Taylor’s University Produces Employable Graduates

Occupations relying on people skills, to name the least, have increased significantly and seen shifts in employment patterns where graduates now need broad capabilities – in order to be flexible and more entrepreneurial than in the past. Higher education institutions have an edge in enabling students’ to develop deep knowledge, while cultivating the skills needed to secure their future employment. Therefore, it is integral to ensure that students have the right models of education to suit a range of interests and career aspirations.

Employer reputation and internship programmes are at the heart of Taylor’s University and its students to expose them to the industry of their course – providing an opportunity to explore their interest in real life and apply acquired knowledge.

Recently, Taylor’s University broke into the 2019 QS Graduate Employability Rankings as the fourth best university in the world and Asia’s best for the graduate employment rate indicator. Taylor’s University vice- chancellor and president, Prof Michael Driscoll, expressed his elation over this achievement, which is a great achievement for a young university.

“This latest achievement comes on the heels of our strong performance in the area of employer reputation in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, which saw us place at the 216th rank internationally, or within the top 1 per cent of tertiary institutions in the world favoured by employers; which is testament to the quality of graduates we produce.”

“Taylor’s is the only Malaysian private university to be listed in the top 10 universities in Malaysia in both the QS World University Rankings and the QS Asia University Rankings. We are also now the only private university to be recognised for its graduate employment rate,” said Prof Driscoll, adding that these achievements were built on the hard work and dedication of its entire staff.

At Taylor’s, students are required to fulfil their internship requirements, sometime in their course, which varies from three to six months at their chosen company. The top industry players include those in automotive, hospitality, IT, engineering and finance to name a few.

According to William Lim, Director of Learning and Development at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur: “We have been happily working with Taylor’s University for many years. Their students and graduates are fast learners, able to adapt to the working environment and possess a strong aptitude in team work.”

“Some of the qualities we see time and again in students are in their expansive knowledge, the capability to express themselves well and interact with our guests seamlessly, not discrediting their willingness to hone skills unique to the industry,” he said.

Prior to the initial entrance into the workforce, students are required to attend workshops touching on topics like interview skills, executive presence, ethics and etiquette at the workplace.

“The workshop proves to be useful for the students as they are well prepared when they report for work – minimising initial training challenges with them, as they know what to expect when they come on board,” said Lim.

For Sophia Ang, Head, Talent Attraction and Workplace Futurisation at Maybank Malaysia, she finds students at Taylor’s University are, “highly resourceful and agile. Constantly striving to deliver better and one thing I noticed, Taylor’s students are always hungry to learn outside their comfort zone.”

“Of course this is not surprising, as Taylor’s is no stranger in winning student competitions. This is evident through the Taylor’s students’ participation in this year’s Maybank Go Ahead Challenge, or MGAC. The number of students participating this year reached close to double of last year’s. In fact, students from Taylor’s University have proven themselves not only in Malaysia but also internationally with them emerging as top 10 finalists in last year’s MGAC,” she said.
