billboards, posters and pamphlets that a graphic designer needs to handle at the job. There is more to being a graphic designer, as you will be entitled to do web design, mobile app design, digital signages, videos or even interior designs.

Recognising these key trends in the world of graphic design, KBU International College is determined to groom designers who can just handle whatever that comes their way.

This is evident with one of the KBU’s students, being able to switch from working as a designer at an international advertising agency to being commissioned to do wall graphics and installation projects.

Yong Vin Sze, 23 is optimistic that the current switch in her profession to be a freelance designer would serve be fruitful as the client that she worked for the first time, Kuo Lit Meng, from Kazoku-Ai Modern Teppanyaki Kitchen, is beyond impressed with her work.

“The phrase Kazoku Ai literally means family love. In accordance with the meaning, the client wanted a wall graphic which will reflect the meaning in his restaurant.

As such, I have designed an installation which consists of 52 gold fishes swimming towards a chrysanthemum flower. As how

The owner of the newly-launched restaurant, Lim said: “I am very impressed with the installation done by Yong at our outlet”.

He also added that Kazoku-Ai will be expanding to at least to 10-12 outlets soon and each outlet will have a mural to depict the meaning behind Kazoku-Ai.

Asked on the challenges she has faced during the production of the installation, Yong said: “I took a total of 4 weeks to finish the wall graphics. As this is the first time, I had to do a lot of research and carefully pick the materials to ensure the best result”.

She said she has used elements of black and red to fit the restaurant’s theme and ambience.

She added the design techniques that she has learned at KBU’s BA (Hons) Graphic Design have served to be very beneficial.

“This shows that students are very versatile in terms of transforming their skills according to the market’s needs and wants,” said
