High Job Demand for Qualified Electrical & Electronic Engineers from Top Private Universities in Malaysia
There are 1,900 active E&E companies which provide employment to over 350,000 people. In line with ETP projections, Malaysia’s E&E sector growth is expected to be robust in the coming years. This growth will require a steady supply of skilled talent, both in numbers and in the appropriate skills-sets, to meet the present and future needs of the sector.
This gap is due to several factors that includes competition from other sectors and economies for the same talent pool, as well as the un-employability of graduates that reduces the pool of addressable talent
The sector also faces a situation of skills gaps, where adequately trained and skilled talent, both at entry and experienced levels are lacking. These are mainly in the areas of R&D and to some extent Engineering Support.
The report found that Fresh Graduates or Entry-level Talent Not Industry-Ready (lacks required skill-sets) therefore it is

The IPSOS report identified eight key talent shortage areas in the E&E field and the areas in demand for E&E fresh graduates are found in 5 areas which are:
- IC Design Engineers with a Degree in Electrical & Electronic with emphasis in IC Design / Microelectronics. They are involved in the design of Integrated Circuits e.g. implement and integrate IC layout design for digital and analog circuit, perform thorough verifications on layout designs using industry leading EDA tools.
- The IC Design Engineer must have knowledge and skills in hardware specification, analysis, logic design, modeling, simulation, verification, synthesis, test and maintenance of integrated circuits. They should be able to understand design from a system-level perspective. They are mainly employed in around 20 IC design companies in Malaysia such as Intel, Altera, ICMiC, Ssymmid etc.
- Embedded System / Firmware Engineer with a degree in Computer Engineering or E&E. They Create and implement algorithms which enable the hardware to function. They must be proficient in C/C++, assembly programming and debugging skills in embedded systems. Experience in Device Driver development for embedded systems and a strong mixed background in software and hardware engineering. Embedded/ Firmware engineers are mainly employed in companies that designs or supports embedded system / firmware enabled devices e.g. Finisar, Pradotec, Western Digital
- Software Engineer with a degree in Software Engineering or E&E Engineering. Software Engineers in the E&E field willdesign and develop the many types of software for product and engineering support (e.g. automation, testing equipment). They should be familiar with specialized languages relevant to the technologies employed (e.g. Machine Language, Assembly Language, C,C++, Java) and be proficient in Software Product Life Cycle and familiar with software testing methodology at system/board level.Software Engineers find work where navigational, measuring control instruments etc. are manufactured and/or designed in-house e.g. Altera, Philips Lumileds, NEC Corporation etc.
- Radio Frequency (RF) Engineers with a degree in E&E Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering. They are responsible for the analysis, design, implementation, optimization and enhancement of wireless telecommunications products and networks. They should be able to understand electronic hardware design, circuit board material, antenna radiation, and the effect of interfering frequencies that prevent optimum performance within the piece of equipment being developed. RF Engineers are also required where there are RF Technology employed e.g. Chip Design and Wafer Fabrication.RF Engineers are mainly employed in companies with that designs and manufactures devices which operate in the Radio Frequency spectrum (e.g. Cell Phones, Wi-Fi and Public Safety Solutions) e.g. Motorolla, Agilent, National Instruments
- Product Design R&D Engineers with a degree in Mechanical Engineering or E&E Engineering. Electrical & Electronics (E&E) is a major industry of Malaysia, which has grown by leaps and bounds since 1972. The total E&E export for 2012 was RM256.4 billion which represents 36.5% of Malaysia’s total exports and 59.3% of total manufacturing exports.

What is the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM)?
The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board. Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is the only body certifying Professional Engineers in Malaysia.
This regulatory body for engineering practices in Malaysia was set-up by the Malaysian government under the Registration of Engineers Act (1967) to administer and to enforce the Engineering Act and its provisions to protect public interest.
Only Graduate Engineers and Professional Engineers registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) are entitled to practice engineering in Malaysia. All engineering practitioner MUST register with BEM within 6-months of practice.

After a few years of practical experience (supervised by a professional engineer), the graduate engineer can apply to sit for Professional Interview (with IEM). If he/she passes the Interview, he/she can apply to Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) to be a Professional Engineer that entitles him/her to use the title Ir.
