The youth unemployment rate in Malaysia, at 10.9 per cent officially, is more than triple the national rate of 3.3 per cent and has been gradually rising over the past decade. Unemployed youth make up almost 60 per cent of the 504,000 currently unemployed. The Ministry of Education reported that 57,000 of 173,000 of last year’s graduates remained jobless after looking for a job for six months.

The prime reason for graduate youth unemployment is the mismatch of graduate qualifications with the country’s workforce needs. Of 1.47 million vacancies, 86.9 per cent are for low skilled jobs. Only 4.7 per cent of those advertised required any tertiary qualifications. Graduate unemployment was 9.6 per cent or 204,000 at the end of 2018.

The aim of studying at university is to obtain the qualifications and skills to get a good job with a decent salary so that we can improve our lives. Therefore, with such alarming youth unemployment rates in Malaysia, it would do well for students to choose the top universities in Malaysia for employability.

Sowter said the rankings offer data on the relationship between university choice and career outcomes.

“In so doing, they meet growing student demand for information about the potential employment benefits their education might offer, ” he said.

Taylor’s University remains in the 201-250 band. UCSI University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) are in the 251-300 band with UCSI moving up from the 301-350 band last year while UTAR was previously not ranked.

QS research director Ben Sowter said in a statement quoted by the news portal that nine Malaysian universities participated in this year’s rankings, including Taylor’s University (201-250 band), UCSI University (251-300 band) and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) (251-300 band).

In addition, UCSI University is ranked the nation’s best private university for the second year in a row, according to the QS World University Rankings 2020. UCSI rose 39 spots to be ranked 442 among the world’s universities, once again placing it in the top 2% of the world’s universities.

QS World University Rankings 2020 for Employability

Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is No.1 and retains the dual honour of being both world No.1 in the QS World University Rankings 2020, and for employability.

Stanford University is second and University of California, Los Angeles, is third.

The QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020 offer data regarding the relationship between university choice and career outcomes.

To explore the university-employability relationship, QS uses a unique five-metric method that captures each institution’s regard among 44,000 employers worldwide, alma mater data from 29,000 highly successful individuals, institutional industry partnerships, employer presence on campus, and location-adjusted graduate employment rate.

Sowter said there were 36 new entrants within the Top 500.

There were 758 institutions included in the final evaluation of the rankings with 682 institutions ranked.

Out of that, only 501 institutions were featured in the rankings.
