This phase focuses on the fundamental knowledge of medical sciences with exposure to clinical medicine, and is undertaken at Taylor’s University. Our MBBS programme students will have access to specialised lab facilities and gain clinical training at local hospitals. Students will be taught history taking and physical examination techniques using both simulated patients and models, where they will learn how to identify patients’ problems and propose investigation plans for the patients. Upon completion of Phase I, students will be equipped with knowledge in basic medical sciences and clinical skills.

Phase II (Year 3-5) – Taylor’s University and selected hospitals

Phase II involves clinical rotations at designated hospitals from the Ministry of Health (MOH), where students will gain hands-on experience with patients. In Phase II, MBBS students are rotated in all clinical disciplines required for undergraduate training, i.e. Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and Anaesthesia & Intensive Care. Facilitating Teaching and Learning
The School has customised, well-equipped and industry standard laboratories that are designed to integrate teaching with the practical application of medical sciences. Our facilities are on par with the standards set by the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) and the Ministry of Higher Education, thus ensuring that our students are exposed to the most up-to-date equipment that are on par with international medical universities.
Anatomy Lab
In this lab, students master basic knowledge of human body structures, and obtain hands-on experience in dissecting the cadavers to study human anatomy. This lab also provides wet and dry specimens of the human body that have been carefully dissected and preserved, anatomical models of different organs as well as ample stock of dry, original and plastic bones for the study of bones and joints to improve their understanding of not just the human anatomy, but how it plays a role in human physiology as well.
Multidisciplinary Lab
This state-of-the-art facility at Taylor’s University enables our foundation and degree level students to have holistic practical experience and to gain appreciation for human physiology, biochemistry and microbiology at a molecular level. This facility helps to test principles of human physiology in the form of simulated and real experiments, and contains digital and permanent slides of all human tissues and several microscopes for the study of microscopic anatomy, bacteriology and virology.
Clinical Skills Suite
The suite is a purpose-built centre that enables medical students at Taylor’s University to improve their basic clinical skills and practice history taking, physical examination and bedside procedure that help to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients in a safe, supervised, and stress-free environment. It has standardised patients and computerised human models (mannequins) capable of simulating diseases.
Anatomy and Pathology Museum
The museum features various anatomy teaching collections that are arranged according to the human body. It also exhibits gross pathological specimens that are crucial for orienting students to surgical pathology and helping them to correlate what they learn in lectures to a hands-on approach with real anatomy specimens.
Library Resources
Taylor’s University library houses a collection of more than 20,000 volumes and journals on science, mathematics, technology, medicine, biomedicine and health. Students will gain access to media resources that contain over 3,000 medical books and online journals, as well as an exclusive collection of database and platforms for self-assessment.

CLINICAL ELECTIVE MODULE

Experience hands-on patient care in different countries via Taylor’s Clinical Elective Module. Grooming Reflective Medical Practitioners
Taylor’s School of Medicine adopts a hybrid curriculum, which encapsulates both the traditional and integrated problem-based approach into its teaching and learning activities. The hybrid curriculum ensures that our medical students are able to apply their extensive body of knowledge into professional practice, enabling them to enhance the wellbeing of their patients and community.
Through lectures, problem-based learning (PBL), practical classes, independent learning, clinical skills sessions and clinical training, students are equipped with research-oriented thinking, critical thinking and professional conduct. They are also taught how to gather and interpret medical information from various sources and successfully apply them.

The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC), which is woven through the School’s curriculum, encourages selfdirected learning. Seminars and PBL sessions equip students with lifelong learning skills and digital literacy, while interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are instilled through hands-on involvement in campaigns, events as well as community service activities.
From the onset, the School establishes a patient-based learning model. Classroom learning is injected with teaching exercises, and students are assessed based on how they interact with patients in addition to how they diagnose illnesses and prescribe medication.

First-year students are given the opportunity to examine patients on campus (simulated patients) or at hospitals, educating them on the basics of patient’s history taking and physical examination. This early clinical exposure establishes the relevance of medical sciences to its clinical application and forms the basis of student’s medical education.

We also encourage our students to explore their passion in the field of medical sciences through the Student Selected Module (SSM). Under the SSM, students have the opportunity to explore specialised areas that are of interest to them, completing one basic and one extensive research project on any topic of their choice.
