Taylor’s Business School final year Finance and Economics undergraduate student, Marissa Ooi, who together with her team mate, Matthew Ooi, a first year University of London law undergraduate, formed the Malaysian team “GoGood” made Malaysia proud by emerging as the International champions at the ASEAN Virtual Business Plan Competition 2018 in Sydney, Australia last July.

The contestants have to submit an excerpt of their business idea, which had to be completely new and not used for any other competition or project before. Marissa proposed a social enterprise business idea, which provides affordable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) consultancy for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who have interest to conduct CSR activities, but do not have an in-house CSR team.

national finals in May this year. The judges look for fresh and sound business concepts, solid problem validations, well thought out solution with unique distinguishing factors, proper management, financial and marketing plans, as well as risk mitigation strategies, as well as convincing and engaging business pitch and a well-handled question and answer session.

As winner of the competition at the national level, Marissa was invited to present her business plan at the final international level held in Sydney, Australia, in July this year.

Taylor’s University student, Marissa, is grateful for the experience and opportunity to participate in the competition, “This experience thought me that on-the-ground research is vital in understanding market needs and consumer preferences. Besides, having a mindset of continuous improvement and innovation is key in developing a robust business plan.”

“I plan to continue to develop GoGood as a social enterprise on top of gaining working experience in the field of consulting. In my free time, I hope to coach and share my experience with youths. Additionally, I intend to spend some time after graduation travelling to discover new perspectives and get inspiration for business improvement.” Added Marissa.

The ASEAN Virtual Business Plan Competition 2018 is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian-ASEAN Council (AAC) of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and involves institutions in three countries: Rangsit University in Thailand, Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia and the University of New England in Australia. Each of these three universities organised a national business plan competition and the winning teams from each country pitched their ideas to a panel of international judges in Sydney, Australia.
