openers to our students as they are exposed to the real world of legal practice from an early stage of their academic studies,” Vasantha says.

over the years to produce thinking law students. It emphasises on independent research, case studies, discussion and critical appreciation of legal concepts and theories, peer teaching, problem-based learning and debates, Vasantha says.

HELP is also the only private university in Malaysia which publishes two law journals, the HELP Law Review and the HELP Student Law Journal. The journals act as an incubator of knowledge to ignite legal thinking and research among faculty academics, students and members of the legal fraternity.

Students are also provided English classes for the IELTS examinations to hone their skills in the language.

The faculty also offers the Certificate in Legal Practice. The attractive feature of it is that student learning takes place in small cohorts to ensure a personal and supportive learning exprience led by a team of eminent legal practitioners, Vasantha says.
