in Malaysia and 1,834 community pharmacies throughout the country.. The Pharmacist to people ratio is set to turn from 1:2,947 this year to 1:2,000 by 2016.  

More community pharmacies will be set up in rural areas. The Health Ministry is looking into a zoning system to distribute pharmacies accordingly in urban and rural areas so that the public would not be deprived of such medical service.

Presently, the concentration of community pharmacies is in Selangor where there are 433 pharmacies. Penang has 213, Kuala Lumpur has 201 and Johor has 157 community pharmacies.

The Health Ministry and the Malaysian Pharmacy Association has also developed the Malaysian Healthcare Providers Mapping Service. Part of the plan is to improve the number of pharmacists to the population in Malaysia from 1:2,974 to 1:2,000 by 2016.

The starting salary for a Pharmacy graduate is pretty good as well. I talked to one recent graduate who was getting about RM4000 a month and another graduate’s parent told me the same information as well.

Malaysia’s generic pharmaceutical manufacturing industry is expected to see US$365 million (RM1.108 billion) in total annual revenue by end-2012 as indicated by the Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI).

In 2011, the industry recorded slightly over US$350 million (RM1.063 billion) in revenue and it is growing about six to eight percent annually.

Compulsory Training for Pharmacy in Malaysia Shortened to 1 year

Furthermore, Pharmacy graduates can now go through their training outside of government hospitals and facilities. This was announced recently by the Health Ministry to help increase the pharmacist-people ratio for the next three years.
Pharmacy graduates can undergo their Provisionally Registered Pharmacists (PRP) training at private pharmacy facilities, such as private hospitals, R&D industries and community pharmacies that are accredited by the Malaysian Pharmacy Board.
In September 2011, PRP was shortened from a three-year period to only one year.

Malaysia is rapidly advancing in various areas of pharmacy, including pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical pharmacy to name a few.

The early part of the B.Pham (Hons) curriculum focuses students on the fundamental knowledge in pharmacy as the foundation for later years. The curriculum is unique in that it starts off with integrated courses where four main disciplines are being taught for each body system studied.

Students appreciate this mode of learning as it enhances their understanding. This will serve as a strong foundation later as they practice as pharmacists.

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) programme is recognised by Malaysian Pharmacy Board (MPB).

Programme Details

The duration of the programme is 4 years.

Lectures and coursework are completed in 14 weeks, with 2 weeks study break before the final exams weeks. There are two semesters in an academic year with a long break from April to July

In each year there are two long-semesters consisting of 14 weeks of instruction with 2 weeks of examinations, and one short-semester consisting of 7 weeks of instruction with 1 week of examinations. The long-semesters start in January and May, while the short-semester starts in September.

In the months of November & December students undergo industrial training under the Co-Operative Placement Scheme to learn and to familiarize themselves with real life working environment.

In addition, students also undertake a research and development project in their final year.

The number of contact hours per subject per week depends on the credit and teaching methodology of each subject. Each credit is approximately equivalent to 1 hour of class, or 2 hours of labs per week.
