Engineering (Mechanical) at University of Malaya (UM) in 1977. While serving as a tutor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, UM from 1978 to 1981, he conducted postgraduate research on Solar Energy for the award of Master of Engineering Science degree in 1981.

From 1981 to1982, he worked in a consulting engineering firm and rejoined UM as a lecturer in 1982. He obtained a staff scholarship in 1986 to pursue his PhD study in Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA, where he was enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Department and took a number of courses offered by the Center for Firesafety Studies. He completed his PhD dissertation on fire-induced flow and rejoined UM as an academician in 1989.

Dr Than has many years of experience in the academia. He was with UM from 1982 to 2006, Monash University (Sunway) from 2006 to 2008 and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) from 2008 to 2013. He has provided technical expertise and consultancy service to private and semi-government firms during the above periods.

On administration, he has served as Deputy Dean, academic development and undergraduate programmes for more than four years at UTAR before joining HELP CAT. He has published and presented articles on solar energy, fluid flow, heat transfer and fire safety in local and international journals and conferences.
