Twitter Increases Hiring Technical Staff to Over 100 Employees in Singapore by 2023

Twitter, on 25 January 2022, announced that it will be expanding its engineering centre in Singapore, where its Asia Pacific headquarters is also located, by doubling the number of engineers to over 100 staff by 2023. This will see technical hires in roles such as engineering, data science, machine learning, and product management. Separately, it is aiming for at least half its global workforce to be women by 2025, as well as is working on inclusive work practices such as asynchronous productivity.

This operation will not only enable a greater talent mix for Twitter, but will also accelerate its commitment to building a truly global, inclusive, and accessible product by creating a more distributed workforce outside of the US, according to the company’s statement.

The local technical team will:

  • Work hand-in-hand with Twitter’s dedicated engineering teams around the world;
  • Focus on core advancements to Twitter, like developing new product experiences and surfacing more personalised content for the people who use the platform, and
  • Drive platform efficiencies to increase speed and reliability.

Sharing his sentiments, Silvanus Lee, Director, Asia Pacific Engineering Centre, Twitter, said: “At Twitter, our purpose is to serve the public conversation. We are focused on product innovations and improvements, so that people around the world can have the best experience when they want to find out what’s happening, discuss a trending topic, or connect with their communities.

“Following the success of the centre’s establishment where we built high-quality teams and strengthened our technical capabilities in areas such as machine learning, we are focused on continuing to attract and retain world-class talent. With the distinguished tech ecosystem in Singapore, I am confident that we will be able to raise the bar on the craft of engineering, and drive global impact for Twitter.”

Yu Sasamoto, Vice President of Asia Pacific and Japan, Twitter, chimed in that Twitter sees Asia Pacific (and Singapore) as “a steadfast growth engine” as the company looks to better its service for people, customers, and partners in the region – which it is excited to do so with “many more bright engineers”.

Apart from its expansion, Twitter also revealed that it had set new diversity goals for 2025. As part of these goals, it is aiming for at least half of its global employees to be women. Meanwhile, it has already established inclusive work practices such as asynchronous productivity, to level the playing field for employees across all locations and time zones.
