Entrepreneurship has become a crucial factor in the development and well-being of societies. It has been proven to increase innovation as well as promote productivity and healthy economic competition.

The School takes pride in grooming business graduates who can create social value through their business activities, looking beyond profit margins and emphasing on the value of contributing to the community. We cultivate purposeful business leaders who possess a different mindset and understanding of business.

We believe that purposeful leaders should have a holistic view of the company and see beyond the organisational divisions and hierarchy. Transformation can only take place when students are able to see the ‘big picture’ view of the organisation and business landscape as a whole.

As such, we provide many opportunities for students to be immersed in situations where they are challenged to see from an owner’s perspective and subsequently make decisions from an owner’s stand point. These experiences shape our graduates to see their role as part of the organisation and business community, as well as influence their desire to make a difference.

Fresh Mart – Students purchase fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers from the farms of Cameron Highlands and sell them on campus. The profits are then donated back to the local farmers. Students are thus able to help the local farming community, and gain exposure to business enterprise through real business experiences.

In order to achieve this, we employ a variety of teaching and learning strategies, where students are exposed to real-life scenarios and industry-relevant experiences that enhance student engagement, both inside and outside the classroom.

Taylor’s University Business faculty is committed to providing students with a challenging and rewarding educational experience, where they are motivated and challenged to hone their skills further through practice. This naturally transitions to the experimentation phase, resulting in a more engaging approach to learning across-the-board.

Throughout their course of study, students are encouraged to experiment and express ideas and techniques in their pursuit of gaining deeper insights into their chosen field of study.

TBS leverages on the opportunities provided by technological advances to support learners. At TBS, there is a strategic and systematic approach to combining different times and modes of learning, integrating the best aspects of face-to-face and online interactions.

We refer to this as the Blended Learning approach, and it includes:

  • Face-to-face and online learning activities and formats
  • Well-established technologies such as lecture capture, social media and emerging technologies simulations
  • 24/7 access to all learning content
  • Ability to gauge students’ progress against learning outcomes, receive supporting feedback and information on students’ progress

Students are thus empowered and better prepared to face their professional careers armed with the skills of problem-solving and communication, as well as a sense of confidence in their abilities as lifelong learners. Electronic portfolios or e-Portfolios, is utilised to support students, faculty and staff in the process of creating a dynamic and engaging tool for teaching, learning, reflection, transformation and assessment.

The e-Portfolio allows students to keep a collection of digital or electronic items, such as word documents, graphs, photos, and presentations, within a single secure online environment. This way, it serves as a digital record of the students’ achievements, abilities and classroom work throughout the course.

We incorporate the e-Portfolio into our curriculum, so students can monitor, build and reflect on their personal development. The TBS e-Portfolio is much more than just an electronic repository. It allows students to take charge of their learning and goals, their achievements at university and beyond. Our e-Portfolio serves as a powerful catalyst for integrated learning and holistic development of students, as well as a tool for personal branding and professional development.

Have you ever wondered why the cost of food rise when the government increases the petrol prices? Have you wondered why the weak economy in another country can affect the rest of the world?

You wonder why your Grandparents keep telling you what they can buy for 1 cent back in their day and now you cannot buy anything with that? All of these can be explained through economics.

Economics is the study of the production and consumption of goods and the transfer of wealth to produce and obtain those goods. Economics explains how people interact within markets to get what they want or accomplish certain goals.

Since economics is a driving force of human interaction, studying it often reveals why people and governments behave in particular ways.

There are two main types of economics:

  1. Macroeconomics
  2. Microeconomics

Microeconomics focuses on the actions of individuals and industries, like the dynamics between buyers and sellers, borrowers

and lenders.

Macroeconomics, on the other hand, takes a much broader view by analyzing the economic activity of an entire country or the international marketplace.

A study of economics can describe all aspects of a country’s economy, such as how a country uses its resources, how much time labourers devote to work and leisure, the outcome of investing in industries or financial products, the effect of taxes on a population, and why businesses succeed or fail.

People who work in economics are called economists. Economists seek to answer important questions about how people, industries, and countries can maximize their productivity, create wealth, and maintain financial stability. Because the study of economics covers many factors that interact in complex ways, economists have different theories as to how people and governments should behave within markets

As you can see, economics shapes the world. Through economics, people and countries become wealthy. Because buying and selling are activities vital to survival and success, studying economics can help one understand human thought and behavior.

Economics surrounds us and is present in almost every area of our lives. Studying the degree in economics allows graduates to understand the world we live in and how it functions. Economics is about understanding why people make decisions and the allocation of scarce resources.

Although the behavior of individuals is important, economics also addresses the collective behavior of businesses and industries, governments and countries, and the globe as a whole. Economics students in Malaysia learn everything from what determines the price of goods and services to why the average standards of living are different within Malaysia as well as between countries.

Economics is at the heart of many issues and problems facing the world today, from poverty and unemployment to inflation, the

challenge of sustaining economic growth and the interplay of government, business and financial institutions. The modern discipline also relies heavily on mathematical and statistical techniques, which are therefore a central component of most economics degrees.

Economics purports to be a scientific discipline meaning that it uses abstract mathematical models to capture the essential features of more complex real world processes and tests the validity of these models against available economic data. Studying economics is therefore about developing problem-solving skills, including mathematical and statistical techniques, acquiring general analytical skills and writing lots of reports.

Not many private universities offer the degree in Economics in Malaysia. HELP University is renowned for top business courses and offers the Bachelor of Economics (Hons) for students who desire to have a successful career in the financial world.

and then offer solutions to improve their department or business’s performance, says recruiting expert Hays.

According to the recruiter’s January to March 2015 Hays Quarterly Report, released today, as long as employers want to maintain profitability while keeping costs down, people who can offer effective process or costs solutions will be in high demand.

“Employers are hiring and they have positive intentions for the year ahead,” says Christine Wright, Managing Director of Hays in Asia. “In our conversations with employers, it’s clear that the greatest hotspots of demand will be for people who can help a business work smarter, not harder.

“All departments now need people who can analyse performance, review and improve processes, reduce costs and increase efficiencies.

“From Financial Controllers in the accountancy department, to Senior IT Consultants in the IT team and Brand Managers in the marketing department, the focus this year will be on improving the existing ways of operating while reducing costs,” said Christine.

According to the Hays Quarterly Report, the following skills are just some of those in demand in Malaysia:

Banking & Finance professionals can earn very high salaries in Malaysia

The role of Business Partner is traditionally viewed as very operational but high demand exists for professionals with vision who can balance human resource programs with business priorities.
  • Hays Information Technology: There is currently a lack of Senior IT professionals in Malaysia who possess the right balance of technical skills and business acumen. Candidates with the ability to communicate their technical expertise effectively in the business environment are highly sought.
  • Hays Finance Technology: IT Security professionals continue to be highly sought after as companies look to ensure that data is protected within the cloud and virtualization technologies.

including the FMCG sector, as the market continues to be strong and companies in Malaysia grow.

  • HAYS Oil & Gas: Despite the recent drop in the Oil Price, engineering consultancies with strong existing relationships and good project pipeline require Mechanical, Instrumentation, Piping and Process Engineers. The recent award of large downstream projects has increased confidence in this part of the industry and encouraged further investment and expansion.
  • Hays Supply Chain: There has been an increase in demand for strategic Procurement and Supply Chain Managers across all industry sectors. Candidates with a track record of process/operations improvement and cost saving are particularly in demand. Malaysian candidates as there continues to be a sufficient number of skilled finance professionals in the local market. Those who have lived, worked or studied overseas are also, and will remain, in high demand.

Soft skills in communication and stakeholder management are a major requirement for candidates looking to secure a senior or managerial role within a multinational corporation.
As well as this, employers require candidates with good technical and commercial skills and strong business acumen.

As a result, some employers are becoming more receptive to considering audit candidates who are making their first move from a Big 4 firm since their skills are adaptable and include strong communications and stakeholder management expertise.

However, attracting candidates to roles in Shared Service Centres (SSCs) and local businesses can be challenging.

In other trends, organisations are favouring candidates who can demonstrate a steady work history mixed with

genuine career progression. Those who started in a Big 4 firm and worked their way up in a genuine multinational company are particularly sought after as they are considered to be more productive, with greater international experience.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for tax professionals.

The current GST implementation in Malaysia is creating an increase in demand for candidates with GST experience.

Financial Planning Analysts are also in high demand in most commercial industries as more and more employers have realised that effective planning and financial management are key to running a financially successful business.

In terms of candidate trends, we’re seeing people looking for jobs that offer scope for career development in a reputable organisation, and of course an attractive remuneration package.

Candidates still believe that they are more likely to find this in international companies rather than local businesses.

Many candidates understand the advantage of professional qualifications when applying for permanent roles.

Also, many are starting to realise the importance of skills associated with the implementation of the GST and have started to attend seminars with a view to obtaining certification in this area.

Permanent roles are still the most common however we are seeing an increasing number of contract jobs. Employers are becoming more open to looking at international candidates who can introduce new technology and train local employees. Demand is strong for individuals with good communication and leadership skills.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for Program/Project Managers to help organisations focus on strategising the framework and roadmap prior to project realisation. They usually have process re-engineering, change management and project execution skills, as well as being able to participate in active project planning.

Business and Systems Analysts are also sought. A large number of project initiatives have created opportunities for mediators between business and technology.

In terms of candidate trends, finance technology professionals are becoming more familiar in specific technical business and technical areas. There is a demand for specialists in each specific functional breakdown such as credit risk, asset management and retail core banking.

time of the year. In addition, there are still many opportunities emerging as a number of large global businesses are setting up local offices in Malaysia.

Another trend we are noticing is the constant movement of candidates in lower support roles due to these job functions tending to be quite transactional. Moving forward, there will still be demand for candidates across all levels of employment.

In Malaysia there continues to be a shortage of IT talent. With the different government regulations and restrictions, a lot of businesses prefer to hire staff on a permanent basis. There are still staff being hired on a temporary basis, but often candidates look for the job security and social status that comes with a permanent position.

Soft skills continue to be in demand and are often seen to be more important than a candidate’s technical competence as the ability to present to senior stakeholders is highly valued.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for
Senior Project Managers (Application System / Development) as AGILE methodology experience is in tremendous demand right now.

Software Developers are also sought after. Expertise in programming and development is lacking in the local market. There are

two main reasons for this. The first is that the existing pool of candidates are providing only support services and are rarely involved in development related tasks.

The second is that the majority of Malaysian candidates would rather move to neighbouring countries for better career opportunities. This position is in high demand in an IT consultancy and banking environment, such as JAVA/J2EE Developer, ASP.Net, SharePoint, Mobile Application (Android / iOS / Mobile Web) Developer.

Employers are also looking for Business Analysts with both technical and business acumen to translate business plans into technical requirements by liaising with clients, business users, production teams and vendors. Candidates need experience in performing UAT and SIT. Demand for these Analyst is highest in the financial and IT consultancy industry.

IT Security specialists continue to be a high demand with technology moving to more sophisticated platforms such as the cloud. Moving forward, potential skills in the implementation and monitoring of IT policy will be in great demand to ensure the protection of data within the virtualization technologies.

In terms of candidate trends, we’re seeing a greater emphasis is on career progression. However, monetary rewards remain the most common motivator in the market.

full capacity. As Malaysia moves towards deepwater and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) projects, costs are expected to rise and subdued oil prices will impact investment.

While ongoing gas developments will support an increase in Malaysian gas production, the rate of production growth will be more moderate as we expect producers to direct fewer resources into maintaining gas output in the current market.

Industry consolidation will see Malaysia’s refining capacity and refined oil production fall between 2015 and 2019. This will offset the impact that the start-up of a major project in the next decade will have on Malaysia’s total refined production.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for Proposal Engineers due to the current situation in Malaysia’s oil and gas market. Engineering companies that are struggling to find new projects are adding local talent who have experience working on large complex projects.

Both Senior and Lead Process Engineers are in demand. Companies that have clinched project deals are showing a keen interest in hiring local talent where possible. Talent from Europe, the USA and Australia are also keen to explore suitable opportunities in Malaysia.

Senior Bid Engineers with good experience are high in demand. Local Malaysian candidates are particularly sought after for these positions as they have good working knowledge of creating bids and tenders that meet the criteria of local standards and specifications.

start of 2015, companies will use their new budgets to hire new staff.

This quarter will be active as new jobs and replacement roles become available thanks to people leaving their existing roles as soon as they receive their annual bonuses.

An interesting trend has been the increased investment in e-commerce businesses. Large companies either enter joint ventures with more successful e-commerce businesses that have already launched in other countries in the region, or are leveraging their current customer database to launch on their own.

Either way, Malaysia will continue to be a hotspot for new and upcoming Internet and e-commerce businesses, since the economy is still growing and there is a lot of opportunity for businesses to capitalise on this growth.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for National Sales Managers. We have seen a large spike in demand for these professionals from FMCG companies. Some are replacement roles, but many are new roles as businesses continue to grow and develop in Malaysia.

Some companies that didn’t see Asia as a main focus before have changed direction and have started to put more funds into Malaysia, and therefore need people to lead their sales teams.

In addition, as product areas become more specialised organisations require multiple Sales Managers instead of just one, which is leading to a spike in these roles.

International FMCG and pharmaceutical companies are seeking good quality Product Managers. The requirement for hard skills as well as soft skills has increased significantly. The shortage of candidates with these skills has continued to push the demand for them higher.

There has also been an increase in the need for strong Key Account Managers as businesses grow and need more people to manage their key customers. The issue is that there is a shortage of good quality candidates with the soft skills necessary to fill this need.

Corporate Communications Managers are also sought as big businesses need to handle the flow of information both internally and externally.

SUPPLY CHAIN (Logistics) Jobs in Demand in Malaysia

During the first quarter of 2015 junior to mid-level supply chain professionals moved roles, particularly in the area of

procurement. Following the Chinese New Year break we have seen an increase in the number of managerial and senior level roles that are becoming active and we expect this trend to continue.

In the second quarter movement will rise at the senior level as employees collect their annual bonus and many turn their attention to external opportunities. Employers remain primarily focused on Malaysian candidates as they continue to seek talented local professionals.

In terms of skills in demand for the April – June 2015 quarter, we’re seeing a high demand for Procurement Leads / Managers. Hands-on candidates with staff management experience are very much in demand, as are experienced buyers with specific category knowledge.

There is a mixture of new and replacement roles, with the focus being on candidates with a proven track record of cost savings through the use of strong negotiation skills and effective supplier management. We expect this demand to continue as new companies enter the market and existing companies realise the direct impact a strong procurement team can have on their profit.

Planning Professionals (Supply/Demand/Production) are also sought after. These professionals remain in high demand, particularly in the area of demand planning. This is due to a shortage of candidates in the Malaysia market and the preference of hiring managers to focus on candidates from a similar industry.

Experienced Supply Chain Managers remain in demand, particularly those with experience working abroad or in large multinational companies. Many companies who have invested in new systems are now focusing on securing leaders who can help maximize their return on investment, working to develop the internal process/procedures and the efficiency of the team.

Contract Advisors and Contract Managers are also increasingly sought after. Candidates with experience in the oil & gas sectors (both upstream and downstream) are sought. Employers are focusing on candidates with strong claims management experience as well as those who can contribute during the tender stage.

Financial economics uses economic theory to evaluate how time, risk (uncertainty), opportunity costs and information that can create incentives or disincentives in the decision-making process.

Its concern is how financial variables are interrelated, such as prices, interest rates and shares, as opposed to those concerning the real economy. It has two main areas of focus: asset pricing (or “investment theory”) and corporate finance; the first being the perspective of providers of capital and the second of users of capital.

Today, many banks are commercial institutions that provide many financial services such as current and savings accounts, mortgages, credit cards, loans, insurance and investment opportunities.

Microeconomics focuses on the actions of individuals and industries, like the dynamics between buyers and sellers, borrowers and lenders.

Macroeconomics, on the other hand, takes a much broader view by analyzing the economic activity of an entire country or the international marketplace.

A study of economics can describe all aspects of a country’s economy, such as how a country uses its resources, how much

time labourers devote to work and leisure, the outcome of investing in industries or financial products, the effect of taxes on a population, and why businesses succeed or fail.

People who work in economics are called economists. Economists seek to answer important questions about how people, industries, and countries can maximize their productivity, create wealth, and maintain financial stability. Because the study of economics covers many factors that interact in complex ways, economists have different theories as to how people and governments should behave within markets

As one can see, economics shapes the world. Through economics, people and countries become wealthy. Because buying and selling are activities vital to survival and success, studying economics can help one understand human thought and behavior.

The University of London is a federal university comprising 18 Colleges and a number of smaller, specialist Institutes. In the following table, the Colleges marked (*) are those which offer distance learning qualifications through the University of London International Programmes.

The academic direction of UoL programmes – including the development of syllabuses and learning resources, as well as the assessment of International Programmes students – is the responsibility of a particular University of London College (or consortium of Colleges), known as the ‘Lead College’.

The University of London International Programmes is regularly audited by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), an independent body which safeguards the standards and quality of UK higher education. Following an institutional audit of the University of London International Programmes in May 2011, the highest judgement of ‘confidence’ was delivered by the QAA.
