One of the criteria for students in choosing a university is being able to afford the tuition fees. A scholarship would help students in deciding if they could afford going to the university or not. There are many types of scholarships offered in Malaysia from the Government, Private Companies and the Private Universities and Colleges. Students can only use one scholarship at a time for their studies and cannot combine scholarships from 2 or 3 sources.

In this article, we will only discuss about the scholarships from Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia. Students can apply for various types of scholarships from Private Universities & Colleges such as:

Merit Scholarships

Merit Scholarships are automatic and based on the number of distinctions (A’s) that students have obtained. There is no interview required.

Academic Scholarships

Academic Scholarships may be titled differently by the universities but it would generally be based on the students’ academic results, achievements at school & extra-curricular activities. Students would be required to go for an interview and scholarship amount would depend on the results of the interview. Scholarship amount would be up to Full Scholarship.

Sports Scholarships

Students who have represented their State or Malaysia in a particular sports may get up to Full Scholarship at private universities. There is no interview required but students may be required to represent the university for the particular sports at MAPCU or other sporting competitions.

Talent Scholarships

Talent scholarships would be based on the students’ skills and generally these scholarships are offered by Design Colleges. This is because design courses are not based too much on a student’s academic results but on their design skills.

Applying for Scholarships to Private Universities in Malaysia

I scored 10As in my SPM and needed scholarships to help me continue my studies. EduSpiral gave me the information online and took me around to the campuses to help me make the best choice.

Students applying for scholarships should take note of the deadlines and submit their applications accordingly. Applications submitted after the deadline would not be considered so do plan ahead. Read the scholarship application form well and obtain all the necessary documents and get them certified. Fill up the application form neatly.

Many top students tend to want to wait for the government scholarships and then if they didn’t get them, to try for scholarships from private companies and then finally only try for the scholarships at private universities. The problem with this, is that by the time you try for the scholarships for private universities, they may have closed by then and you would end up with no scholarship.

Generally, scholarships are applicable for the year that your results are released. Most private universities do not offer scholarships to students whose results were 3 years old or more.

If you are serious about getting the scholarship, you should prepare yourself well to handle the Scholarship Interviews. Prepare a list of answers to the possible questions that the interviewers may ask you. Be truthful and genuine. Practice before you go for the interview.

Students who need advise and guidance on how to apply for the scholarships, how to choose the right course or university, may WhatsApp us at 01111408838.
