High Quality Biotechnology Degree at the Top Ranked UCSI University in Malaysia

Biotechnology is the application of biological knowledge to the development of products that can improve various aspects of life such as health, food supply, environment and general well-being.

Examples of biotechnology application in the field of medicine include diagnosis of genetic diseases, and production of medicinal pharmaceutical preparations such as vaccines. In additional, biotechnology can also be broadly applied in non-medical areas such as production of transgenic crops in the agriculture sector, and DNA fingerprinting for criminal investigation.

Why study Biotechnology in Malaysia?

The Ninth Malaysian Plan states the Government’s intention to make Malaysia a biotechnology hub. In its quest to be a major

Biotechcorp Malaysia

Biotechcorp Malaysia

biotech player in the region, the government launched the National Biotechnology Policy (NBP) in April 2005. This saw the creation of the Malaysia Biotech Corporation (MBC), a dedicated government agency to develop the industry.

The National Biotechnology Policy envisions that biotechnology will be a new economic engine for Malaysia, enhancing the nation’s prosperity and well-being.

The Policy is divided into three main phases; Phase I (2005-2010), Phase II (2010-2015), and Phase III (2016-2020). Phase I will focus on capacity building and the establishment of the Malaysian Biotech Corporation (MBC), the establishment of advisory and implementation councils, the education and training of knowledge workers, and the development of a legal and intellectual property (IP) framework.

Phase I also focuses on the creation of jobs in the areas of agricultural biotechnology, healthcare biotechnology, industrial biotechnology, and bioinformatics. Phase II will emphasise on the business aspects, such as developing expertise in drug discovery and the development based on natural resources, new product development, and technology acquisition and licensing. Phase III will be based on the results achieved in the first two phases and bringing local biotech companies to international status.

Biotechnology is not a field that involves merely research on the bench, but runs the whole gamut from thoughts seeded in research, to realisation in development, feasibility in commercialisation studies and trials, and finally culminating in the production of branded products into the marketplace.

Hence. holding a degree in Biotechnology does not mean that you will be just a researcher in a laboratory. In addition, the Biotechnology technical knowledge that students learned from this degree is applicable globally in various fields.

UCSI University’s Winners Logis, Lim, Wong and Richardo with their lecturers and fellow students celebrating their win.

Sciences students sweep four out of six awards at the 25th Intervarsity Biochemistry Seminar held at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Joko Logis and Lim Wan Chi, won two of the Best Presentation awards for the oral category while Timmy Richardo and Wong Sok Yee snagged the Best Poster Awards in the poster category. Wong is currently pursuing her degree in food science and nutrition while the others are biotechnology students.

All four students acknowledged that the academic staff played an important role in nurturing and supporting them to achieve their full potential.

For the oral category, participants were judged on the presentation of their entries as well as their competency during the question and answer session.

Logis’s entry explored the quorum sensing inhibitory properties of manuka propolis on bacteria Vibrio fischeri. He explained that his research focused on the ability of manuka propolis – a resinous component of bee hives – to disrupt the chemical communication system in disease-causing bacteria.

“Basically by inhibiting quorum sensing in these bacteria, we could reduce their ability to cause disease,” he said, adding that

this could be an alternative approach to antibiotics.

Lim and Logis revealed that the experience of sharing their final year projects with their peers and experts from other universities was a unique way to gain insight on how their projects could be further improved.

Matching their success in the poster category were Timmy Richardo and Wong Sok Yee.

Pointing out that he never expected to win, Richardo credited his supervisor and the Faculty of Applied Sciences for the firm support and guidance he received when preparing his poster.

His poster illustrated the production of synthetically modified peanut allergens to make it soluble. A soluble allergen is easier to be used as a reagent for diagnosis and therapy and therefore paves the way in the study of peanut allergy.

Commenting on their success, the dean, Assoc Prof Chan Hor Kuan shared that both UCSI University and the Faculty are fully supportive of such competitions as it hones the students’ presentation and research skills.

“Even in their future careers as researchers, they cannot just be isolated in the lab. They need to convince non-scientific people – investors and members of the public – about their research,” she said.

Assoc Prof Chan shared that the Faculty’s focuses on the soft skills as well as on nurturing the students’ interest in research, particularly multidisciplinary research, to give its students an edge in the working world.

There have been many people who have been saying that there are no jobs in Malaysia for biotechnology graduates. While this may be partly true, Malaysia has some development as described in the article below. I would personally recommend to students who have a passion for biotechnology not to give up their dreams but to pursue a biotechnology degree course at a reputable university in Malaysia with excellent facilities such as Taylor’s UniversityUCSI University or Nilai University and then go on to the Masters in Singapore.

Singapore is very established in their biotechnology with the setting up of Biopolis. To work in the biotechnology field, students must go for at least a Master degree and go for the Ph.D if possible.

environment is able to continue to draw global companies in the pharmaceutical and life science industries.

Biopolis at one-north is one of JTC’s key projects to boost the biomedical industry as Singapore’s next engine of economic growth.

Given the industry wide challenges facing the pharmaceutical and biotech markets Singapore has established itself as a highly conducive place to undertake research. Singapore has cultivated a network of government agencies, R&D infrastructure, access to diverse talents, hospitals, universities, CRO’s and manufacturing facilities, which has allowed a highly innovative culture to develop.

With this expansion comes the creation of many new jobs across the sector and the increase in employment opportunities has created great job prospects for local pharmaceutical and biotech professionals, as well as those wishing to apply their expertise in the global market by moving to Singapore.

Who works at Biopolis Singapore?

Phillip Yeo

Phillip Yeo

Philip Yeo, the mastermind of the Biopolis, a new biomedical research hub in Singapore has recruited about 100 other stars from academic medicine.

Among those recruits are the British experts Alan Colman, who helped clone Dolly the sheep in 1996 and now focuses on diabetes, and David P. Lane, who discovered the p53 tumor-suppressor gene.

Today, about 10,000 people from more than 50 nations are employed at the Biopolis, which has grown to seven buildings since 2003.

and private biomedical research institutes and organisations. When fully developed, the Biopolis will anchor the development of the entire research and development (R&D) value chain of life sciences. This will encompass basic drug discovery, clinical development and medical technology research.

Biopolis provides researchers with cutting-edge shared facilities such as laboratories for DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance staffed by trained technicians.

Business support facilities such as meeting rooms and theatrettes are also available for rent. The goal is to help biomedical companies cut R&D capital spending so they can focus the investment on accelerating drug discovery and development.

The development of Biopolis was undertaken in 5 phases.
Phase 1 cost S$500 million to build and was launched in 2003. It provides 200,000 sqm of research space which is now home to more than 2,000 scientists, researchers, technicians and administrators. The research community is fully supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure and services catering to the full spectrum of biomedical R&D activities.

Phase 4 has been taken up by Procter & Gamble for its Singapore Innovation Centre, whilst Phase 5 will provide 46,182sqm of biomedical research facility for additional laboratory space, including ready-fitted laboratories (ie Shell-plus

Today these companies and many more manufacture over S$21bn worth of medicines, nutritional products and medical devices for the global market. Specifically, biologics, rare and tropical diseases all feature highly among growth investment areas in Singapore.

Companies like Cytos Biotechnology, BioMerieux, Humalys and Siena Biotech are all in research collaborations in Singapore but it is also home to high numbers of smaller companies including Illumina, Scigen, Proligo Singapore, Chakra Biotech Pte, Invida Holdings, Veredus Laboratories and Innogene Kalbiotech. The combination of big pharma and biotechnology companies setting up in Singapore has led to the creation of a great number of interesting life science jobs for the international employment market.

Procter & Gamble (P&G), the world’s leading consumer health giant, has taken up the entire Phase 4 of the Biopolis for its Singapore Innovation Centre.

The S$250 million Innovation Centre will undertake strategic upstream corporate research through collaborative research with A*STAR, focusing on new innovations for consumers. The facility will house 400 researchers when fully completed in 2013.

Novartis, which plans to move its Institute for Tropical Diseases into one of two Biopolis buildings designated for private tenants, is fulfilling both counts. The institute’s director is Alex Matter, former head of oncology research at Novartis, who spearheaded the development of the cancer drug Gleevec.

The goal at the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases, which came to Singapore in 2003, was to develop drugs to treat

tuberculosis, malaria and dengue fever close to where these diseases are most prevalent, said Paul Herrling, head of corporate research at Novartis International A.G.

This work requires an understanding not only of molecular biology, but also of the cultural environment that may impede prevention and “how doctors in the region think and use medication,” he said.

Although Novartis is a major tenant, a significant amount of space at Biopolis will be taken up by five research institutes run by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) — the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN), the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) and the Bioprocessing Technology Institute.
