FOR the past 10 years, KBU International College, Petaling Jaya, has been organising design showcases for their School of

Design’s graduating class. It was no different this year with 101 students from the college recently displaying their detailed final-year projects and impressive artwork at One Utama Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya. KBU International College is acknowledged to be one of the best colleges for interior design in Malaysia and is an excellent choice for Graphic Design and Product Design.
In the design showcase dubbed SEQUENCE 14, students from the Interior Architecture and Design as well as the Graphic Design programmes were given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the public as well as potential employers. KBU chief executive Datuk Dr Teo Chiang Liang said that as the college had developed a strong link with the design industry, these showcases have been a platform to headhunt for potential employees.
Malaysian Design Council chairman Prof Datuk Dr Ahm-ad Zainuddin, who launched the showcase, noted that the high quality of

work on display was an indicator of the national standard of design.
“The nurtured skills, competency and knowledge exhibited today is great and I am confident the students here will be able to go far, both regionally and globally. “However, we must work harder if we want Malaysia to be a design nation like Korea, Japan, France and the United Kingdom,” he said.
Aside from the exhibition of project boards and 3D models, SEQUENCE 14 also had a workshop on designing for a changing world as well as a dialogue session featuring a panel of specialists from the design industry. Decorative items that were made by the college’s students were also up for sale.
Principal Dr Chee Choong Kooi said that the success of the showcase, themed “maze” made him proud. “The education journey is like a maze and filled with ups and downs. SEQUENCE 14 is where the students exit the maze, a culmination of months of hard work,” he said. He added that, while KBU’s application to be granted university status from the Higher Education Ministry was still pending, the college had already taken measures to upgrade its campus and expand programme offerings.
Dr Chee also noted that, in recent years, there had been an increase in demand for design courses at KBU International College. He attributed this to the strategic collaboration, which the college in Petaling Jaya, enjoyed with Nottingham Trent University, UK. Graduates receive the degree awarded by Nottingham Trent University.
“There is a definite connection between KBU and our university,” said NTU senior lecturer in graphic design Jonathan

Hamilton. He urged students to incorporate their national identity into their designs. “The world right now is hungry for a difference. The Malaysian identity is one that needs to be celebrated, and I hope that students will continue to include this in their designs as they have in the showcase,” he said.
Scholarships are available to deserving students. Affordable hostel accommodation is available.
