The school is pioneering the concept of ‘technological artistry’ in Malaysia, an approach to incorporate creativity into technology in order to produce graduates who will be the bridge between the two fields.

institutions and industry sectors to create a high income, sustainable creative economy in the area of Game Development for Malaysia.

“The potentials of the industry are ripe for the picking, and the timing is ideal for Malaysia to seize this opportunity and enhance its global footprint in this sector,” said School of Computing and Creative Media head Tan Chin Ike.

“To ensure the industry’s success in the country, it is imperative that Malaysia develops a critical mass of skilled talents in this fast-growing industry.”

Malaysia has about 700 people currently employed in the games industry, a figure that is hoped to grow considerably in the coming years. Moreover, the country is home to companies that produce a sizeable amount of content.
The video games market in Malaysia is poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% between 2011 and 2015.

Growth will be supported by the growing spending on game applications, especially social and mobile gaming, which will be four times more than spending on music. According to industry observers, the platform has undergone a lot of growth that there is tremendous opportunity in the mobile and social game monetisation space.

With huge demands in production values and rising costs of development; the industry ha seen a shift in acquisition of creative talent.  Also the lack of specialised and qualified skilled workers; the added pressure to deliver within an increasingly shorter amount of time has created a need for people who are specially trained and competent in the workflow of Game Development Studies.

To address this concern in Malaysia, KDU University College has been given the approval by Pemandu’s Education National Key Result Area (NKEA) Steering Committee for the establishment of MYGAMEDEV2020, as an Entry Point Project under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).  This Game Development Cluster spearheaded by KDU University College, represents the start of a strategic collaboration between educational institutions and electronic games industry; with the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Pemandu to meet this growing demand.

One of the first steps taken by KDU University College is the signing of a Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) between KDU University College and Codemasters Studios.  This MoU serves to establish and develop a close partnership for talent development, national awareness, adopting Codemasters Studios benchmarking and standards for curriculum and assessment methods in game development education.

However, production values are very high and costs of development are rising partly due to heavy demand, lack of specialized and qualified skilled workers, and the pressure to deliver more within an increasingly shorter amount of time. Hence, there is a need for people who are trained and competent in the workflow of Game Development with very specialized fields of study.

KDU GAME DEVELOPMENT students emerge victorious at LEVEL UP KL 2016

In 2012, the Ministry of Higher Education awarded UOW Malaysia KDU with a PEMANDU Entry Point Project initiative under the Economic Transformation Plan and the National Key Results Area (Education) to spearhead the Game Development industry in Malaysia, focusing on awareness and talent building activities. This Game Development Cluster represents the start of a strategic collaboration between educational institutions and the Game Development industry to create a High-Income, Sustainable Creative Economy in the area of Game Development.

The primary measure of success in a digital game region is a critical mass of talent. Without critical mass, it is difficult to find support, retain talent, and attract international visibility and credibility. In an effort to maintain a constant flow of talents into the Game Development Industry, MyGameDev’s role is to ensure that not only are the relevant institutions generating graduates which are industry ready but to also prepare a ready pool of raw post-secondary student talents to feed into this pipeline.
