The furniture design competition was organised in conjunction with the Malaysian International Furniture Fair 2014 (MIFF)
Being inspired by the unfolding of the pyramid-shaped festive Chinese rice dumpling that is wrapped with bamboo leaves, Lee who is currently undergoing second year of the furniture and product design programme created “Gather” – a living room sofa that breathes a strong local flavor.

Explaining the logic behind the name of “Gather”, Lee said: “It refers to the coming together of a fabric sofa with a rattan flap for a variety of seating needs, and also, the combination of two materials- rattan and fabric”.
She said the sofa is suitable for all users.
Referring to the experience of participating in MIFF Furniture Design Competition as ‘mind blowing’, Lee added that it was a good exposure for her as she learned on how to deal with clients and had a taste of real working environment.

The 22-year old also commended KBU School of Design’s effort to incorporate competition briefs in its syllabus.
“So far, the effort has produced many award winners among my seniors in the design programme. Not only that, the step by step instructions given by our lecturers and their ideas to make the design better was definitely fruitful,” said the elated student.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my lecturer, Ms Nicole Fu Chew Xiang who has been by my side, inspiring and guiding me, throughout the process,” said Lee, who would like venture into the furniture design industry upon graduation.
The living room sofa created by Lee has received good reviews as the judges sang praises of her design.
The sofa was described as a “comfortable free-form seating because of the beanbag and a fixed seat created by the wrap-over”.
“We are proud that one of our student received second prize in a competition which was open not only for students but also for young designers and professionals. This shows that our students’ designs are on par with the professionals,” said

School of Design Head Siow Yin Yoong.
The competition received a total of 244 entries in which 10 were shortlisted and three were awarded accordingly.
Lee’s ‘Gather’ sofa was displayed at the MATRADE Exhibition Centre (MECC) during MIFF 2014 from 4 March to 8 March 2014, together with the works of other finalists.
