How to Apply for PTPTN Loan to Study Degree & Diploma Courses in Malaysia

PTPTN Loan Information on the Application, Eligibility, Criteria and Repayment

  • The PTPTNEducation Loan Scheme was established by the Malaysian Government with the purpose of providing educational loans to students studying in Higher Education Institutions locally.
  • The PTPTN Loan will enable students to finance a full or partial tuition fee and living cost during the study period at university
  • Malaysian students are eligible to apply for the PTPTN Loan as long as they are citizens under the age of 45 and enrolled for MQA accredited Diploma or Degree programmes at Private Universities or Colleges

Students nowadays have the opportunity to complete a diploma or degree programme at a private college or university with the support of the PTPTN Loan which covers some of the tuition costs at a very low interest rate of 1%. The PTPTN loan is on need-based, meaning that lower-income families can borrow a larger amount, and the loans offered for private institutions are higher than public institutions since the tuition fees are typically higher. In addition, science-related courses tend to have higher loan amounts than humanities courses.

The next step after completing your secondary school or Pre-University is to continue on for your tertiary education studies at university. In choosing a course or university to study, finances play an important role in your decision-making. The PTPTN Loan is one of the top choices for students because of its low interest rate.

With the PTPTN Loan, it eases your financial burden and allow you to pursue the course of study without having too much to worry about. Students who want to apply for the loan may need to take into consideration the criteria, loan amount and the application process.

Students need to have registered for the course of study before they can apply for the PTPTN Loan. In addition, students should wait for the university to brief them on the steps on how to apply for the PTPTN Loan.

Please note that generally, you have to pay the First Semester Fees first and then apply for the loan, which would take 2-3 months to process. The loan should be given out in time for the second semester but if it doesn’t happen in time, you have to prepare the fees for the Second Semester.

What is the Interest Rate for the PTPTN Loan?

PTPTN has a very low-interest rate which is a flat interest rate of 1%.

For example, a student has a total loan amount of RM 50,000 and has a repayment period of 15 years.

Interest Amount: RM 50,000 x 1% x 15 years = RM 7,500 (RM 41.67 per month)

Total Monthly Repayment: (RM 50,000 + RM 7,500) / 15 years = RM 319.44 per month

Based on this example, the PTPTN loan’s monthly interest is RM 41.67. Furthermore, students who can settle their loans within 12 months of their studies would not incur the 1% interest and would only need to repay the amount borrowed.

When do we need to Begin the PTPTN Loan Repayment?

You need to start repaying the loan 12 months after graduating

The repayment period for the PTPTN loan begins 12 months after a student completes their studies. The loan repayment period would depend on the total loan amount.

  • Students must repay total loan amounts less than RM 10,000 within 5 years.
  • Students must repay total loan amounts from RM 10,000 to RM 22,000 within 10 years.
  • Students must repay total loan amounts from RM 22,000 to RM 50,000 within 15 years.
  • Students must repay total loan amounts of more than RM 50,000 within 20 years.

Students struggling to make their repayments can always go to a PTPTN branch and negotiate to restructure their loan repayments.

How Long do I have to Pay Back the PTPTN Loan and How much Each Monthly Payment?

The length of time taken to pay back the PTPTN loan is based on the total loan amount taken:

Total Loan Amount Loan Repayment Period Estimated Repayment
Less than RM10,000 5 years Less than RM175 per month
RM10,000 to RM22,000 10 years RM92 to RM202 per month
RM22,000 to RM50,000 15 years RM140 to RM319 per month
RM50,001 and above 20 years RM250 to RM750 per month

Loan defaulters may be blacklisted

Not repaying the PTPTN loan can bring about serious consequences. The failure of people to repay their loans has resulted in the government imposing and enforcing some measures to deter defaulters.

The main consequence is being blacklisted in the Central Credit Reference Information System (CCRIS). This system stores financial information on individuals who borrow money across Malaysia, and banks usually utilise this data to determine if an individual is a good borrower. Therefore, should an individual be blacklisted, they would immediately be rejected upon applying for credit cards, home loans, or personal loans.

How much is the PTPTN Loan Amount that you can apply for?

The amount of loan that students can apply for will depend on the household income. This means the income of both parents combined.
