“I did not get the results as expected in my A-Levels. EduSpiral helped me to find the right course to fit my needs.”
Foo Hong, American Degree Program at HELP College of Arts & Technology

In the first 2 years, students will take general subjects before going into more specific subjects related to their degree of choice when they go to the USA. Depending on what major you take, the college will advise you on which subjects to take that are transferable to the universities. A major is the degree of choice like engineering, IT, business, actuarial science, aerospace engineering, accounting, etc.

At year 1, students need to choose the major so that you take the right subjects. During Year 2, students should identify the universities of choice to apply to in the USA. Normally, it is advised to apply to at least 3 universities just in case one application gets rejected

The American undergraduate degree provides an education that emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making skills. American education provides a flexible, holistic and well-rounded approach to education. It produces graduates with strong critical and analytical thinking skills with the ability to put knowledge into action.

  • It is a 4-year degree program after SPM or O-Levels
  • Students gain direct entry to university level after high school.
  • The curriculum is broad based and flexible.
  • Students are allowed to switch major if they decided to do so even after 2 years of studies.
  • Students are required to take courses outside of their major (commonly known as the liberal arts education philosophy).
  • Continuous learning and testing system (70% coursework, 30% final examination) where students are involved in projects, teamwork, presentation, extra- and co-curricular activities.
  • The education is learning-driven instead of exam-driven. Students are groomed to be all rounded team players with strong critical thinking and communication skills.

American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) at Taylor’s University

Identifying the university that you want to go to can be challenging as there are thousands of universities in the USA. Taylor’s University,  KDU College and HELP University has an extensive list of partner universities where the subjects have been approved for transfer into their university.

ADP students are advised to narrow down their university choices by region, size of university, cost of living and fees, programme offered, and number of subjects accepted for transfer.

State universities in the USA

State universities are founded and subsidised by the US government. Tuition is lower than private universities, and in-state residents (those from that state) pay significantly lower than out-of-state residents. Total enrolment is usually over 20,000

HELP University, a premier university renown for quality education has achieved Very Good or Tier 4 ranking in the SETARA 2011

students. International students are classified as out-of-state residents and may have to fulfill higher admission requirements than in-state students.

Private Universities in the USA

Private institutions are funded by endowments, tuition fees, grants and alumni donations. Tuition fees tend to be higher than at state universities and no distinction is made between in-state or out-of-state residents. These institutions tend to have a smaller enrolment than state universities. Religious-affiliated institutions, which are numerous in the US, are private.

It is cheaper to study in the Midwest than to study in the East Coast or West Coast of the USA.

Tuition Fee Per Year RM Cost of Living RM
USA US$15,000-US$25,000 RM48,000-RM80,000 US$10,700-US$16,000 RM34,240-51,200

Academic Calendar in the USA

The university year usually starts in September (Fall) and ends in May. It is often divided into two semesters as well as a shorter, more intensive summer term. The summer term allows students spread out their course load over the year, or complete their undergraduate degree in less time. Students can also join the January intake which is called the Spring semester.

to the American system of education.

The American education system allows students to gain knowledge, which goes beyond their field of study. Students are exposed to a broad range of academic subjects outside of their core discipline. For example, engineering students take courses in the social sciences and humanities while business students take courses in the sciences. This develops well-rounded graduates who are able to collaborate effectively with professionals outside their own fields of expertise.

Dedicated Support and Guidance
Each student is assigned an Academic Advisor, who is expert in their field to advise and guide students on coursework selection, career choices, and industry updates in accordance to the student’s major and academic performance.

There are also Guidance Counselors who are all US graduates that are available for consultation on placement (university applications), career options, and professional examinations/licensure (e.g. Registered Dietician, Society of Actuaries, Certified Financial Analyst, etc).

Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS)

Great Student Experience in the American Degree Program (ADP) at Taylor’s University

ADP students are required to actively participate in hands-on project work and course assessments, get involved in extra-curricular activities, as well as engage with their lecturers and classmates in the classroom.

Most of the courses in the ADP challenge students to apply their classroom learning and research into practice, through various projects and activities inside and outside of the classroom.

Clubs and Societies
Students have the option of forming their own clubs or societies, as evident in the many clubs and societies that have been initiated by ADP students over the years.

The activities our students have involved in include organizing inter-school competitions, knowledge-building workshops, team-based games and many others. Many of our students have also made a positive impact in the community by initiating and engaging several charitable and social initiatives.

Through participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, ADP students are able to hone their leadership skills, communication and social skills, teamwork, and time management abilities, among others. These core capabilities go a long way in creating well-rounded, globally conscious citizens of the future.

What is an American Degree Program (ADP)?

HELP University American Degree Programme

HELP CAT American Degree Program students

The American education system is different from the British and Australian education system. After SPM, a student will go into the Foundation (1 year) and then into a 3-year degree or 4 years for engineering.

In the American education system, after SPM, a student will go directly into the degree for 4 years. Students can go for the 4+0 American Degree Program at HELP College of Arts & Technology where you can apply for the PTPN Loan for all 4 years of studies completed all in Malaysia.

Basically an American education is more holistic or provides you with general knowledge and then as the years go by would become more specific to your degree major. The British education system is more specific where you will study the subjects directly related to your degree of choice immediately. It depends on what type of personality and your career goals are in order to choose the right system to fit you.

American Education System

SPM (5 credits) – Freshman (Year 1 degree) – Sophomore (Year 2) – Junior (Year 3) – Senior (Year 4)

British education system

A List of Top Courses offered by the Best Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia

EduSpiral took us around to tour the campus and the hostel giving me & my family the assurance that we are making the right choice.
Jerry Cheong, Diploma in ICT at Asia Pacific University

Most great things begin with a plan. Your future career and studies should be no different. A plan will give you something to work towards. It’ll also help you make the most of the opportunities that come your way. With so many private universities in Malaysia, it can be confusing to choose the right one that fits you.

A lot of the universities and colleges advertise frequently making many claims, and even after attending the education fairs, that can leave you more confused after listening to their counselors. There are also many agents and online education websites claiming that they can help you but you need to be careful as most of them are inexperienced and tend to push you to certain universities only.

Choosing the best university in Malaysia to study at will take time and effort. You should carefully think about what are the options available to you, look at your results, interests and budget. If you are not sure where to study, do ask a knowledgeable and experienced counselor and always make decisions based on evidence and facts. The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. Based on my vast experience in the education industry, I have made up a list of top private universities and colleges in Malaysia and the areas of studies that they are good at.

Top Private Universities & Colleges in Malaysia Offering the Best External Pre-University (Pre-U) Programmes

“EduSpiral gave me advise over phone, Facebook, Skype and even took me to visit the universities. He spent a lot of time to help me make my decision on what to study and at which university.”
Ban Moon (Left), Scored 3As in the A-Levels at HELP Academy

All students after SPM have to take a Pre-University course before entering university such as A-Levels, STPM, South Australian Matriculation, Foundation, Canadian Pre-University, etc.

It can be confusing when choosing the right Pre-University course. When choosing a Pre-U course, you should understand yourself whether you want an exam-based course or a Pre-U course that contains a mix of coursework and exams.

You should also choose the Pre-University Programme based on what you would like to study for your degree, your budget, which country, and recognition.

Below is a list of some of the best universities and colleges in Malaysia offering the Pre-University Programmes.

Choosing a course to study after SPM is not a science, it is a process

Students in Malaysia need to talk to the right education counselors so that you get the right information to help you in making this life-changing decision.

Ask the right Education Counselors in Malaysia to help you. Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car? Or would you ask a mechanic for medical advise? Although this sounds ridiculous, but many students do listen to advise from young and inexperienced counselors from universities, colleges or agents’ offices.  Talking to an experienced education advisor in Malaysia would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.

Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results

to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration. EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.

EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.

At EduSpiral Consultant Services, I have worked in the private higher education industry in Malaysia for more than 15 years advising students with facts and evidence on how to choose the right course after SPM. You should carefully think about what are the options available to you. To choose the best course that fits you, students may fill up our EduSpiral Career Assessment form for evaluation.

The EduSpiral Career Assessment form is a simple form designed by us that gathers information from students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM or A-Levels in order to assess their aptitude helping us to determine the most suitable course and career progression.

The best private universities and colleges in Malaysia have excellent facilities, years of experience running the programme, strong student support services, internships and experienced lecturers.

They are also accredited by MQA and approved by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Accreditation by the various professional bodies such as the Board of Engineers Malaysia, Pharmacy Board, Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, etc also indicates the standard achieved.

The best private university in Malaysia will focus on quality, have award winners for the particular courses, years of experience offering the particular course, highly experienced lecturers, a good study environment (not a party university), internships, good mix of international & local students, extra-curricular activities and good facilities. The SETARA ranking is a guide for students to assess the quality of a private university in Malaysia.

When choosing a university and college in Malaysia, it is important for students to visit the campus and see the facilities and feel the culture of the students to see if it fits you.

Talk to the lecturers and find out from the counselors there about the courses and check if the courses have been accredited by MQA and other external bodies like the Pharmacy Board, Nursing Board, Malaysian Medical Council, Board of Engineers Malaysia , Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia or Persatuan Arkitek Malaysia.

English and communication skills. If you are weak in English and choose a cheap university where the students speak mainly in Mandarin, it will be difficult for you to improve your English.

Star newspaper has reported that graduates with good English earn 25% higher salary and get faster promotion. The Ministry of Education reported that there were more than 70,000 public university jobless graduates and one of the main reasons was poor command of the English language.

Would you rather suffer for 4 years and get a high salary for 60 years of your work life or an easy 4 years and low salary for 60 years? The decisions that you make now, can change your life forever. Remember the best university doesn’t mean it is the best university for you. The best university is one that fits your career goals, your personality and can push you to a higher level of success.

Below are a list of the best private colleges and universities in Malaysia in their various fields, in my opinion.
