UKM is in World’s Top 50 Universities Under the Age of 50 but Drops 1 Spot
Malaysia’s second-oldest university, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is in the list of the world’s top 50 universities under

the age of 50 this year, but slipped a rung to the 20th spot. The latest ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) showed UKM was the only Malaysian higher-education institution to make the list.
The university, however, fell one step from it’s 19th seating in the previous survey by the research outfit, which ranks universities around the globe.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which was in second place in the previous survey, came out top this time beating Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST).
Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) emerged third, while Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) and City University of Hong Kong took the fourth and fifth spots respectively.
The “Top 50 under 50” survey is compiled based on results from the QS World University Rankings 2014/15, which list the world’s top 800 universities.
“The dynamic nature of this ranking makes it an interesting comparison with our global and regional rankings.

“By focusing on the performance of these younger institutions alone, the list aims to spot the up-and-coming higher education powerhouses in the global arena,” QS head of research Ben Sowter said in a press statement. In the Top 400 QS World University Rankings released earlier, both UKM and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) were in the top 300, taking the 259th and 294th spots.
They ranked 269th and 355th respectively in the 2013 list of the top institutions of higher learning across the world.
The country’s premier university, Universiti Malaya (UM), also improved on its performance, which saw it break into the Top 200 category previously, this time climbing 16 places to rank 151st this year.
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) climbed 46 places but missed the Top 300 category by a narrow margin, landing at 309th. It was joined in the tier by Universiti Putra Malaysia, which went to 376th from the 411-420 tier last year.
The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) did not improve its position and remained in the 501-550 group, while Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm) went from the 701+ level to the 651-700 category.
Considered one of the leading benchmarks of universities worldwide, the QS Rankings grades a total of 863 tertiary institutions out of the over 3,000 that it assesses.
The QS World University Rankings, which is now in its tenth year, measures these universities based on academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty student ratio, citations per faculty, international students and international faculty.
