Phase I (Year 1 & 2) – Taylor’s University

This phase focuses on the fundamental knowledge of medical sciences with exposure to clinical medicine, and is undertaken at Taylor’s University. Our MBBS programme students will have access to specialised lab facilities and gain clinical training at local hospitals. Students will be taught history taking and physical examination techniques using both simulated patients and models, where they will learn how to identify patients’ problems and propose investigation plans for the patients. Upon completion of Phase I, students will be equipped with knowledge in basic medical sciences and clinical skills.
Phase II (Year 3-5) – Taylor’s University and selected hospitals
Phase II involves clinical rotations at designated hospitals from the Ministry of Health (MOH), where students will gain hands-on experience with patients. In Phase II, MBBS students are rotated in all clinical disciplines required for undergraduate training, i.e. Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine and Anaesthesia & Intensive Care. The Taylor’s University Medical School Night is organised by students and lecturers annually, as an avenue to get better acquainted with each other in an informal setting, and teach students about managing events.

Taylor’s School of Medicine adopts a hybrid curriculum, which encapsulates both the traditional and integrated problem-based approach into its teaching and learning activities. The hybrid curriculum ensures that our medical students are able to apply their extensive body of knowledge into professional practice, enabling them to enhance the wellbeing of their patients and community.
Through lectures, problem-based learning (PBL), practical classes, independent learning, clinical skills sessions and clinical training, students are equipped with research-oriented thinking, critical thinking and professional conduct. They are also taught how to gather and interpret medical information from various sources and successfully apply them.
The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC), which is woven through the School’s curriculum, encourages selfdirected learning. Seminars and PBL sessions equip students with lifelong learning skills and digital literacy, while interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are instilled through hands-on involvement in campaigns, events as well as community service activities.
From the onset, the School establishes a patient-based learning model. Classroom learning is injected with teaching exercises, and students are assessed based on how they interact with patients in addition to how they diagnose illnesses and prescribe medication.
First-year students are given the opportunity to examine patients on campus (simulated patients) or at hospitals, educating them on the basics of patient’s history taking and physical examination. This early clinical exposure establishes the relevance of medical sciences to its clinical application and forms the basis of student’s medical education.
We also encourage our students to explore their passion in the field of medical sciences through the Student Selected Module (SSM). Under the SSM, students have the opportunity to explore specialised areas that are of interest to them, completing one basic and one extensive research project on any topic of their choice.
