All UCSI University students will have to carry out a final Research Project at the end of their third academic year in these laboratories under the supervision of our highly qualified academic staff.

Their Biotechnology programme is a homegrown B.Sc. degree and is tailored to incorporate Co-Op training in year 1, 2 and 3 of study. UCSI students have the opportunity of working for two months at the end of each of the three academic years on their Co-Operative Placements in a company in the related industries.

This means they would have more than six months of real world working experience before they graduate. The Co-Op aims to develop not only students’ communications and soft skills, but also help students to relate theory with practical and working experience in the Biotechnology industry in Malaysia.

The specially designed and purpose-built laboratories at UCSI university include Basic Chemistry and Biology laboratory, Microbiology laboratory, Physiology and Pharmacology laboratory, Molecular Biology laboratory, Enzyme Technology laboratory, Fermentation and scale-up laboratory, and Animal and Plant Cell Culture Laboratory.

Their Biotechnology programme is a homegrown B.Sc. degree and is tailored to incorporate Co-Op training in year 1, 2 and 3 of study. UCSI students have the opportunity of working for two months at the end of each of the three academic years on their Co-Operative Placements in a company in the related industries.

This means they would have more than six months of real world working experience before they graduate. UCSI University Wins 4 Awards at 25th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar


UCSI University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences students sweep four out of six awards

It was a combination of academic excellence, presentation skill, and confidence that saw UCSI University’s Faculty of Applied

Sciences students sweep four out of six awards at the 25th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Joko Logis and Lim Wan Chi, won two of the Best Presentation awards for the oral category while Timmy Richardo and Wong Sok Yee snagged the Best Poster Awards in the poster category. Wong is currently pursuing her degree in food science and nutrition while the others are biotechnology students.

All four students acknowledged that the academic staff played an important role in nurturing and supporting them to achieve their full potential.

For the oral category, participants were judged on the presentation of their entries as well as their competency during the question and answer session.

Logis’s entry explored the quorum sensing inhibitory properties of manuka propolis on bacteria Vibrio fischeri. He explained that his research focused on the ability of manuka propolis – a resinous component of bee hives – to disrupt the chemical communication system in disease-causing bacteria.

“Basically by inhibiting quorum sensing in these bacteria, we could reduce their ability to cause disease,” he said, adding that

this could be an alternative approach to antibiotics.

Lim and Logis revealed that the experience of sharing their final year projects with their peers and experts from other universities was a unique way to gain insight on how their projects could be further improved.

Matching their success in the poster category were Timmy Richardo and Wong Sok Yee.

Pointing out that he never expected to win, Richardo credited his supervisor and the Faculty of Applied Sciences for the firm support and guidance he received when preparing his poster.

His poster illustrated the production of synthetically modified peanut allergens to make it soluble. A soluble allergen is easier to be used as a reagent for diagnosis and therapy and therefore paves the way in the study of peanut allergy.

Commenting on their success, the dean, Assoc Prof Chan Hor Kuan shared that both UCSI University and the Faculty are fully supportive of such competitions as it hones the students’ presentation and research skills.

“Even in their future careers as researchers, they cannot just be isolated in the lab. They need to convince non-scientific people – investors and members of the public – about their research,” she said.

Assoc Prof Chan shared that the Faculty’s focuses on the soft skills as well as on nurturing the students’ interest in research, particularly multidisciplinary research, to give its students an edge in the working world.

The specially designed and purpose-built laboratories at UCSI university include Basic Chemistry and Biology laboratory, Microbiology laboratory, Physiology and Pharmacology laboratory, Molecular Biology laboratory, Enzyme Technology laboratory, Fermentation and scale-up laboratory, and Animal and Plant Cell Culture Laboratory.

All these laboratories were built to ensure that our students were given the best facilities and real hands-on practical experience in the different fields of Biotechnology which is important for their future careers. The laboratories are equipped with high-value equipments such as Bioreactor, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Atomic Absorbance Spectrophotometry and such.

All UCSI University students will have to carry out a final Research Project at the end of their third academic year in these laboratories under the supervision of our highly qualified academic staff.

Each student will gain invaluable experience from their final project as they are given a chance to plan, exhibit and experience real hands-on laboratory practical work.

To differentiate from other institutions of higher learning offering the same degree programme, UCSI University students are well-equipped for the workforce before graduation. Their Biotechnology programme is a homegrown B.Sc. degree and is tailored to incorporate Co-Op training in year 1, 2 and 3 of study. UCSI students have the opportunity of working for two months at the end of each of the three academic years on their Co-Operative Placements in a company in the related industries.

This means they would have more than six months of real world working experience before they graduate. The Co-Op aims to develop not only students’ communications and soft skills, but also help students to relate theory with practical and working experience in the Biotechnology industry in Malaysia.

It also aims to provide students with technical and analytical skills to carry out life science research and prepares them to pursue postgraduate studies in a range of disciplines.

The career opportunities for a biotech graduates range across many industry sectors due to the wide applications of biotechnology. These include the food and agricultural sector, medical and bio-pharmaceutical sector, industrial and environmental sector as well as the animal and aquaculture sectors.

The University is also constantly working with the industry to set up specialised labs which ensure students are updated with the latest industrial practices. Currently, the University has established laboratories jointly with National Instruments and RICOH under the School of Engineering and the School of Information Technology, respectively.

Due to its rapid expansion, an additional 48-storey building will be built on the existing Campus that will include a 5-Star hotel, twelve floors of parking bays and hostel accommodations for UCSI University students, administrative offices, restaurants, a ballroom and also a clubhouse.

Biotechnology has been identified as an integral part of Malaysia’s plan to accelerate the nation’s transformation into an innovation-driven, knowledge-based economy, said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin. He said the government had implemented the Bioeconomy Transformation Programme or BTP in its efforts to enhance and complement the National Biotechnology Policy.

The Malaysian Biotechnology Corp Sdn Bhd (BiotechCorp) is confident that BioNexus-status companies will achieve a combined revenue of RM3 billion by the end this year, as most launch their products for sale in the market, said its CEO Datuk Dr Mohd Nazlee Kamal. Last year, the total revenue of BioNexus companies was RM1.1 billion, with many of their products still in the market strategy stage of commercialisation. “Our companies are now producing more products and getting their products into the market.

WHAT IS BIOECONOMY TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME (BTP) Malaysia

BTP is part of the economic transformation programme, launched by YAB Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on 30th October 2012 to further develop the bio-based industry in Malaysia. It is in line with the objective of the government to develop Malaysia into a high-income nation by the year 2020.
The BTP aims to achieve this by focusing on the specific bio-based industries in Malaysia, a sector that had been identified as a potential key strength of the nation due to the natural resources available.
During the launch of the BTP, 10 Entry Point Projects (EPPs) were identified to develop the national bio-based industry. Within these 10 EPPs, 20 private sector-driven Trigger Projects constitute the initial tranche of the launched ventures.

TARGETS OF THE BTP in Malaysia

BTP is targeted to contribute RM48 billion of the Gross National Income (GNI) in 2020, promote 170,000 of job opportunities and attract RM50 billion in investments by 2020.
Since the launch of the BTP in October 2012, BiotechCorp continued to identify high-impact bioeconomy projects within the bio-based industry that would contribute to these targets.

As of October 2015, a total of 48 Trigger Projects had been identified for inclusion into the BTP.

The specially designed and purpose-built laboratories at UCSI university include Basic Chemistry and Biology laboratory, Microbiology laboratory, Physiology and Pharmacology laboratory, Molecular Biology laboratory, Enzyme Technology laboratory, Fermentation and scale-up laboratory, and Animal and Plant Cell Culture Laboratory.

All these laboratories were built to ensure that our students were given the best facilities and real hands-on practical experience in the different fields of Biotechnology which is important for their future careers. The laboratories are equipped with high-value equipments such as Bioreactor, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Atomic Absorbance Spectrophotometry and such.

All UCSI University students will have to carry out a final Research Project at the end of their third academic year in these laboratories under the supervision of our highly qualified academic staff.

Each student will gain invaluable experience from their final project as they are given a chance to plan, exhibit and experience real hands-on laboratory practical work.

To differentiate from other institutions of higher learning offering the same degree programme, UCSI University students are well-equipped for the workforce before graduation. Their Biotechnology programme is a homegrown B.Sc. degree and is tailored to incorporate Co-Op training in year 1, 2 and 3 of study. UCSI students have the opportunity of working for two months at the end of each of the three academic years on their Co-Operative Placements in a company in the related industries.

This means they would have more than six months of real world working experience before they graduate. The Co-Op aims to develop not only students’ communications and soft skills, but also help students to relate theory with practical and working experience in the Biotechnology industry in Malaysia.

It also aims to provide students with technical and analytical skills to carry out life science research and prepares them to pursue postgraduate studies in a range of disciplines.

The career opportunities for a biotech graduates range across many industry sectors due to the wide applications of biotechnology. These include the food and agricultural sector, medical and bio-pharmaceutical sector, industrial and environmental sector as well as the animal and aquaculture sectors.
