Competition.

Working with six other team mates from New Zealand, Nepal, Australia and Argentina, two of our final year Bachelor of Business (Marketing) students, Wong Kuan Zhou andTan Keng Ee, jointly won the ANZ Champion Team Award. This award carries a cash prize of NZ$1000 for each team member. The team’s winning business proposal is entitled “Nepal’s Sanitary Napkin Revolution – Developing Low Cost Sanitary Pads for Girls in Rural Nepal”.

The GEE Competition is an annual event organized by Global Enterprise in partnership with the ANZ GroupVictoria University, Wellington, NZ (the main host), UNESCO NZ,University of Otago Business School, NZ, and Te Kaihau Education Trust, NZ.

The Global Enterprise Experience is an international business competition that develops skills in managing across cultures, time zones, world views and levels of wealth and poverty.  It builds a mindset for creating successful business ventures that tackle social and environmental issues.

It is basically an online competition, requiring the contestants to produce a business concept proposal that addresses one of the 8 millennium goals of the United Nations. Each participating group comprises 8 students from different countries. No more than two students from the same country are allowed to be part of a group. The participants of each group worked on their business proposal via Skype and FB, where each meeting session would last from half to an hour.

The 2014 contest ran from March 26 to April 16 with 960 participants from 208 universities in 62 countries placed in 114 multinational teams of eight members.  Teams used distance communication technologies to build their team, come up with creative ideas on profitable businesses to address the needs of youth and/or children, and write a business concept proposal.  The prize giving ceremony was held in New Zealand’s Parliament on May 20 2014.

This is the third successive year in which our Business students have participated in the GEE Competition. In each of the past two consecutive years, 2012 and 2013, four of our students won the ANZ Highly Commended Team Awards via their participations in two different team projects. This year, the two aforementioned students belong to the group which won the coveted ANZ Champion Team Award.

One of the aspirations of the organizers is to encourage participating institutions to incorporate this competition as part of their curriculum assessment. To this end, Mr Ravi Varmman has successfully embedded this competition as an assessment component for the subject MKT 304, Competitive Marketing Planning and Strategy over the last 3 years.

According to Mr Ravi, this is an innovative method of learning. Beyond creative problem solving and decision making, the competition also assesses student’s knowledge on world issues in addition to inculcating communication skills, leadership qualities and ability to work effectively as a team in a global scenario.
