The aim of tertiary education is to get a good job with high salary so that you can take care of your family and maintain the lifestyle that you want. It is the dream of most people to become rich, but while everyone is dreaming, only a few have the discipline and courage to act on those dreams to make them become a reality.

Therefore, putting in the effort now, through choosing the right course, will pay off in the long run and is the best approach to fast-tracking your wealth. Now, you may ask, how can choosing the right course make me rich?

Malaysian students are exposed to the internet and to the jobs from overseas countries such as the USA or UK. Many don’t realise that some of these courses are not in demand in Malaysia or may not command a high salary. A lot of students after SPM or O-Levels just blindly follow their friends to the university taking any course as long as they can be with their friends.

Some students choose the course based on the advise of their parents, relatives or friends. Some of their advise could be valuable but some are simply just not based on facts or evidence of good career prospects. Students must check the advise given by so called agents & counsellors, and their friends and relatives to make sure what they said is true and supported by facts and evidence.

Of course, just choosing the course doesn’t mean that you will get rich automatically. Choosing the right course is just the first step in the right direction of achieving a life with stable or high income. In addition, the university that you study that course at also plays an important part in helping you to gain the knowledge and skills to perform well in your career and earn a high income.

It can be difficult to choose the right Computer Science degree as the title may not mean much. Students must look at the subjects offered in the degree to ensure that they are choosing the right Computer Science degree in Malaysia that fits their career goals.

Furthermore, graduate employability has also become a concern  for Malaysia. Employers recognise the concerns  on graduate’s skills gap, such as the lack of  industrial training experience and communication skills. Hence, just choosing the right course doesn’t necessarily ensure a successful future.

In today’s rapidly changing digital landscape, some companies that understand their talent needs and are willing to pay top dollar for them may have a competitive edge.

The whole world is moving very fast in the area of technology and many jobs done by humans have been or will be replaced by robots and computers. Therefore, it makes sense to choose to study Information TechnologyComputer Science or Software Engineering as the future potential for these careers are very good and the salaries are high and keep on increasing each year.

Frost and Sullivan’s Digital Talent Report commissioned by Malaysia Digital Economy Corp (MDEC) in 2017, Malaysia’s digital talent demand is expected to grow by 15 per cent annually, that would require more than 540,000 jobs by 2020. Globaldata Marketing Opportunity Forecasts to 2023: ICT in Malaysia
Globaldata Marketing Opportunity Forecasts to 2023: ICT in Malaysia

ICT spending in Malaysia to reach US$25.2bn 2023, says GlobalData

The information and communication technology (ICT) market in Malaysia is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9% between 2019 and 2023.This growth from 2018 US$16.5bn to US$25.2bn in 2023, will mainly be supported by the rising adoption of ‘client computing’ and ‘cloud computing’, says GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

According to GlobalData Market Opportunity Forecasts, ‘mobility’, ‘cloud computing’, ‘data analytics’, ‘storage’ and ‘business process outsourcing’ will be the five leading IT solution areas in terms of growth rate. Mobility is set to witness the highest CAGR of 21% during the forecast period.

Manufacturing in Malaysia continues to be the most significant revenue contributing sector, with its revenue contribution to the overall ICT spending expected to marginally increase from 18.4% to 18.5% of the total ICT revenues in period (2018-2023).

The growth of ICT in Malaysia, especially in the manufacturing sector, has been further aided by government-enacted policies such as ‘Industry4WRD’, a national policy which aims to transform the manufacturing sector and related services within the period from 2018 to 2025. These policies are expected to lead to a mature digitalization of the Malaysian market.

More than 60% of Malaysia’s GDP will come from digital trade by 2022. “As the country moves towards digital transformation (DX), its ideals have paved the way for more IT spending. Data centre services, cloud computing, data analytics and mobile tech have become mainstream and Malaysia is finding itself in an exploratory world of technology,” says Sudev Bangah, managing director of International Data Corp Asean.

MDEC’s recent analysis among various job search sites (LinkedIn, Jobstreet, Monster, Indeed and Jobstore) show an increasing demand for digital jobs.

The results were that across all portals, there is an average of 3,895 IT-related jobs. Also, as mentioned just now, the total number of IT-related jobs advertised in all 5 portals, minding the possibility of duplications of course, amount to 20,000! And finally, do note that about 77% of IT jobs advertised on these portals are for experienced positions.

Hardly a surprise at this stage, the IT-skew tells you a lot about the general direction that industries are moving in – digitalisation.

Echoing this is LinkedIn’s 2020 Emerging Jobs Report Malaysia. The top 10 jobs all have a digital component; Data scientist, data engineer and data analyst emerge in the top 12 jobs, reflecting the government’s commitment to securing Malaysia as a leader in big data.

LinkedIn also reports that e-Commerce is fueling demand for hard and soft skilled talent in the internet economy! Online platforms need technical talent to build apps and online sales portals for instance. But also, they need those who can leverage such platforms and engage online customers – jobs like digital marketing specialists and community managers come to mind.

The information technology (IT) industry is expected to face a shortage of between 7,000 and 15,000 professionals, as Malaysia rides the wave of the growing digital economy. The industry is currently in need of specialised workers in various IT fields. By 2025, the IT industry will require one million specialised working professionals as the industry is experiencing a rampant growth.

The Information Technology (IT) in Malaysia sector is exceptionally diverse and continues to grow. IT professionals often move between professional specialisations as their interests and expertise grow and change.
