bagging numerous accolades this year. Its latest achievement would be when a group of students from KBU International College emerged as the winner of the Inaugural RSA Genovasi Malaysian Awards, under the Social Entrepreneurship category recently.

RSA Genovasi Malaysia Awards is a student design competition open to university students, organised hand in hand with Genovasi, Malaysia’s only Design Thinking School and the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce (RSA).

RSA is a UK-based think tank and a registered charity body that works to improve society at large.

The competition aims to empower university students across the world to develop solutions to pressing social, environmental and economic issues using the principles of design thinking.

The winning team for the Student Entrepreneurship brief comprised students Mandy Choong Mun Yee, Lee Man Kit, Kim Eunkyung, Goh Pei Hua and Yong Lee Chee. Their project, “Weekend Heroes”, is a non-profit organisation which encourages the public to take part in social enterprises and activities during weekends.

“The victory came as a surprise to us (me and my group members). I feel very honoured to have clinched the award,” said

Speaking about the winning project, she said: “The project is specifically designed to promote social entrepreneurship where it will encourage people to help the needy and poor during their leisure times.”

She added that the group had to design the whole system including the web design of the “Weekend Heroes”.

Adding further, she said: “KBU is well-known for incorporating live briefs into our modules. That is definitely a great idea as it moulds us to be industry ready. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my lecturers who have been by our side, inspiring and guiding us, throughout the process.

She said the project has also cultivated the spirit of team work among them.

“I would like to thank my team mates: Lee, Kim, Goh and Yong who have been cooperative throughout the project,” she said.

Daniel Chua Yong Ho from the Furniture and Product Design programme had also made the college by winning the Digital Age brief.

“My entry, ‘mySearch Apps’ addresses the communication gaps between the Government and the public. The app is designed to be a search engine as well as a communication tool between the people and the government,” said Daniel Chua.

He also added that winning this award is one of the best gifts that he has received thus far.

School of Design Head Siow Yin Yoong, who was elated by the big win, said: “We are indeed very happy with our students’ achievements. On top of that, I am also very proud that our students have won two out of three categories in the RSA Genovasi Award”

“At KBU’s School of Design, we work towards producing award winners, rather than just mere students,” she added.

KBU’s School of Design cultivates top and award-winning designers through its industry-based teaching and learning. These include collaborative projects such as BROS bottles design, new product design for Stainless Steel Industries and Ralph Lauren’s The Big Pony Collection.

Besides that, the school is equipped with everything a design student needs. The facilities include spacious studio space, advanced computer hardware and software, printing studio, 3D workshops and a range of other state-of-the-art equipments.

In this year alone, KBU’s design students received MIFF Furniture Design Competition, MIJF Jewellery Design Awards and the Spirit of Merdeka Sculpture Competition, among others.

KBU’s School of Design offers BA (Hons) Interior Architecture & Design (3+0), BA (Hons) Graphic Design, BA (Hons) Furniture & Product Design, Foundation in Arts & Design, Diploma in Interior Design and Diploma in Interactive Design.
