Where you study can have an impact on your salary. Though no university in the world, not even Oxford or Cambridge can guarantee you’ll become rich, it can increase your chances of earning a high income in your career. A top university would have the right systems in place to educate and equip you with the latest knowledge and skills so that you can hit the ground running when you start your job. With those skills, you can then outperform the rest and get promotions faster and command a higher salary.

Universities such as Taylor’s which is ranked Top 4 in the World for Employability,  Multimedia University (MMU) has 97% employability within 6 months of graduation according to Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) Tracer Study & MOE Kemaskini Status Pekerjaan 2015 and Asia Pacific University (APU) where 94.5% of their graduates find jobs before graduation.

Therefore the university you go to can have a huge impact on your future career in terms of how much you earn. This is simply to highlight the fact that where you study is very important to your career path.

If you’re motivated to earn a high salary, you should be choosing to study at top private universities in Malaysia. Higher education leads to much better earnings than those earned by non-graduates, although students also need to realise that their subject of choice is important in determining how much of an earnings advantage they will have.

Many people will try to advise you on what to study, some would speak with experience and knowledge but most would just simply talk without any experience or evidence to support what they say. It is important to talk to the right people to help you make the best choice with regard to your future.

Rising Petrol price, high inflation, higher living costs, and an unstable world economy add to all our worries about having enough money to survive. Because of these uncertainties, many students have told me that they want to lessen the burden on their parents by “sacrificing” to study at the cheapest university.

On the other hand, I would disagree with this wrong thinking. Now, we all know the famous Chinese saying that “Cheap doesn’t mean it is good” or you get what you pay for. In addition, I am not saying that if your parents cannot afford for your studies at a private university, you must force yourself. What I am saying is that if your family can afford it, then go for it.

Of course, joining a top private university doesn’t automatically make you rich once you graduate. It is the environment and the opportunities that the university gives you and you take advantage of so that you will increase your chances of success.

Paying a bit more at top private university allows you access to better facilities, an English-speaking environment, qualified lecturers with more experience, better coordinated internships, and activities to help develop your soft skills.

All these, will equip you to be better prepared to face the challenges of a competitive work force. Hence, with the better preparation, you will rise up faster in promotions and therefore achieve higher salary quicker. With solid financial planning, you will become rich faster.

Studying at a top ranking university or college in Malaysia gives you a lot of opportunities in your future professional life. Top universities provide a high standard of education that equips you well for your future career. Furthermore, a degree earned at a reputable university in Malaysia makes seeking employment much easier whether locally or globally.

I think most of us will agree that the aim of pursuing a higher education is to get a good job that provides a good salary so that we can have a good life. A stable job with high salary will allow us to maintain the lifestyle that we want and to take care of our family.

Studying at a top private college in Malaysia will set you apart because you will receive a high standard of education supported by excellent facilities. Many students make the mistake of choosing the cheapest college or university and regret when they could not get a good job because they did not gain the necessary knowledge and skills for their job.

  • Qualified lecturers with more experience
    • Better universities will hire full time lecturers that are qualified and possess the necessary teaching experience. Full time lecturers are important as they will be at the university full time to be able to answer your questions and assist you in contrast to part-time lecturers.
    • Lecturers with more experience will command a higher salary, therefore, will go to universities who can pay them. If the fees at the university that you are interested in is very cheap, it would also mean that the lecturer won’t get paid much.
  • English-speaking environment
    • Top Private universities provide an English-speaking environment where there are international students with whom you have to communicate in English during the course for 3 to 5 years and this will help you to improve. On the other hand, if you choose a university where you would be “comfortable’ at and most of them communicate in Mandarin, you won’t have the motivation or chance to talk in English. And “Yes” the lecturers would teach in English (some may talk in Mandarin) but that’s not the point because you won’t be the one talking and practising your English skills.
    • In addition, soft skills such as an English speaking environment, leadership skills, communication skills and internship programs will help the graduate stand out and be very successful. Research has shown that graduates with a good command of English has a 25% higher salary than those who don’t.
  • Internships
    • Well coordinated internships allow students to put into practice what you have learnt throughout your university studies at a company. You will gain valuable insights into what working in a real job is and gain experience. Furthermore, interacting with your colleagues, you will learn from their experience and advise.
    • Performing well during your internship, the company may offer you a job when you graduate.
  • Participation in Competitions
    • Top private universities will provide opportunities for their top performing students to participate in competitions related to their course. Participating in competitions will build your profile, experience and network.
    • When you win at these competitions, it will add value to your resume and thus be able to command a higher salary.
  • Mobility Programme or Student Exchange Programme
    • A mobility programme will enrich your international exposure while studying for 1 semester overseas. You will learn to be independent and gain cultural insights as well as a wealth of knowledge and experiences.

A lot of students also like to wait a long while before they start their Foundation studies. We must keep in mind that “TIME = Money”. The faster you begin your studies, the faster you complete, the faster you begin your work and gain valuable work experience and this translates to money in term of your salary.

Remember, the decisions that you make now, can change your life (in this case, your salary) forever. Take time to discuss with an experienced counselor to make your decisions wisely. Choose the university with the best environment and not the university with the cheapest fees, so that your salary will high for the next 60 years of your work life

I have made a simple calculation of how much you would earn at age 31, if you begin your studies in January. Look at the amount of money that you could have ad make the right decision.

1) SPM – Foundation (1 year) – Degree (3 years) = graduate at age 21

a) Graduates with good command of the English language

  • Starting salary as Executive at RM2,800 x 12 months of first year work = RM33,600
  • 2nd year  salary after 12% increment = RM3,136 x 12 months = RM37,632
  • 3rd year salary after promotion to Senior Executive because of hard work & good English communication skills, given a RM600 increment = RM3,736 x 12 months = RM44,832
  • 4th year salary after 12% increment = RM4,148 x 12 months = RM50,208
  • 5th year salary after 12% increment = RM4,646 x 12 months = RM55,752
  • 6th year salary after promotion to Assistant Manager  because of hard work & good English communication skills, given a RM600 increment = RM5,246 x 12 months = RM62,952
  • 7th year of salary after 12% increment = RM5,876 x 12 months = RM70,512
  • 8th year of salary after 12% increment = RM6,581 x 12 months = RM78,972
  • 9th year salary after 12% increment = RM7,371 x 12 months = RM88,452
  • 10th year salary after promotion to Manager  because of hard work & good English communication skills, given a RM1,000 increment = RM8,371 x 12 months = RM100,452

Total salary at age 31 = RM623,364

b) Graduates with weak English communication skills

  • Starting salary as Executive at RM2,700 x 12 months of first year work = RM32,400
  • 2nd year  salary after 8% increment = RM2,916 x 12 months = RM34,992
  • 3rd year salary after 8% increment = RM3,149 x 12 months = RM37,788
  • 4th year salary after 8% increment = RM3,401 x 12 months = RM40,812
  • 5th year salary after promotion to Senior Executive given a RM600 increment = RM4,001 x 12 months = RM48,012
  • 6th year salary after 8% increment = RM4,321 x 12 months = RM51,852
  • 7th year of salary after 8% increment = RM4,666 x 12 months = R55,992
  • 8th year of salary after 8% increment = RM5,039 x 12 months = RM60,468
  • 9th year salary after 8% increment = RM5,442 x 12 months = RM65,304
  • 10th year salary after 8% increment = RM5,877 x 12 months = RM70,524

Total salary at age 31 = RM498,144 ( a difference of RM125,220 from the graduate with good English taking the Foundation course)

2) SPM – STPM (2 years) – Fail STPM so take Foundation (1 year) – Degree (3 years) = graduate at age 23

Graduates with weak English communication skills

Total salary at age 31 = RM362,316 ( a difference of RM261,048 from the graduate with good English taking the Foundation course)

The calculation is only until your age of 31. Imagine how much you could have earned or lost by age 60. Think and decide well.

Do you want to be at age 47, with a house loan, 3 young children and your father in the hospital, and look at your low salary wishing you had made a better decision 30 years ago. Think and decide well.
