Civil engineering is the oldest branch of the engineering profession. With new, lighter and stronger materials to work with, and greater challenges to be met, there is no limit to what civil engineers can achieve. They build towers, bridges, roads, railways and tunnels; airports and mines; dams, ports and harbours; water supplies and sewerage schemes; and irrigation systems and flood mitigation works.

If you study at a university that is not accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), you cannot practice as a Civil Engineer.

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board. A professional engineer (Ir or PEng) is a person who is licensed to practice to practice engineering in Malaysia after meeting all requirements of
the  (e.g. pass PI Examination).

Only an Ir/P.Eng. can sign and seal engineering documents that are engineering documents that are submitted to a public authority or for public and private clients. This is very important especially for Civil Engineers who needs to become a Professional Engineer in order to sign the blueprints.

Students after SPM or O-Levels can enter into a Foundation in Science or Foundation in Engineering at the best private universities in Malaysia for 1 year before continuing on to the 4-year BEM Accredited Civil Engineering degree. Pre-University graduates in Malaysia from programmes such as UEC, STPM, A-Levels, SAM, CPU, AUSMAT and others may enter directly into the Civil Engineering degree providing they meet the minimum entry requirements.

The Engineering Degrees of these universities are accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) which is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This accreditation ensures that Engineering Graduates will have the following benefits in countries who are signatories of the Washington Accord:

  • Opportunities to register as a Graduate Engineer with Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) or the relevant professional bodies in other countries who are signatories under the Washington Accord.
  • Pathways to becoming a Professional or Chartered Engineer.
  • Assurance that graduates are considered as having met international academic standards for engineering practice.

Other than the academic quality of the universities, students must seriously consider the student environment. Research has shown that employers have rejected 56% of job interviewees because of the lack of skill in the English language.

Graduates with a strong command of the English language have also been found to earn 25% higher salaries and have faster promotions in their jobs. Therefore, in order to succeed, students should choose a private university with an English-speaking student environment to enhance their career competitiveness.

You may save a few thousand by going to a cheaper university with a non-English speaking environment, but remember, you will be getting 25% lower salary and slower promotion for the next 50 years of your work life.

Studying Civil Engineering in Malaysia

In fact, any infrastructure that’s required to run our modern society needs the input of civil engineers along the way. Civil Engineering is designing and constructing society’s essential infrastructure to meet the challenges of pollution, traffic congestion, water and energy needs, and urban development. Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and therefore one of the most popular. Civil engineering is responsible for the construction and maintenance of both the natural world and the man-made built environments.

Civil engineering is about constructing, managing and maintaining the infrastructure that supports modern society including buildings, bridges, roads, railways and tunnels; airports and mines; dams, ports and harbours; water supplies and sewerage schemes; and irrigation systems and flood mitigation works.

Civil engineering is based on maths, mechanics and physics, but it’s about creative problem-solving at the same time. Students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM & A-Levels should be good in these subjects. And as most graduates go on to become managers in their careers, it’s also about understanding what people need to be an effective team.

Civil engineers may specialise in particular areas of major works such as structural engineering, water resources, construction, environmental, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. The civil engineering profession in Malaysia is very broad, with opportunities to work in many specialist areas such as:

  • engineering construction and management
  • geotechnical engineering
  • structural engineering
  • transport engineering
  • water engineering
  • civil engineering with architecture

Civil engineers produce society’s essential infrastructure, from bridges, roads, railways, dams, ports and buildings to water systems and power plants. Civil engineers take on the challenges many of us face every day, such as pollution, traffic in our cities as well as urban development to cater to our growing populations.

Growing cities and more people have high water and energy demands, which civil engineering takes care of Career Opportunities in Civil Engineering With a degree in Civil Engineering you could work in all fields of infrastructure development, from constructing skyscrapers through to design and building dams and bridges. You could also work in regulatory and planning roles with government agencies.

They are involved with infrastructure and environmental projects. It involves the planning, design, supervising, construction and maintaining of facilities for both the public and private sectors.

Civil Engineering involves the design and construction of buildings, transportation facilities and engineering structures like bridges, dams, roads, airports, tunnels, bridges,  water supply and sewage systems, waste treatment, harbours, railways, highways and other public utilities.

They must consider many factors in the design process, from the construction costs and expected lifetime of a project to government regulations and potential environmental hazards such as landslides, floods, earthquakes and hurricanes.

Creativity and innovation are needed to solve problems such as the SMART Tunnel which solves transportation and flood problems or the Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) currently being built in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The job prospects are good for Civil Engineers in Malaysia as the country is still growing and major companies also have projects in developing countries.

The Civil Engineering degree programme at UCSI University is designed to cater to today’s modern world needs and respond to society’s escalating demands for a better quality of life.

The civil engineering programme focuses on the development of theoretical concepts, practical engineering skills and teamwork, comprising a wide range of relevant courses – including structural analysis and design, geotechnical study, hydrology and hydraulic, highway and traffic, water and sewer systems – that also emphasises management skills and economics, at the same time.

The primary objective of the engineering programme at UCSI University is to develop creative and well-trained individuals who are able to communicate fluently and coherently, demonstrate awareness of financial and ethical constraints, use their engineering knowledge and skills to critically and creatively evaluate situations or projects, and solve engineering problems.

The programme is suited for undergraduate students who combine intellectual talents with a creative, innovative and practical outlook – students who seek a wide variety of opportunities and challenges during their university course and later on in their careers as well as those who wish to further develop their skills to effect change and improve the environment on a local and global scale.

In this programme, students are also required to undergo industrial training under UCSI University’s Co-operative Placement (Co-op) Programme at the end of their 2nd and 3rd academic years – to learn from industry leaders and familiarize themselves with the actual working environment.

Towards the end of their course of study, students will undertake a one-semester capstone project to assess and gauge their understanding of their learning and the outcome of their formal education. They will also undertake a research and development project in their final year of study.

    1. Transport engineers plan, design and operate the large public and private infrastructure systems that connect our physical world. We need a broad range of continually evolving, large-scale transport infrastructure, including road, rail, air and water. Transport engineers quantify and optimise our mobility infrastructure networks to meet travel and freight demands, while ensuring safety, equity and sustainability, at minimal levels of congestion and cost.

Transport engineering has always been one of the essential civil engineering disciplines, impacting roadways, bridges, transit stations, airports and sea ports etc.

  1. Can you name sone good public or private university for Petroleum or civil engineering ??
Private university should be affordable but good in respect to teaching and campus….

    1. Although most students taking up civil engineering are guys, but that doesn’t mean that there are not girls in the courses. Employers do not look at sex when they hire graduates, they look at the skills and competence. So, if you like civil engineering, then go for it.
