Darren, Finance & Investment Graduate from UCSI University

Financial Economics is a branch of economics that analyses the use and distribution of resources in markets in which decisions are made under uncertainty.  It therefore centres on decision making under uncertainty in the context of the financial markets, and the resultant economic and financial models and principles, and is concerned with deriving testable or policy implications from acceptable assumptions. It is built on the foundations of microeconomics and decision theory.

Decisions made in the financial industry must often take into account future events, whether those be related to individual stocks, portfolios or the market as a whole.

Financial economics uses economic theory to evaluate how time, risk (uncertainty), opportunity costs and information that can create incentives or disincentives in the decision-making process. Its concern is how financial variables are interrelated, such as prices, interest rates and shares, as opposed to those concerning the real economy. It has two main areas of focus: asset pricing (or “investment theory”) and corporate finance; the first being the perspective of providers of capital and the second of users of capital.
