The role of additive manufacturing or 3D printing in teaching and educational programmes has taken the learning process to a new level.

Recognising that, KBU International College is offering its best to the holistic learning experience of students by providing students, the opportunity to use the 3D printer, to generate three-dimensional models for their studies or assignments.

School of Design Head Siow Yin Yoong said: “The ability to convert designs into products using the 3D printer is rapidly changing the world.

And, we are proud that KBU is one of the first private educational institutions to introduce such sophisticated technology to the students”.

Explaining further on this, she said: “The 3D printer allows students to come up with three-dimensional models that need no machining or tooling.

It allows the models to be built layer by layer until desired shape is achieved;

which is more convenient and safer compared to the traditional way”.

She said that the printer allows computer 3D models to be sliced into layers and the software directs the pattern as it builds the part from the bottom up.

“The products can be designed in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software or 3D scanners that are used to create designs from existing objects,” added Siow.

The 3D printer is primarily used in teaching students who are undertaking programmes such as BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design (3+0) and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design (3+0), BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Diploma in Interactive Design which are being offered in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University, UK.

“Students can benefit from the 3D printer while working on projects such as

prototyping a product shape, packaging, character design models or for stationery and premium printouts,” she said.

The School which often incorporates competition briefs into the syllabus and teaching is also a strong advocate of producing industry-ready graduates through collaborations with industry players.

“The School has worked together with professional bodies such as the wREGA Malaysia and Tulis Fikir Sdn Bhd to keep abreast with the constant changes and demands of the industry.

It allows us to tune the teaching to be up to par with the industry,” Siow added.

KBU’s School of Design is also well-known for its track record of producing award winners.

Throughout the years, students have made the College proud by bagging international and local accolades such as the Nippon Paint Young Designer award, Samsung Galaxy Wonderland Competition and Philips Lighting Competition.

KBU’s School of Design also offers BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (3+0), BA (Hons) Graphic Design, Foundation in Art & Design, Diploma in Interior Design, Diploma in Interactive Design and Diploma in Advertising Design.
