Course Description of the Bachelor of Engineering (Computer System Engineering) at Curtin University Sarawak
Curtin has a common first year for all its engineering students which builds their range of basic science skills and knowledge, with particular emphasis on physics, chemistry and mathematics.
Students then undertake a year of study in common with those in Electrical and Electronic and Communication Engineering. They have the flexibility to change between these courses until the beginning of third year.
The course requires four years of full-time study. Before graduating, students are required to obtain 12 weeks engineering work experience and a senior first aid certificate.
Honours are awarded to graduates based upon their performance during the four years of the course.

Engineering First Year (EFY) program at Curtin University Sarawak
The Engineering First Year (EFY) program prepares students to enter their second year in their chosen engineering discipline.
EFY students learn mechanics, materials and electrical systems which provides a good physical understanding in order to design engineering solutions for the physical world. Engineering solutions also require a mathematical and logical mind.
This aspect will be trained in the two engineering mathematics unit and one programming unit offered in the year.
Even the best engineering mind does not work in isolation. Now, more important than ever, engineers are expected to perform in teams and communicate with technical and non-technical people.
In semester one and semester two of EFY, we put students into multi-cultural groups to design, build and present engineering solutions.
These Problem Based Learning (PBL) approaches simulate the engineer’s working environment and better prepares student for their studies and the rigours of the working world.
One of the strengths of the EFY program is students have the chance to change their course before entering second year. From my own experience, many students enter the first year without a clear understanding of their chosen engineering discipline.
With the EFY program, students have one year to meet with senior students, academics and industry partners who can give a clearer and accurate sense of the many engineering discipline offered in Curtin Sarawak.
The student can then make the right choice in his or her career. Student engineers who complete the EFY have demonstrated competence in engineering knowledge, worked in teams and communicated engineering designs.
They are ready and able to continue their second year studies and in a few years transition from student engineer to graduate engineer.

Industrial Training for Engineering Students at Curtin University Sarawak
Industrial Training refers to students’ work experience in an engineering-practice environment to familiarize themselves
with professional engineering practices prior to graduation. The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Engineers Australia, which are the organizations that accredited all engineering programmes in Malaysia and Australia, strongly advocate that at least 12 weeks of continuous industrial training is included in all undergraduate engineering programmes.
In Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia, all engineering students MUST complete at least 12 weeks of Industrial Training as one of the requirements to be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering.
It is a mechanism to integrate engineering practices in the curriculum to achieve the overall Programme Outcomes and Curtin Graduates Attributes. Student shall undergo the Industrial Training during the semester break after he/ she has completed Year 3 or obtained at least 500 credit points.
Students should note that Industrial Training is an essential component in the engineering curriculum. It provides exposure to engineering processes at a practical level; helps developing professional skills required by an engineer and offers opportunity to prospective employment.
Many employers regard this period as a chance to assess potential employees for future employment.
All engineering students should make considerable effort and give sufficient thought into obtaining the most effective training for themselves. Whilst challenging, it is desirable to obtain training that covers a range of activities, such as design, laboratory and on-site field works.
At Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia, Industrial Training is facilitated by the Dean of School with the consultation of the Industrial and External Relations Committee, and is managed by the respective Advisor for each engineering programme.
