Teaching and Learning for the BSc (Hons) CGI and Digital Effects Degree Programme at APIIT
Different people learn in different ways and therefore the Programme utilises a range of different teaching methods and

situations
– lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops (skills-based), studio work, technology packages, project work, role-plays, virtual learning environments and web-pages etc. – that best deliver the specific learning outcomes of the modules.
Industrial visits and field trips will also be scheduled to provide a realistic exposure to live work environments. In addition, PDP is used at all levels of the awards through Pebblepad or other suitable means of recording. Pebblepad allows the students to keep a record of their development throughout their award.
Students are encouraged to participate with the professional world through study visits to film, TV, VFX (visual effects) houses, games, animation and film festivals which takes place every year.
Typically modules on the Creative Industries Technology award incorporate a variety of teaching and learning approaches into their delivery and as student’s progress from Level 4 to Level 6 there is a change in emphasis from tutor-directed teaching within lectures and workshops to student centred independent learning.
This is reflected in a change in emphasis in Level 6 from teaching and learning through the completion of

structured class activities, worksheets and assignments in Level 4 and Level 5 to the increasing involvement of students in project work where they can have considerable input into the choice of topics for investigation as well as both the design and implementation of appropriate field, lab, and literature based methods of enquiry (both individual and group based).
Directed study supports and builds upon the knowledge and skills learnt in class to provide a fuller understanding of the subject. Personal and module tutors are on hand to provide support to the students to discuss any queries, for advice on plans and initial drafts etc.
The curriculum is structured so that skills and knowledge developed lower levels can be transferred, re-applied and further developed between in the higher levels.
The regular meetings which are built into the system and student appraisals ensure that students are constantly reflecting upon, adapting and enhancing their learning.
Assessment for the 3+0 BSc (Hons) CGI and Digital Effects Degree Programme at APIIT
A range of assessment techniques are used including presentations, demonstrations, written reports, practical work, oral tests, online tests, log books, exams, class tests, portfolios, group work, peer assessments and online blogs and forums where students present their work.
The method of assessment for each module has been carefully considered by the teaching teams to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved balanced with maintaining academic rigour.
The majority of assessments are course work based. The award content is a mixture of theory and practice, using exams wouldn’t offer any educational benefits to the students.
A number of compulsory but non assessed formative multiple choice tests are conducted in many modules. The tests are made available on LMS for a week at a time and are designed to engage the students in active learning as early as possible in the semester.

Problem based learning tasks are generally assessed the following week by peers who develop the student’s practical, theoretical, critical and analytical skills. The work has to be presented online or in class with a description on the learning and development cycle. The problems presented are outcome based and how the students get to a solution is managed with the help of the academic as the facilitator.
All these methods ensure that learning outcomes are tested in the most appropriate way; reflect the sorts of materials graduates will be asked to prepare in future careers; and recognise that students have different abilities.
Although the practical and skills based nature of the CGI and Digital effects award and its delivery of Staffordshire University means that the emphasis is on coursework, formal examinations and class-tests are also used to assess knowledge-based modules across all three levels.
