There are also plans for the country to appoint a chief data scientist over the next few years, a move aimed at developing local capabilities in data analytics.
In 2015, only 80 data scientists in local industry in Malaysia, targeting 1,500 by 2020. MALAYSIA’S national ICT custodian Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) said that seven public and private institutes of higher learning in country will be offering data science courses to university students, graduates and working professionals for careers in data analytics.
A report from the recent Digital Workforce of The Future by LinkedIn, which revealed that a combination of skills encompassing Big Data, data analytics and web development registered a 21% growth in demand. In Malaysia, the top five in-demand digital skills are big data, software and user testing, mobile development, Cloud computing and software engineering management.
High Salary for Data Science or Big Data Analytics in Malaysia

Asean Data Analytics Exchange (ADAX) CEO Sharala Axryd believes data professionals such as data engineers, data analysts and data scientists are the “sexiest jobs” of the 21st century.
Sharala told The Malaysian Reserve in a recent email interview that these careers are in hot demand due to their highly valued skill sets.
“The world has positioned data professionals as jobs of the future, as the prospects of data science and analytics are endless.
“Besides a healthy remuneration package, data professionals are highly sought after and are needed across multiple industries within the next few years,” Sharala said.
She further said local data science fresh graduates can demand starting pay in the range of RM4,000-RM8,000 — making it the highest paid entrylevel job in the country today.
An experienced professional in the field can demand up to RM15,000, she said.
“Data has become the new oil, as companies are constantly inundated with data that they need deciphering in order to create value for their products, services, customers and themselves.”
Sharala opined that it is important for the relevant bodies to create awareness among both youths and their parents, so that the latter can encourage their children to pursue beyond “traditional” jobs.
“I believe there will never be a shortage of data now and in the future, but there is a shortage of data professionals.
“People have no idea how huge is the demand for data scientists, data engineers and data analysts,” Sharala said.
She acknowledged many enterprises are struggling with the complexity of today’s big data and data science ecosystem.
“Though they recognise the opportunity of emerging practices, the shortage of trained data professionals remains at the top of the list of data science challenges that enterprises face.”
