The suite is a purpose-built centre that enables medical students at Taylor’s University to improve their basic clinical skills and practice history taking, physical examination and bedside procedure that help to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients in a safe, supervised, and stress-free environment. It has standardised patients and computerised human models (mannequins) capable of simulating diseases.
Anatomy and Pathology Museum
The museum features various anatomy teaching collections that are arranged according to the human body. It also exhibits gross pathological specimens that are crucial for orienting students to surgical pathology and helping them to correlate what they learn in lectures to a hands-on approach with real anatomy specimens.
Library Resources
Taylor’s University library houses a collection of more than 20,000 volumes and journals on science, mathematics, technology, medicine, biomedicine and health. Students will gain access to media resources that contain over 3,000 medical books and online journals, as well as an exclusive collection of database and platforms for self-assessment.

CLINICAL ELECTIVE MODULE

Experience hands-on patient care in different countries via Taylor’s Clinical Elective Module. Students will have the opportunity to be mentored overseas by international medical specialists at hospitals of their choice. This allow students to adapt to different situations, broadening their medical knowledge and skills to be applied when they become doctors.

PATIENT-CENTRIC CURRICULUM

Doctors with a Heart for Healing
While the healthcare industry and medical profession become increasingly profit-driven, we aspire to produce future doctors who are well-rounded with good professional values and the heart for patient care.

Professional values and ethical practice are woven into the very heart of our learning at SOM, and strengthened through early clinical exposure and clinical training. The School organises regular outreach field trips and public health activities for urban and rural communities, in order to instil compassion, social awareness and volunteerism in our future doctors.

Unique to studying medicine in Malaysia, our students are exposed to patients from different backgrounds, demographics, cultures and environments, giving them a better understanding of the community’s health and medical needs from the onset. During these practical sessions, students can interact with real patients, have first hand experience in diagnosing illnesses and prescribe medication.

HOLISTIC TEACHING PRACTICE

Grooming Reflective Medical Practitioners
Taylor’s School of Medicine adopts a hybrid curriculum, which encapsulates both the traditional and integrated problem-based approach into its teaching and learning activities. The hybrid curriculum ensures that our medical students are able to apply their extensive body of knowledge into professional practice, enabling them to enhance the wellbeing of their patients and community.
Through lectures, problem-based learning (PBL), practical classes, independent learning, clinical skills sessions and clinical training, students are equipped with research-oriented thinking, critical thinking and professional conduct. They are also taught how to gather and interpret medical information from various sources and successfully apply them.

The Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC), which is woven through the School’s curriculum, encourages selfdirected learning. Seminars and PBL sessions equip students with lifelong learning skills and digital literacy, while interpersonal and intrapersonal skills are instilled through hands-on involvement in campaigns, events as well as community service activities.
From the onset, the School establishes a patient-based learning model. Classroom learning is injected with teaching exercises, and students are assessed based on how they interact with patients in addition to how they diagnose illnesses and prescribe medication.

First-year students are given the opportunity to examine patients on campus (simulated patients) or at hospitals, educating them on the basics of patient’s history taking and physical examination. This early clinical exposure establishes the relevance of medical sciences to its clinical application and forms the basis of student’s medical education.

We also encourage our students to explore their passion in the field of medical sciences through the Student Selected Module (SSM). Under the SSM, students have the opportunity to explore specialised areas that are of interest to them, completing one basic and one extensive research project on any topic of their choice.

There are only about 3000 nurses graduating yearly down from 10,000 previously. Because of the low number of nursing candidates, by 2018, with more new hospitals expected in Malaysia there will be a severe shortage of nurses. Compounding the problem is affluent Singapore, which is actively recruiting nurses from Malaysia. To work in Singapore, students must be able to communicate well in English.

The demand for nurses is very high — 130,000 qualified nurses by 2020. The data provided in the Malaysian Human Resources for Health Country Profiles for 2014 for the number of nurses in the country showed 64,348 in the public sector and 28,333 in the private sector, totalling 92,681 nurses. Though the ratio of nurses to population has increased tremendously, it is still considered low than in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. Malaysia is lacking oncology, critical care and paediatric nurses.

Students after SPM or O-Levels interested in a career in Nursing in Malaysia can go for the Foundation in Science or into the Diploma in Nursing before continuing on to the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme. The Foundation in Science is a 1-year programme before entering into the 4-year Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) programme. Upon successful completion of the programme, students are eligible to sit for the Malaysian Nursing Board Examination to be licensed to practise as a Registered Nurse.

Job Nature of Registered Nurses in Malaysia

The Nursing Programmes at UCSI University are accredited by MQA and the Malaysian Nursing Board

The Nursing Programmes at UCSI University are accredited by MQA and the Malaysian Nursing Board

Registered nurses (RNs) in Malaysia, regardless of specialty or work setting, treat patients, educate patients and the public about various medical conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients’ family members.

RNs record patients’ medical histories and symptoms, help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operate medical machinery, administer treatment and medications, and help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation. RNs teach patients and their families how to manage their illness or injury, explaining post-treatment home care needs; diet, nutrition, and exercise programs; and self-administration of medication and physical therapy.

Some RNs in Malaysia work to promote general health by educating the public on warning signs and symptoms of disease. RNs also might run general health screening or immunization clinics, blood drives, and public seminars on various conditions.

When caring for patients, RNs establish a plan of care or contribute to an existing plan. Plans may include

numerous activities, such as administering medication, including careful checking of dosages and avoiding interactions; starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; observing the patient and recording those observations; and consulting with physicians and other health care clinicians.

Some RNs provide direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aids regarding patient care. RNs with advanced educational preparation and training may perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and may have prescriptive authority.

Registered Nurses Can Specialise in Malaysia

Nursing Unit at UCSI University

RNs can specialize in one or more areas of patient care in Malaysia. There generally are four ways to specialize. RNs can choose a particular work setting or type of treatment, such as perioperative nurses, who work in operating rooms and assist surgeons. RNs also may choose to specialize in specific health conditions, as do diabetes management nurses, who assist patients to manage diabetes.

Other RNs specialize in working with one or more organs or body system types, such as dermatology nurses, who work with patients who have skin disorders. RNs also can choose to work with a well-defined population, such as geriatric nurses, who work with the elderly.

Some RNs may combine specialties. For example, pediatric oncology nurses deal with children and adolescents who have cancer. There are many options for RNs who specialize in a work setting or type of treatment. Critical care nurses provide care to patients with serious, complex, and acute illnesses or injuries that require very close monitoring and extensive medication protocols and therapies. Critical care nurses often work in critical or intensive care hospital units.

Emergency, or trauma, nurses work in hospital or stand-alone emergency departments, providing initial

assessments and care for patients with life-threatening conditions.  Medical-surgical nurses provide health promotion and basic medical care to patients with various medical and surgical diagnoses. Occupational health nurses seek to prevent job-related injuries and illnesses, provide monitoring and emergency care services, and help employers implement health and safety standards.

Perianesthesia nurses provide preoperative and postoperative care to patients undergoing anesthesia during surgery or other procedure. Perioperative nurses assist surgeons by selecting and handling instruments, controlling bleeding, and suturing incisions. Some of these nurses also can specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Psychiatric-mental health nurses treat patients with personality and mood disorders. Radiology nurses provide care to patients undergoing diagnostic radiation procedures such as ultrasounds, magnetic resonance imaging, and radiation therapy for oncology diagnoses. Rehabilitation nurses care for patients with temporary and permanent disabilities. Transplant nurses care for both transplant recipients and living donors and monitor signs of organ rejection.

The most common specialty areas for nurse practitioners are family practice, adult practice, women’s health, pediatrics, acute care, and geriatrics. However, there are a variety of other specialties that nurse practitioners can choose, including neonatology and mental health.

Nurse administrators supervise nursing staff in hospitals in Malaysia, establish work schedules and budgets, maintain medical supply inventories, and manage resources to ensure high-quality care.

According to a recent article reported in the Borneo Post, the Malaysian government has identified the Medical Health services

sector as an important key to Malaysia’s growth. This is good news for students who desire to venture into the medical health field as there will be more jobs created by the government once they graduate.

Students in Malaysia can consider studying courses like Nursing, Medical Lab Technology, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Optometry, Dentistry, or Medicine.

Increased Demand for Health Science Graduates in Malaysia

Job Demand for Health Science Graduates in Malaysia Under its Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), unveiled in September 2010, the government aims to transform the country into a high-income economy bracket by 2020, with the health sector targeted as central to this plan.

As one of the 12 national key economic areas (NKEAs), health care is targeted to become a significant economic enabler by generating revenue through health tourism, as well as manufacturing drugs and equipment. The sector also aims to create 180,000 new positions in health care and attract up to one million overseas health tourists annually by the beginning of the next decade.

With total healthcare expenditure representing 4.8% of GDP, the ETP aims to grow three sub-sectors within the healthcare

industry; namely the pharmaceutical, health travel and medical technology products segment. Quick-wins include to mandate health insurance for foreign workers and to create an eco-system to support clinical trials. In addition, the Healthcare NKEA intends to develop and pursue exports in generic drugs and reinvigorating our health travel segment with an investment of RM 23.2 billion within 10 years. To achieve that goal, however, spending in the sector will need a significant boost.

Currently, Malaysia dedicates the equivalent of 4.7 per cent gross domestic product (GDP) on health services. This is lower than most middle-income nations’ spend, which averages 6.5 per cent, according to the World Health Organisation. One of the core areas for that increased investment is human capital. The Health Ministry has set a series of targets to increase the ratios of health sciences professionals to the general public.

Once the ETP has completed its term by 2020, officials believe Malaysia will have one doctor for every 400 citizens, compared with the present rate of around 1:800, and one nurse for every 200 people, up from the current level of 1:384. To achieve this, Malaysia is boosting its health education training schemes.

Muhyiddin Yassin, the Deputy Prime Minister, said the government was planning to increase the number of higher education institutions in the field of health science to 150,000 by 2020, up from the present 55,000. According to Muhyiddin, who is also Malaysia’s Education Minister, “I believe Malaysia can play a central role in answering the need for more health professionals in the region. As such, health sciences students, who are considered highly skilled and employable, can expect a brighter future in this field.”

in Malaysia and 1,834 community pharmacies throughout the country.. The Pharmacist to people ratio is set to turn from 1:2,947 this year to 1:2,000 by 2016.

More community pharmacies will be set up in rural areas. The Health Ministry is looking into a zoning system to distribute pharmacies accordingly in urban and rural areas so that the public would not be deprived of such medical service.

Presently, the concentration of community pharmacies is in Selangor where there are 433 pharmacies. Penang has 213, Kuala Lumpur has 201 and Johor has 157 community pharmacies.

Affordable Top Nursing Diploma Course in Malaysia at Nilai University

First Rate Diploma in Nursing at the Top Ranked Nilai University in Malaysia

Written by EduSpiral Consultant Services. For more information contact 01111408838

Malaysia is lacking oncology, critical care and paediatric nurses.

medical doctors to meet the needs of the healthcare system of the country.

This goal is achieved with highly qualified staff, fully-equipped laboratories as well as other essential facilities. With learning as its training thrust, active student participation is the standard expectation.

The homegrown Medical progamme at UCSI University has graduated its first batch of students already and is accredited by MQA, recognised by the Malaysian Medical Council and World Health Organisation.

Problem Based Learning (PBL) was introduced at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, UCSI University, since the inception of medical programme in 2005.

Many students dream of becoming doctors but are unable to achieve it because of the high cost involved for the medical program. With more than 28 years of experience, UCSI University provides a high quality and affordable medical program at about RM300,000 total for 5 years.

It is cheaper compared to other medical programmes in Malaysia and is value for money because the medical programme at UCSI University is recognised by WHO and accredited by MMC.

campus in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur and years three to five at the clinical training at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu.

This is advantageous to the UCSI Medical Students because the doctor to medical student ratio is low and the medical student to patient ratio is high for the clinical rotations.

Therefore, medical students get personal attention from the attending doctors to learn a lot as well as put into practice their knowledge and skills to the many patients assigned to them.

Clinical training give students experiences in all parts of the hospital setting, including the operating room, emergency department, and various other departments that allow learning by viewing and doing.

During this training, students are required to rotate through different medical specialties and treat patients under the supervision of physicians. Students elicit patient histories, complete physical examinations, write progress notes, and assist in surgeries and medical procedures.

(HKL) consultant physician Datuk Dr S. Jeyaindran said that a houseman would normally look after four patients now — down from 10 five years ago.

“The concern is that these interns are seeing fewer patients and hence, have fewer opportunities to carry out adequate procedures.

“In some hospitals, there are more housemen than patients,” said Dr Jeyaindran, who is also the head of medicine at the Health Ministry.

Being the only university sending medical students for clinical training at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital, UCSI students get more attention from the attending physicians and access to more patients.

Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital is equipped with RM5.7mil worth of multislice computerised tomography equipment.

The neurosurgery unit of Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ), which was established in April 2011, has conducted 1,343 brain and spinal cord operations as at December 2013. HSNZ has successfully become the referral centre for various cases of brain and spinal cord injuries previously handled by Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian.

The Faculty recognises that the philosophy of using problems is the most effective learning approach suited to medicine, and is used to enhance the learning in Basic Medical Sciences.

iii. Integrated Learning
Both Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences are integrated throughout the academic training with early clinical exposure in the form of hospital visits to enhance the learning of Basic Sciences and to facilitate student transition to a comprehensive hospital & Community-based learning that enables students to develop their interviewing, communication and physical examination skills. Arranged in Year 2 of the programme, these visits enable students to put their training into practice, as well as to facilitate their transition into the clinical environment in Year 3.
