Students after SPM or O-Levels can enter into a Foundation in Science or Foundation in Engineering at the best private universities in Malaysia for 1 year before continuing on to the 4-year BEM Accredited Mechanical Engineering degree.

Alternatively, students may enter the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with at least 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels including Maths & Science. Upon completion of the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, students may enter into Year 2 of the Mechanical Engineering degree.

Pre-University graduates in Malaysia from programmes such as UEC, STPM, A-Levels, SAM, CPU, AUSMAT and others may enter directly into the BEM Accredited Mechanical Engineering degree providing they meet the minimum entry requirements.

Choosing the right university to study mechanical engineering in Malaysia can be confusing. Students after SPM, UEC, STPM, O-Levels, A-Levels or Pre-U can have a confusing time trying to decide which is the best university for their mechanical engineering studies in Malaysia. It is important to do some research and ask experienced and knowledgeable counselors for advise in choosing the best one that fits you.

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board.

A professional engineer (Ir or PEng) is a person who is licensed to practice to practice engineering in Malaysia after meeting all requirements of
the  (e.g. pass PI Examination). Only an Ir/P.Eng. can sign and seal engineering documents that are engineering documents that are submitted to a public authority or for public and private clients.

A diploma programme is specific towards the area of study compared to Foundation, STPM or external Pre-University courses. The Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is more practical and upon completion you can either go work or continue on to the degree in Mechanical Engineering.  If you take the STPM, which is very difficult and takes 2 years, you would have completed a 2-year Diploma course. The STPM is just a Pre-University programme which is one step lower than a Diploma.

On a personal level, you will need to be confident, motivated and flexible.

In order to study engineering in Malaysia, you’ll obviously need a strong interest in problem solving, and maths and science, just as we discussed before, but you’ll also need a strong command of the English language. You’ll be spending a lot of time in the laboratory and you’ll be using your computer and maths skills a lot, in theory and practical work. There will be a lot of problem solving, and applying this to case studies, as well as work experience and theory essays.

As a general rule you’ll need to be good in maths, physics, chemistry and biology, and if you’re heading into a more specific area you’ll need to check out the specialist subjects for that, as they vary hugely. This is why it’s very important to decide on your subject quite soon, as you may need a different A level requirement, however as a general rule, maths and sciences are your basic needs.

Obviously the course you choose and the university will all make a difference to how much the degree will cost in terms of tuition fees, and you should talk to your parents about how much they have set aside for your studies, as this will go a long way into funding your engineering study adventure.

Malaysia.Having an EAC accredited engineering degree is the prerequisite for registration. The Public Service Department (JPA) would only allow graduates from the EAC accredited programmes or those recognized by EAC to join the public service.

Only programmes accredited by the EAC would be allowed to be offered at the institutions of higher learning in Malaysia, be it at public or private institutions.

New Engineering Programmes

Students who are the first batch of a new engineering programme at a university should be careful in choosing a university that has a good track record such as UCSI University or Asia Pacific University. Joining a university that has no track record in engineering will be risky as the engineering degree may not be accredited by the time the student graduates.

For a new programme, the university can only apply for accreditation at least 6 months before the final examination of the first intake of students.

Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) is the body delegated by BEM for accreditation of engineering degrees. The EAC is made of representatives of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) and the Public Services Department (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Malaysia (JPA)).

Academic Programme

The academic programme component must consist of a minimum total of 120 credit
hours (not including credits for remedial courses) made up as follows:
(a) A minimum of 80 credit hours shall be engineering courses consisting of
engineering sciences and engineering design/projects appropriate to the student’s
field of study.
(b) The remaining credit hours shall include sufficient content of general education
component (such as mathematics, computing, languages, general studies, cocurriculum, management, law, accountancy, economics, social sciences, etc.) that complements the technical contents of the curriculum.

Professional Engineer requires a substantial period of experiential formation in industry after the completion of an accredited academic programme, it is clearly inadequate, over the first few critical years, for the student’s perceptions of engineering to develop in complete isolation from the realities of practice.

Exposure to Engineering Practice
Exposure to engineering practice shall also be integrated throughout the curriculum as

it is a key component. In addition, exposure to professional engineering practice may also be obtained through a combination of the following:
(i) Lectures/talks by guest lecturers from industry
(ii) Academic staff with industrial experience
(iii) Courses on professional ethics and conduct
(iv) Industry visits
(v) An industry-based final year project
(vi) Regular use of a logbook in which industrial experiences are recorded.

It is considered that there is no real substitute for first-hand experience in an
engineering-practice environment, outside the IHLs. The EAC advocates that all
engineering academic staff acquire some exposure to such experience, in addition to the other elements suggested, and make efforts to assist all students gain placements of suitable quality.

The final-year project can provide one of the best means of introducing an investigative research oriented approach to engineering studies. The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board. Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is the only body certifying Professional Engineers in Malaysia.

Engineer Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) includes includes the following:

There is a shortage of qualified engineers in Malaysia suitable for the crucial role of overseeing construction projects and infrastructure development works, according to the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).
IEM president Datuk Lim Chow Hock told StarBiz that there were only about 150,000 experienced engineers in Malaysia.

“We are still short of 50,000 to meet the requirement in the construction and infrastructure sectors. The experienced engineers are needed in the consultation and management departments,” he said. Lim added that the demand for consultation and management engineers for government construction and infrastructure projects would mitigate the impact of the slowdown taking place in the construction industry.

“About 70% of our members are engineers in the development and construction sectors. “They can easily be reabsorbed to play consultation and management roles for government projects,” he said.

Lim added that about 30% of the members were involved in the electrical, electronic, and mechanical engineering industries. The IEM currently has about 43,000 members.

On the quality of the local engineering graduates, Lim said that there was concern on quality because a study done three years ago by IEM revealed that the local engineering graduates lacked certain fundamental understanding of engineering principles. “This is affecting their ability to execute their duties effectively.

Malaysia needs more than 1,000 engineers annually to meet industry demands, said Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp). TalentCorp CEO Johan Mahmood Merican said engineers in the electric and electronic (E&E) and oil and gas (O&G) sectors are highly sought after.

“The industry is hungry for engineers,” he said after opening the Sector Focus Career Fair 2014 at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) campus here.

Mirroring Johan Mahmood’s assessment was Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Industry Talent Management Division director Mohamad Ismail Abu Bakar. He said there was a need for expertise in electric and electronic (E&E) , oil and gas (O&G), mechanical engineering and chemical engineering.

“This is based on the type of projects MIDA has approved for investments coming in,” he said.

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). On 9 October 2016, Taylor’s Racing Team (TRT), raced to triumph to finish overall 1st runner-up placing and received RM10,000.00 from the Malaysian Automotive Institute at the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) ASEAN or FSAE-ASEAN.

Lead by its chief Engineer Farah Danial, TRT also brought home awards for winning the Design Presentation, Acceleration, Autocross and Skidpadcategories. The team also secured second for the Business Presentation, Endurance Drive and Fuel-Efficiency categories.

FSAE ASEAN has also gave us the opportunity to share our experience in Melbourne last year with other Malaysian teams which would help increase the standards of automotive engineering at university level here in Malaysia,” shared Farah.

“As for our journey to Melbourne this year, we aim in testing the car better to give us insights that can further verify our simulation results and help us prepare for 2017 car. We aim to improve our placement in 2016 World Ranking by going up the placement within the top 20 in FSAE Australasia,” she added.

Every semester, School of Engineering organises an Engineering Fair that showcases the students’ work to the campus community, industry members and visiting academicians. This is an avenue for students to demonstrate their technical skills and knowledge, and increase their exposure to aspects of marketing, event organisation and project management. Some of the projects done by our students are showcased below.

Application of Natural Fibres in Acoustic Panel

This project explored the opportunities to commercialise natural products such as coir, corn, oil palm fibres and their wastes, for general use. These products are found to be good sound absorbers at certain frequency bands.

Quadrocopter

This project aimed to design a cost efficient, aerodynamically and mechanically designed, 4-rotor helicopter to counter the disadvantages of the helicopter. The quadrocopter was installed with autopilot and long-range camera for navigation and rescuing operations.

NAE Grand Challenge Scholars Programme

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) is a combined curricular and extra-curricular programme with five components that are designed to prepare students to be the generation that solves the grand challenges facing society in this century.

The Grand Challenges are a call-to-action and serve as a focal point for society’s attention to opportunities and challenges affecting our quality of life. Taylor’s School of Engineering is the first school outside North America that is registered with GCSP.

Taylor’s Technology Innovation Centre (TTIC) was set-up to provide an avenue for the industry to gain access to the resources and expertise available at SOE. TTIC also serves as a platform for staff and students of the School to commercialise their inventions.

Through TTIC, the School hopes to provide an avenue for meaningful, industry-relevant projects and research work from the industry to be made available to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as staff.

This platform greatly benefits the industry as it provides a fresh perspective and resources to address industry issues without the burden of past practices. Since its establishment, TTIC has successfully supported numerous companies in the oil and gas, telecommunication, automotive and construction industries over the years.

As a School led by a strong research culture, Taylor’s University aim to develop future engineers who are able to look beyond engineering. The University believes in grooming engineering graduates who are not only well-versed in their technical knowledge, but can also understand, appreciate and analyse their role as well as their impact on society’s progress and existence.

Research Clusters
In order to reiterate the purposeful nature of engineering research done at the School, our research objectives have been realigned to the 14 Grand Challenges. To fully execute this, our staff and students form research groups or clusters to develop their respective solutions to address the Grand Challenges. This ensures that the efforts are effectively channelled towards tackling each of the Grand Challenges identified.

Taylor’s University highly qualified and passionate faculty possess extensive industry experience and actively pursue research in key areas of specialisation. Across the board, 65% of our teaching staff are PhD-holders, and most of them have published their research papers in leading journals and publications. Eureca Conference
Students are required to embark on a key research project in their fourth year of the undergraduate study, which must be aligned with their research group’s overall research objectives. The School organises the annual Engineering Undergraduate Research Catalyst (EURECA) Conference, where each student is expected to present their research paper, as a pre-requisite for graduation.
JESTEC – Peer-Reviewed Journal

The Journal of Engineering Science and Technology (JESTEC) is an open access journal published by the Taylor’s School of Engineering. JESTEC publishes and disseminates original peer-reviewed research articles, reviews and discussions on the latest developments in all fields of engineering, science and technology.     The lab allows teams to collaborate to produce robotic and automation solutions that can perform many industrial tasks that assist in increasing the accuracy and productivity of manufacturing facilities.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree programme at Taylor’s University is designed to equip students with a sound understanding of fundamental theories and concepts in mechanical engineering, primarily the scientific knowledge to solve challenges and design systems in automotive, power generation, aerospace and manufacturing industries, to elevate our quality of life.

Through this programme, students will able to construct and evaluate alternative design concepts, undertake detailed engineering analysis and mechanical design as well as manufacture prototypes and evaluate its performance.

Every semester, School of Engineering organises an Engineering Fair that showcases the students’ work to the campus community, industry members and visiting academicians. This is an avenue for students to demonstrate their technical skills and knowledge, and increase their exposure to aspects of marketing, event organisation and project management. Application of Natural Fibres in Acoustic Panel

This project explored the opportunities to commercialise natural products such as coir, corn, oil palm fibres and their wastes, for general use. These products are found to be good sound absorbers at certain frequency bands.

Quadrocopter

This project aimed to design a cost efficient, aerodynamically and mechanically designed, 4-rotor helicopter to counter the disadvantages of the helicopter. The quadrocopter was installed with autopilot and long-range camera for navigation and rescuing operations.

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) is a combined curricular and extra-curricular programme with five components that are designed to prepare students to be the generation that solves the grand challenges facing society in this century.

Taylor’s Technology Innovation Centre (TTIC) was set-up to provide an avenue for the industry to gain access to the resources and expertise available at SOE. TTIC also serves as a platform for staff and students of the School to commercialise their inventions.

Through TTIC, the School hopes to provide an avenue for meaningful, industry-relevant projects and research work from the industry to be made available to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as staff.

This platform greatly benefits the industry as it provides a fresh perspective and resources to address industry issues without the burden of past practices. Since its establishment, TTIC has successfully supported numerous companies in the oil and gas, telecommunication, automotive and construction industries over the years.

As a School led by a strong research culture, Taylor’s University aim to develop future engineers who are able to look beyond engineering. Eureca Conference
Students are required to embark on a key research project in their fourth year of the undergraduate study, which must be aligned with their research group’s overall research objectives. The School organises the annual Engineering Undergraduate Research Catalyst (EURECA) Conference, where each student is expected to present their research paper, as a pre-requisite for graduation.

The Journal of Engineering Science and Technology (JESTEC) is an open access journal published by the Taylor’s School of Engineering. JESTEC publishes and disseminates original peer-reviewed research articles, reviews and discussions on the latest developments in all fields of engineering, science and technology. The 1-year foundation in engineering programme at Taylor’s University equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue a successful engineering degree.
