The pathway to become a professional actuary in Malaysia can be long. One must pass the actuarial professional examinations and various on-the-job assessments, in addition to obtaining a degree. A normal actuarial studies degree spans 3 years. Thereafter, completing the professional exams may take another 3-7 years (considering working full-time while studying). Students should choose the best university in Malaysia for actuarial science to prepare them well to face the professional exams.

The journey to become a qualified actuary as outlined by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) – one of the most prominent professional organisation for actuaries in the world – is divided into four stages. The first is the Validated by Educational Experience (VEE) stage where students who receive grades of 70% and above for subjects in economics, corporate finance and applied statistics – will receive credit for these professional papers.

The second stage involves five preliminary exams that candidates must pass before proceeding to the penultimate stage, namely, the Fundamentals of Actuarial Practices course and the Associateship Professionalism Course (APC). This will qualify them as an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA). The final hurdle would be to qualify as a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

There are not many universities in Malaysia that offer the degree in Actuarial Science. Outstanding private universities in Malaysia for Actuarial Science or Actuarial Maths degree with VEE Paper exemptions from SOA are Asia Pacific UniversityUCSI University and  Taylor’s University.

How to Choose the Best Type of Business Course to Study in Malaysia?

My mum contacted EduSpiral to help advise me on which course & university to choose as I was quite confused. He took us to visit the universities & helped guide me to make the right choice.
Bryan Yap, Foundation in Business at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia

Choosing what to study and where to study is a weighty, often life-changing decision. Studying is after all, an investment in your future. You’re also investing your time and money. So when it comes to picking the right business course for you, it pays to do your homework. As seen above, there are many business courses that you can study at the universities in Malaysia.

Finding a business course that suits you is a process and takes time to research. This process is about evaluating your prospective university and course from all possible angles, which might include checking out its reputation & ranking, the quality of the course content, experience of the lecturers, the costs, whether there are internships or opportunities to study abroad and, of course, the ease of gaining employment after graduating.

Business courses are these days quite remarkable for their sheer diversity, helped by the huge extent to which business schools have collaborated with other fields of study such as IT, languages and law to create multidisciplinary or combination programmes.

Many students assume that the course content is the same for a particular course at all universities. For

Our mum asked us to talk to EduSpiral as we did not know what to study. EduSpiral had helped our older sister before. He met us at Taylor’s, talked to us and then gave us a tour.
Gan twins, Foundation in Arts at Taylor’s University

example, Accounting or Business Administration. Students need to look past the titles and dig down into the course content to find out exactly what it’s all about. Students need to have a really good understanding of the content, the teaching methodology, the learning environment that encompasses that degree programme.

Business is a hugely diverse profession and, while some will choose a course because they want to work as an accountant, others might have a wish to set up their own music or food business and use the business degree as a way to take control of their destiny. Therefore, you have to understand yourself and what your career goals are. Then, you will be able to choose the right business course that best suits you.

Restaurants, law firms, media companies, agricultural producers, schools and colleges, engineering firms, hospitals, shops and retail, scientific researchers and labs: all of them need people to manage, balance the books, market their work and develop the firm. An accounting graduate will keep track of the profit and loss for the company while a management graduate will manage the whole company. Marketing graduates will try to increase sales for the company, a human resource management graduate will keep track of the employees’ benefits, salary, contracts and general welfare.

Finding the right course can seem daunting, with so many choices on offer at the private universities in

After chatting with EduSpiral on WhatsApp, he met me & my family to take us around the campus & provide further advise on the course.
Zijun, Actuarial Science at Asia Pacific University

Malaysia and some with combinations such as business with law, business with psychology, banking & finance, finance & investment,  etc.

You can get a sense of the range of courses on offer by browsing through the subjects of the business courses offered by the universities in Malaysia. Of course, words on a page cannot give you a sense of what the university might be like and whether it is a place you would want to study in. Therefore, it is a good idea to organise a visit to the open day if you can.

Pay attention to whether or not there is an internship element on the business course as this will be particularly useful if your dream is to set up your own business. A good business course should also give you some sense of how to be a self-starter and how you might begin building your own company.

Your degree is one of the most important factors in determining the starting point of your career path.

EduSpiral helped me to transfer my business diploma into UCSI University. He had advised me to go for a university with an English-speaking environment so that I can improve myself.
Kwang Wei, Business graduate from UCSI University

When deciding which business degree to pursue, therefore, it is very important to take into account your current educational position and to measure the potential rewards of each type of degree against the time and monetary sacrifices you are willing to make.

Choosing a course to study after SPM, UEC, STPM, O-Levels or A-Levels is a process in finding out who you are and what you are good at. An experienced Education Advisor would be invaluable in assisting you to choose the right course.

Choosing a top private university in Malaysia to study after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, Pre-U, A-Levels or STPM takes time, it is a process in finding out which one best fits you. You need to talk to the right counselors who are knowledgeable and experienced to help you to choose the best course to study in Malaysia. Once you’ve identified your career goals and your academic strong points, and then shortlisted your universities and programmes, the next and most important step is the due diligence.

Choosing the Best Business Course to Study in Malaysia

After I finished my SPM, I felt confused about my further study. Eduspiral, was so patient to answer all my questions and took us around for a campus tour.
Hui Ying, Diploma in Accounting at Asia Pacific University

It is important to choose the right course to study – you don’t want to waste your time and money on a course you don’t want to do (or end up dropping out of). To help you decide which course is right for you, make a list of business courses that are of interest to you.

Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results to help you make a list of possible business courses for consideration. Looking at your results in SPM, UEC or O-Levels could help you to decide which course you would be good at. If you have enjoyed maths at school you can consider Actuarial Science, Finance & Investment or Accounting courses. These courses are related to calculations. If you are more into statistics then consider Marketing as one of the areas in marketing studies is Market Research. Students interested in psychology and human behaviour can go for Human Resource Management or Business with Psychology.  Talking to an experienced education advisor would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best business course that fits you.

“My friend introduced me to EduSpiral because I was confused about my next step due to my unexpected results in STPM. EduSpiral provided me with great solutions to fit my career goals.”
Kuo Qiat, Marketing degree at UCSI University

Having narrowed down to these courses, for students after SPM or O-Levels, you can go for the Foundation in Arts or Foundation in Business for 1 year before really choosing which type of business course to study for your degree.

Many students after SPM make the mistake of just listening to advise without verifying whether the information given is true or not. In addition, just because you have heard or seen a lot of advertisements by a particular university, doesn’t mean that it is the best in that course.

You should also ask yourself if you would still be interested in that subject for a further three or four years – enough to motivate yourself to work and research independently? Remember, you are going to work in this career for the next 50 years after graduation, therefore, you should have a high interest in the course.

The course that you choose should also have a job demand for you after you graduate. Choosing a course that you are passionate about without job demand and you may end up being jobless. Look for statistics and research to support whether there is a job demand for your future career in Malaysia. Here at EduSpiral Consultant Services, we do our research on the job demand for the careers in Malaysia, Salary Reports, and universities so that we can advise our students based on facts and evidence.

Education Pathway to a Business Degree Course in Malaysia

Our mum asked us to talk to EduSpiral as we did not know what to study. EduSpiral had helped our older sister before. He met us at Taylor’s, talked to us and then gave us a tour.
Gan twins, Foundation in Arts at Taylor’s University

Students after SPM or O-Levels would need to go through some sort of a Pre-University programme before entering into the business degree course in Malaysia. Therefore, you still have about 1 to 1.5 years in your Pre-University programme to really figure out what to study for your degree.

There are basically 2 pathways after SPM or O-Levels. You can either go for a Diploma course or Pre-University Course in Malaysia. “Pre” means before, therefore, “Pre-University” means the course that you take before entering into a university bachelors degree programme.

The common courses under Pre-University are STPM, A-Levels, SAM, Foundation, AUSMAT, etc.

Students after SPM or O-Levels who are not sure what to study at degree level can go for the Pre-University course in Malaysia like A-Levels, AUSMAT or Foundation and then proceed on to the degree in Malaysia.

I had so many questions to ask and being in Sitiawan made it difficult to find out about the universities. I WhatsApped Eduspiral & he helped me to find the right university. Met me & my family to take us around & also register.
Kuan Jian, Diploma in Logistics, UCSI University

Students after SPM or O-Levels with at least 5 credits including the relevant subjects may enter the Foundation in Business  or Foundation in Arts for 1 year before continuing on to the business degree programme. Students who are sure of studying in Malaysia should just go for the Foundation programme as it is faster, easier and helps to enhance your English language & communication skills.

Alternatively, students with at least 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels may enter the Diploma in Business Administration, Diploma in Accounting, Diploma in Human Resource Management, etc and then transfer their diploma credits into Year 2 of the related degree course. PTPN Loan is offered for the Diploma and Degree programmes.

Choosing the right Pre-University course that fits you would mean that you have to ask yourself which methods of assessment best suit you? Exams, coursework, practicals, group projects and presentations could all be in the mix in differing quantities. Every Pre-University course will include a % breakdown of assessment. You need to understand yourself and capabilities in order to decide which Pre-University course would best suit you.

Students who are sure of what they want to study after SPM or O-Levels can enter the Diploma

I was confused which university to choose for my studies and contacted EduSpiral. He provided facts & evidence to help me make the right choice.
Vivian Chua, Actuarial Science at UCSI University

or Foundation in Business Administration. The Diploma pathway in Malaysia for students after SPM is 2 or 2.5 years and then enter into Year 2 of the Degree programme.
The Foundation in Business will prepare you to face the rigours of an undergraduate business programme. Those who are not sure of which degree then it is best to go for the Foundation in Arts or Foundation in Science.

If you are not sure what to study, do ask a trained counselor and always make decisions based on evidence and facts. The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. You can contact us for a free career test to help you understand yourself better so that you are able to make the right decision.

Top Criteria to Consider When Choosing the Best Private University in Malaysia to Study a Business Course

Here’s a list of common criteria in choosing a top private university in Malaysia to study marketing:

Recognition & Reputation of the Courses in Malaysia

EduSpiral counselled me online and met me at KDU Penang University College to take me around the campus. It helped me a lot in making the right decision.
Archie Wong, Business degree programme at KDU Penang University College

  • Is the particular business Foundation, Diploma or Degree course popular at that university?
  • What is the reputation or ranking of the private university in Malaysia? Global ranking by QS World University Rankings or locally by MQA in the SETARA 2013
  • Are the business Foundation, Diploma or Degree courses recognised and approved by the Ministry of Education Malaysia?
  • Are the business Foundation, Diploma or Degree courses accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Audit (MQA)?
  • Are the business Diploma or Degree courses accredited and recognised by relevant professional bodies in Malaysia?
  • Awards won by the university, staff or students for the particular course of interest. The number of awards won would be a guide on how good the university is for the course.

Academic Quality of the Business Courses at the University in Malaysia

EduSpiral explained the pathway to become an actuaries & gave facts on why Heriot-Watt is the best for actuarial science. We also toured the campus and hostel.
Weng Hang, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia

  • Subjects offered in the business Foundation, Diploma or Degree (Are they relevant, up-to-date, and help you to achieve your career goals)
  • Entry requirements for the Foundation, Diploma & Degree courses at the university in Malaysia (Foreign branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements)
  • What is the Class size for the course (Small class size for personal attention)
  • Faculty contact/classes taught by full-time qualified & experienced faculty
  • Quality of lecturers. What are their qualifications? How many years of experience in teaching?
  • Ask your friends who have studied there or currently studying there for their opinion on the teaching quality, environment and facilities.
  • Type of programme (local degree, 3+0 UK or Australian degree, 4+0 American degree, degree transfer programme, etc)
  • What are the Entry Requirements for the business Foundation, Diploma & Degree courses at the university (Foreign Branch campuses in Malaysia have higher entry requirements for their courses)
  • Does the university have a strong internship or Co-Op programme?
  • Do they have enough students to start a class?
  •  How many students do they have studying that course at that university?
  •  What is the duration of the course? When are the intake dates?

Facilities at the University to Support the Business Course in Malaysia

I was confused what to study & which university. My cousin introduced me to EduSpiral who helped me to make the right choice.
Ye Lun, Actuarial Science at Asia Pacific University

  • Location of the university. Is it in the city, suburbs or country side? Some students prefer a city life while other students prefer a quieter university environment away from the city.
  • Size of the university.
  • Transportation. Is the university accessible to you? What are the public transportation available? If you drive, is there ample parking?
  • Campus resources (labs, library or resource centre, wifi, computer access, sports facilities, etc.)
  • Facilities for your course of interest. Labs, computers, software, etc.

Cost for your Business Foundation, Diploma or Degree Studies in Malaysia

My sister found EduSpiral online. I wanted a college that wasn’t expensive with great facilities and a UK degree. EduSpiral just helped us to find the right college.
Yen Yong, Business at First City University College

  • How much money do I have to pay for the course and cost of living? Ask your parents. Note that you will need to have enough to pay the tuition fees as well as your cost of living. (Costs for university studies in Malaysia would include tuition, hostel, food, transportation, entertainment, etc.)
  • What are the Financial assistance available at the university? (Scholarships, PTPN Loan, EPF withdrawal, MARA Loan, etc)
  • Is the PTPTN loan available for the course at the university?
  • How much are the tuition fees? Does it include the exam and other fees?
  • How much is on-campus accommodation?
  • How much is off-campus accommodation? (Off-campus apartments, houses, condominiums) Note that it might be cheaper to find off campus accommodation on your own with friends. Is the accommodations near eateries, banks, entertainment, public transportation, safe & secure, etc.?

Student Environment and Activities at the University

EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills.
Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University

  • What is the student culture at the university? (English-speaking environment, ambitious, serious about studies, lifestyle or party university, etc) The language spoken mostly at the college by the students may also matter if you don’t know Mandarin or BM or English. If most of the students speak Mandarin at that university then it will not help you to improve your English. Having a good command of the English language helps you to get good jobs and promotions.
  • Size of the university or college in Malaysia. Some students prefer a large campus with sports facilities and other resources while other students like small colleges with family-like environment.
  • Make up of the student body (diversity, international students, gender, etc.) Universities with a good proportion of international students will help you to improve your English language skills since you would need to communicate with them in English. In addition, you will learn about their culture, behavior and discover new ideas. These skills will be useful to you when you work overseas or in a multi-national company.
  • What are the Extra-curricular activities available? (Student organisations, clubs, sports, etc.)
  • Is the university campus is a safe area? Safety within the campus and outside.
  • Public vs. Private (STPM is tougher and choice of course & university is determined by the government)

International Business Management comprises all commercial transactions (private and governmental, sales, investments, logistics, and transportation) that take place between two or more regions, countries and nations beyond their political boundaries. Usually, private companies undertake such transactions for profit; governments undertake them for profit and for political reasons.

It refers to all those business activities which involve cross border transactions of goods, services, resources between two or more nations. Transaction of economic resources include capital, skills, people etc. for international production of physical goods and services such as finance, banking, insurance, construction etc.

A multinational enterprise (MNE) is a company that has a worldwide approach to markets and production or one with operations in more than a country. An MNE is often called multinational corporation (MNC) or transnational company (TNC). Well known MNCs include fast food companies such as McDonald’s and KFC, vehicle manufacturers such as Honda, Ford Motor Company and Toyota, consumer electronics companies like Samsung, LG and Sony, and energy companies such as ExxonMobil, Shell and BP. Most of the largest corporations operate in multiple national markets.

To obtain a job as well as succeed in the international work place, students need to have a good command of the English language, solid communication skills are very important and intercultural skills. Students after SPM or O-Levels planning to study International Business Management should consider universities with a high number of foreign students that would help them to improve their language skills as well as gain knowledge into other cultures.

Terence Wong, Business at Taylor’s University

Areas of study in International Business Management include differences in legal systems, political systems, economic policy, language, accounting standards, labor standards, living standards, environmental standards, local culture, corporate culture, foreign exchange market, tariffs, import and export regulations, trade agreements, climate, education and many more topics. Each of these factors requires significant changes in how individual business units operate from one country to the next.

The disappearing of economic boundaries is partially due to the proliferation of electronic communication, which allows instantaneous information transfer for sales, marketing, manufacturing and outsourcing. Furthermore, growing distribution networks, supply chains, and transportation hubs simplify the movement of products. The broad networks of worldwide financial institutions reduce currency issues. Thus, business professionals in Malaysia are increasingly servicing the needs of customers around the world.

Ultimately, most business professionals in Malaysia will in some way be impacted by international

Furthermore, Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s students spend second year studying at one of their partner universities in Australia providing them with invaluable global business perspectives.

Banking is a traditional career area for graduates, as is the wider financial services sector. Although many graduate entrants have a financial background there are also openings for those with degrees in other subjects: you can expect good training on a graduate programme and there may be a chance to extend your knowledge through professional exams.

The banking and finance industry plays a crucial role in promoting and sustaining the economic growth of a country. It safeguards the interests of its customers, sells its services and encourages investments. Different types of banks offer different kinds of services to different groups of customers.

  • The banking and finance industry comprises:
  • Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank)
  • commercial banks
  • finance companies
  • money and stockbroking firms
  • futures trading firms

Commercial banks provide financial advice to the public, businesses and industries, as well as the local government.

Merchant banks provide services to firms and corporations. They offer banking services and advice on takeovers, mergers, acquisitions and international trading.

Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank) does not provide banking services to the public. It functions as a

central bank and acts as an intermediary for the government and other banks. It supervises other banks and foreign exchange, looks after the government’s interests, prints and withdraws money in circulation. It also provides advice to the Ministry of Finance and other government agencies.

Banking is mainly divided into corporate banking, which provides banking services to large organisations; retail banking, which provides services to individual and smaller businesses; and investment banking. Financial services covers areas such as pensions, insurance and risk management.
Management training schemes in retail banks (the smaller, high street branches of large commercial banks) give you a chance to manage your own branch within a few years. But there are also roles for graduates with specialist skills, such as IT, as well as graduate jobs in other support functions, such as marketing and HR.
Other specialist areas, which you can train for on the job, include risk management, compliance and, particularly in the insurance sector, actuarial work.
Within this sector you can also find work with insurance companies, consultancies, specialist finance firms and businesses that built their reputation in a different sector before diversifying into offering financial services products.
Most careers in this sector will suit graduates with a feel for business, but there are many different paths: a job in a retail bank or building society would suit those with good people skills, while actuarial work needs graduates who are strong on numeracy.

One of those opportunities is the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), widely seen as Malaysia’s vehicle of growth.

The ETP is a comprehensive government initiative that aims to turn Malaysia into a high-income economy by 2020, with the goal of doubling Malaysia’s per-capita gross national income (GNI) from US$6,700 (RM23,700) in 2009 to more than US$15,000 (RM48,000) in 2020.

The ETP’s potential implications for retail banking especially are profound. As Malaysia is still largely a consumer-driven economy, it is predicted that the opportunity for growth in the retail industry is significant. Another area where the ETP will have a positive impact is investment banking.

The ETP also projects a total investment of RM1.2tril. A targeted average of RM115bil per year is expected from the private sector between 2011 and 2015.

As of July 2011, RM170bil worth of projects has been announced in Entry Point Projects, one of which is the proposed Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit programme.

The need for private sector capital will be enhanced by the courting of investment from a wider range of countries that reduces Malaysia’s exposure to the fallout in the US and Europe. China, India and the Middle East now rank as major additions to the country’s portfolio.

The response towards the ETP has been positive, and is borne out by the figures. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the first quarter of 2011 was already RM11bil, compared to RM 29.3bil for the whole of 2010.

Entry Requirements for Diploma in Accounting at Top Universities in Malaysia

What are the entry requirements for the Diploma in Accounting at the Best Universities in Malaysia?

Written by EduSpiral Consultant Services. For more information contact 01111408838

Students after SPM or O-Levels with at least 3 credits can choose to study the Diploma in Accounting at top private universities in Malaysia before continuing on to the accounting or finance degree programmes. Students should choose the right university that fits them which has a good reputation for accounting programs, excellent facilities, top lecturers and an English-speaking student environment.

Students after SPM or O-Levels interested in a career in accounting can go for the 2-year Diploma course at top private universities in Malaysia instead of an external Pre-University Course like SAM, AUSMAT or A-Levels. The Diploma courses are generally cheaper than the external Pre-University programmes and easier. If you do not plan on going overseas for your degree programme, then it is better to go for the Diploma in Accounting at a top private university in Malaysia. To enter into the Diploma in Accounting course at private universities and colleges in Malaysia, students after SPM or O-Levels would need at least 3 credits in the relevant subjects with a pass in BM and Sejarah.

It can be a bit confusing for students after SPM or O-Levels to enter into their diploma course of interest. Many students assume that the entry requirements are the same for all universities in Malaysia. Some students with 3 credits in SPM have checked with TAR University College to find out that their entry requirements is 5 credits for Diploma courses, therefore, they sign up for the 1 year 4 month Certificate Course at TAR University College without realising that the entry requirements for all the rest of the private universities & colleges in Malaysia for Diploma is only 3 SPM Credits. Students should research and check the information carefully before joining any university or college in Malaysia.

Accounting Diploma Courses Admission Requirements at Top Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia

After I finished my SPM, I felt confused about my further study. Eduspiral, was so patient to answer all my questions and took us around for a campus tour.
Hui Ying, Diploma in Accounting at Asia Pacific University

You will need at least 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels including Maths or Accounting with a pass in BM & Sejarah to join the accounting diploma course in Malaysia. Please contact us for the details.

A credit in SPM or O-Levels is A, B or C. D & E are passes.

After the 2-year diploma in accounting programme, you will then enter into Year 2 of the Accounting, Accounting & Finance, Banking & Finance, Finance & Investment or Finance degree programmes at top private universities in Malaysia for another 2 years.

To enter into the Accounting degree programme, diploma students must have at least MUET Band 2 or IELTS Band 5.5 or TOEFL 550 (A compulsory requirement from MQA)

You will need at least 3 credits in SPM and a pass in BM & Sejarah to enter into a Diploma course at most private universities and colleges in Malaysia. However, to enter TAR University College or TARUC diploma programmes, you need at least 5 relevant credits including English. Some students without a credit in English would sign up for the English course at TAR University College. Most private universities and colleges in Malaysia only require a Pass in English. That’s the only college in Malaysia that requires 5 SPM credits to enter into all of their diploma courses. Students with 3 SPM credits can only enter into the Certificate courses at TAR UC for 1 year 4 months before entering into the Diploma courses.

Transferring your Diploma in Accounting to a Degree Course in Malaysia

EduSpiral emphasised the importance of having good English for our future career. I am glad to join a globalised university which has helped me to improve my communication skills.
Vincent Yeoh, Accounting & Finance at Asia Pacific University

Upon completion of the Diploma in Accounting, students can consider transferring into top accounting and finance degree programmes at the best private universities in Malaysia.

If you had taken a diploma course, you can transfer your credits into Year 2 of a relevant degree. Taking the Diploma in Information Technology, you can generally be accepted into Year 2 of the Accounting, Accounting & Finance, Finance & Investment, Banking & Finance, Actuarial & Finance, Financial Economics and other related degree programmes. At some universities, you may not get full exemptions as the subjects may not be similar, so you may have to enter into Year 1 second or final semester.

If you are continuing on to the degree programme at the same university after your diploma, there is no need to do an exemption as it will be automatic.

To perform the exemption exercise to transfer to another university for the degree, you will need to submit the following documents to the university of interest for exemption evaluation:

  • Transcripts for the subjects taken
  • Course outline for all subjects taken
  • Letter of Completion or Diploma Certificate
  • Copy of SPM certificate

It will take some time to perform the exemptions so you need to submit the documents early.

Upon completion of the accounting degree programmes, graduates will have 9 paper exemptions from the total of 14 ACCA papers. I would recommend students who are weak in the English language to go for the accounting degree course first and then only pursue the ACCA. The ACCA is exam-based and marked in the UK.

So, Which is the Best College or University in Malaysia to study the Diploma in Accounting Course?

EduSpiral met up with me many times to explain the course to me, took me to visit the campus, & even arranged the Head of Department to clear my doubts.
Fung (Right), Accounting at Asia Pacific University

In order to succeed in the competitive field of accounting, students must choose the best universities in Malaysia to study. Students should choose the right university that fits them which has a good reputation for business programs, excellent facilities, top lecturers and an English-speaking student environment. Good English is important to obtain higher salaries and faster promotions in Malaysia. English-speaking environments promote critical thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills which enhance your career prospects.

EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked in the education industry for more than 15 years counseling thousands of students. We represent many reputable and top universities in Malaysia. Every student is different, therefore, we have to talk to each person and treat them like an individual to find out which university is the best that would suit their personality, financial and career goals.

Choosing a university is important as it will help to shape your mind, character and help you to develop the necessary skills for a successful career. Therefore, not all private universities are the same. You should not choose a university because it is the cheapest, easiest and nearest. It should be based on which university that best fits your needs.

Many students in Malaysia also make the common mistake in choosing a university because their friends

EduSpiral provided me with in-depth advise on choosing the right course for my career.
Terence Wong, Business at Taylor’s University

are going there. I even had one student tell me that his choice of university depends on where his girlfriend is going! This is one of the most important decisions that may change your life forever hence it should not be taken lightly.

At EduSpiral Consultant Services, I have worked in the private higher education industry in Malaysia for more than 15 years advising students with facts and evidence on how to choose the right course after SPM. You should carefully think about what are the options available to you. To choose the best course that fits you, students may fill up our EduSpiral Career Assessment form for evaluation.

The EduSpiral Career Assessment form is a simple form designed by us that gathers information from students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM or A-Levels in order to assess their aptitude helping us to determine the most suitable course and career progression. After knowing which course, we can then determine which private university in best for that course.

Banking & Financial Services Job Market Insights and Salary in Malaysia Q2 2017 Report by Ambition.com.my

by Bong Siew Yong

Throughout the first quarter of 2017, talent demand for Banking & Financial Services continued to see an increasing trend.

Banks active on migration of functions

EduSpiral helped me to find the right college for A-Levels, & now they have helped me to choose what to study after my A-Levels.
Chee Kin, Actuarial & Finance degree at UCSI University

In Q1 2017, we continued to see the trend of global banks migrating and building functions in Kuala Lumpur. This phenomenon has been creating and developing exciting career opportunities for professionals in Banking & Financial Services. However, as most of these functions are still considered new to Malaysia, we saw a short supply of local talents in meeting this demand. Banks continued to be focused on attracting expat expertise who could build and develop talented, sustainable teams with the pool of local and returning Malaysian professionals.

Core growth areas continued to be across Investment Banking, Wealth, Risk and AML / Compliance operations, as organisations looked to keep up with global regulatory standards. We saw an accompanying talent demand for Banking & Financial Services professionals who could support growth in these areas.

We also observed a trend, albeit very much expected, of the fundamental need for strong Business Change teams, Process Engineers, Business Analysts, and Project Managers. This trend has been evolving with the continued migration of regional and global processes to Malaysia, particularly to the country’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Attitude matters where talent is scarce

Given the ongoing maturity of Kuala Lumpur as a regional and global hub, with its melting pot of talent comprising a broad range of technical skills and knowledge, we have been seeing businesses unanimously seeking for professionals with global exposure, thought leadership, stakeholder management and excellent communication skills. The search for such talent continued to pose challenges in meeting emerging market needs for excellent regional and global teams in the country’s capital. Consequently, we saw a trend where organisations were hiring on attitude and through upskilling of technical knowledge within the available talent pool.

Optimistic talent outlook for the months ahead

As we go through Q2 2017, we expect to see similar hiring trends for Banking & Financial Services that we saw in the first quarter, as this market continues to mature in Malaysia. Exceptional talent will be sought after towards building sustainable teams within banks and financial services firms.

Prospects for technology recruitment in 2017 are very positive as employers are driven by Malaysia’s blend of price point and quality in this sector, according to Ambition’s quarterly market insights report for Q4 2016.

The report also found that Malaysia’s banking and financial services market has continued to established itself as a mainstay global service centre hub, for middle and back office functions for some of the world’s largest organisations.

The report covers salary and job outlook data across four sectors:

  1. Technology
  2. Banking and financial services
  3. Finance and accounting
  4. Digital

Malaysia’s Technology Salary and Job Outlook 2017

Prospects are bright as employers are driven by Malaysia’s blend of price point and quality. There is an uptake in the creation of centres of excellence, resulting in increased demand for specialist talent further up the value chain.

Malaysia is currently less competitive on cost point alone compared to other typical offshore centres, such

as Chennai and Manila. However, if you factor in the quality, seniority and specialist nature of IT professional that can be hired here, Malaysia is now moving towards being a cost-effective alternative to Singapore and Hong Kong, a move away from the typical offshore BPO model.

Moving into Q1 2017, significant growth is expected across the following sectors:

  • Infrastructure services such as networks, platforms and specialist areas such as cloud and virtualisation;
  • Salaries of IT directors with more than 10 years of experience pegged at RM250k-360k per annum;
  • ERP, EAI and other specialist off-the-peg solutions from large vendors such as SAP, Oracle and Salesforce;
  • Solutions architect for application development can take home in the range of RM180k-250k per month.
  • Business transformation, an increasingly dominant area of IT, leading to demand for professionals in project management, program management, PMO and change management.

Malaysia’s Banking and financial services salary and job outlook 2017

Drawing from lessons learnt in previous years, a number of banks are becoming more strategically aligned on locally available talent, and are continuing to grow largely across investment banking, wealth, risk and AML / compliance operations.

That said, 2016 saw smaller pockets of niche capital market and AML analysis or optimisation operational skillsets, with Kuala Lumpur attracting both expat talent and returning Malaysians given the instability and changes to many mainstay frontline markets.

The following is the sectoral outlook:

  • With a number of the global banks continuing to migrate functions to Kuala Lumpur, there is a need for business change teams, process engineers, business analysts, and project managers;
  • Regional finance controllers can earn in the range of RM220k-280k per annum this year;
  • As  a number of projects are being undertaken based in China / Hong Kong, there is an increased need for language fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese;
  • Head of tax roles are in demand with anticipated yearly salary at RM250k-300k;
  • There is a return in demand for audit, risk and compliance talent, particularly those focused on AML and FCC operations, as global markets have become more heavily regulated.

Banking and financial services salaries for 2017

Malaysia’s Finance and accounting salary and job outlook 2017

  • In the months ahead, shared services hubs are expected to focus on volume hiring, leading to an upward trajectory in demand for experienced accounting and risk professionals.
  • Experienced CFOs (15+ years) can pocket in the range of RM 360k-540k annually.
  • The market favours job seekers, with demand for change management as well as migration professionals, especially those with project management and Lean Six Sigma qualifications.
  • Demand is also high for audit heads, who can anticipate per annum salary of 250k-300k.
  • By centralising global or regional functions in a shared services hub, there is demand for those experienced in financial analysis, financial planning and analysis, taxation, and compliance.

Finance and accounting salaries in 2017

Malaysia’s Digital salary and job outlook 2017

  • With 675 million smartphones in service in Asia today, demand for iOS, Android and Full Stack mobile developers to be at a peak towards the end of 2017.
  • CIO/CTO titles are taking home RM360k-600k per annum, while engineering heads or vice president titles fall in a similar RM300k-600k range.
  • With investments in big data, mobilisation and content marketing on social media platforms, there is demand for influencer marketers, data scientists, and social media experts.
  • Despite Malaysia being an excellent talent base, some challenges are foreseen in terms of its local talent pool’s ability to meet digital expertise demand.

Digital salaries for 2017

Paul Endacott, regional MD of Asia at Ambition, commented on the necessity for businesses to go digital. “This is more so in Malaysia where there are emerging centres of excellence, resulting in increased demand for digital and technology services through investment and development whilst the country’s capital is seen as a logistically viable, cost-effective and business-friendly regional business hub.”

However, he pointed out that this will cause a talent shortage despite the increase in expatriates and returning Malaysians.

“Organisations are encouraged to hire based on trainable potential and transferable qualities such as problem-solving or general coding ability, failing which these organisations will likely face a standstill and a faltering process of knowledge transfer to fuel talent growth.”
