Jerry Cheong, Diploma in ICT at Asia Pacific University

A lot of students assume that all Diploma in Computer Science courses at the universities are the same. They are not. It is important when choosing the Diploma in Computer Science, to look at the subjects offered.

Some Diploma in Computer Science are more multimedia based while others focus on programming. Some universities could have a diploma with a specialism in software engineering. You have to decide which area you want to focus on in your future career before choosing the college or university, if not, you will end up with a diploma but without the necessary knowledge and skills in Computer Science.

This is important because during interviews for Computer Science jobs, you will be given a test to assess your knowledge in Computer Science. If you do not pass that test, you will not move on to be interviewed. Computer Science is not like a business course, it is technical. If you do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, you will not go far in your career.

A lot of students make the mistake in choosing a cheap college because they assume that all Computer Science diplomas are the same so there is no need to invest more. In saving a few thousand Ringgit for the few years in the diploma, they are throwing away hundreds of thousands in salary increments and promotions for the next 50 years of their work life because they did not gain the knowledge and skills that a good university would provide for them.
