KBU International College’s School of Design students proved yet again that they are shaped by professionals by winning

Bristol Student Design Competition 2013 recently.

The Bristol Student Design Competition was organised by the leading and highly regarded furniture manufacturers in providing office furniture and seating- in collaboration with Majlis Rekabentuk Malaysia (MRM).

Gan Su Yi, 24 and Cheok Yi Chi, 21- made KBU International College proud by bagging first and third prize in the design competition.

The students were presented with RM5000 and RM3000 together with a certificate each for their ideas on the new Bristol showroom which will exhibit the company’s broad range of office furniture in a manner that best accentuate Bristol’s history, heritage, design and quality, and the brand as a whole.

The winning students were also extended with internship opportunities with the renowned furniture manufacturer.

“The first prize for my ideas on how to design the showroom came as a surprise to me. It’s recognition for all my hard work and hours that I have invested into the project,” said Gan who blended the latest trends in designing office space

with Bristol’s touch into the ideas.

Gan also talked highly on the lecturers and personnel from Bristol who have inspired and encouraged her throughout the competition.

“I feel the approach of incorporating competition briefs into the learning modules is a very good idea and is one of the commendable efforts by KBU’s School of Design. It enhances students’ knowledge on the demands of the corporate world and design industry,” said Gan who is planning pursue an interior design job of her dream after completion of her studies.

Cheok concurred with Gan and said: “When it comes to design practice, aesthetic value alone will not win the trophy. I have learnt that we need to inject sellable elements into it”

The student used the element of light and sculpture to design the space of Bristol showroom.

School of Design Head Siow Yin Yoong said: “We are indeed very proud of our students who have won the competition.

This serves as a testimony that KBU’s students are highly employable upon graduation and are very talented”.

She added that the School collaborates with industry players to unleash the creative abilities of students and train them according to the expectation of the real world.

KBU’s School of Design cultivates top and award-winning designers through its industry-based teaching and learning.

These include collaborative projects such as BROS bottles design, new product design for Stainless Steel Industries and Ralph Lauren’s The Big Pony Collection. Besides that, the school is equipped with everything a design student needs. The facilities include spacious studio space, advanced computer hardware and software, wood workshop, printing studio, 3D workshops and a range of other equipment.

In recent years, KBU’s design students received numerous awards including Philips Lightover Challenge, Hyundai Rev-Up InterCollege Competition, Malaysian Society of Interior Design Awards, Asia Pacific Designers Awards and International Design Awards. It is worth mentioning that, in 2012, the School swept clean all the awards under

the Nippon Paint Young Designer Competition for the Interior Architecture category.
KBU’s School of Design also offers BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (3+0), BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Furniture & Product Design, Foundation in Art & Design, Diploma in Interior Design and Diploma in Interactive Design.
