Telecommunications engineering combines electrical engineering with computer science to enhance telecommunication systems. The work of a telecommunications engineer ranges from basic circuit design to strategic mass developments. A telecommunication engineer is responsible for designing and overseeing the installation of telecommunications equipment and facilities, such as complex electronic switching systems, copper wire telephone facilities, and fiber optics.

Telecommunication is a diverse field of engineering which is connected to electronics, civil, structural, and electrical engineering. They are responsible for providing the method for customers to have telephone and high-speed Internet data services. Telecom engineers are often expected, as most engineers are, to provide the best solution possible for the lowest cost to the company. This often leads to creative solutions to problems that often would have been designed differently without the budget constraints dictated by modern society.

In the earlier days of the telecom industry, massive amounts of cable were placed that were never used or have been replaced by modern technology such as fiber optic cable and digital multiplexing techniques. Students who are good in subjects like Add Maths and Physics can consider the degree in Telecommunications Engineering.

Students after SPM or O-Levels can go for the Foundation in Engineering or Foundation in Science at top private universities in Malaysia before continuing on to the 4-year degree in Telecommunications Engineering. You will need at least 5 credits in the relevant subjects to enter a Foundation course.

Alternatively, with at least 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels, students can enter the Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering for 2 years. After completing the diploma, students will receive advanced standing into Year 2 of the Telecommunications Engineering degree.

Students who have completed a Pre-University course in Malaysia such as Foundation, STPM, UEC, A-Levels, SAM, AUSMAT, MUFY, CPU, etc may enter into the Telecommunications Engineering degree Year 1 should they meet the relevant entry requirements of the particular university.

Students in Malaysia planning to study engineering should understand what it means to become a professional engineer and the pathway. To become a professional engineer in Malaysia, a student must graduate from an engineering degree that’s accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is recognised by the Washington Accord because Malaysia is one of its signatories therefore allowing graduates to be able to work in any country that has signed it.

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) registers graduates and professional engineers under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2002). The requirement for registration as a graduate engineer is a degree in engineering recognised by the Board. Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is the only body certifying Professional Engineers in Malaysia.

This regulatory body for engineering practices in Malaysia was set-up by the Malaysian government under the Registration of Engineers Act (1967) to administer and to enforce the Engineering Act and its provisions to protect public interest. Only Graduate Engineers and Professional Engineers registered with the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) are entitled to practice engineering in Malaysia.  All engineering practitioner MUST register with BEM within 6-months of practice.

A professional engineer (Ir or PEng) is a person who is licensed to practice to practice engineering in Malaysia after meeting all requirements of the  (e.g. pass PI Examination).
