ACADEMIC READING AND WRITING

This is a course in university-level writing. It emphasizes academic, text-based, and themed reading and writing assignments. This course will cover the stages of composition of an academic essay, such as close reading of sources, summary, developing a thesis and organising ideas with clarity. Throughout this course, students will learn to form well-supported arguments, draw thoughtful conclusions, make responsible decisions and transfer acquired skills to their academic, professional and personal life. The teaching approach will focus on personalised and collaborative learning and teaching with emphasis given to the guided learning approach. This module is delivered via face-to-face, online and blended learning modes.

This module is assessed via course assessments such as critical review, research project, e-portfolio and class test. The assessment strategy aims to cultivate teamwork, evaluate the application of effective writing and reading strategies through formative and summative strategies. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, and communication skills.

INTRODUCTION TO APPLIED LINGUISTICS I

The focus of this module is on phonetics and phonology, and their application to English Language teaching. It introduces students to how sounds are made, and how the sounds of English differ from those of other languages. In addition, the relationship between sound and meaning will be examined. A major aim of this module is to enable students as future language teachers to diagnose problems of pronunciation and teach pronunciation in classroom settings.

This module is delivered via face-to-face, online and blended learning modes. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and project-based and collaborative learning. This module is assessed via course assessment and final examination. Students will be guided through various assessment tasks that include activity planning, microteaching and conducting a survey. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks.

INTRODUCTION TO APPLIED LINGUISTICS II

This module provides an introduction to the scientific and systematic study of language. It builds on the key concepts in phonetics and phonology covered in Introduction to Applied Linguistics I. It examines morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Students are taught to apply these concepts in the teaching of English language in classrooms. This module is delivered via face-to-face, online and blended learning modes. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and project-based and collaborative learning.

This module is assessed via course assessment and final examination. Students will be guided through various assessment tasks that include a test, project, and final exam.The assessment strategy aims to cultivate teamwork, evaluate the application of effective writing and reading strategies through formative and summative strategies. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, and communication skills.

INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING

Introduction to Creative Writing is a writing workshop. This module involved writing, editing, revising, critical reading and critical discourse and discussion. Students will work independently on their writing, but are expected to read and discuss their work with their fellow students. Students will develop the confidence in writing their own and be able to be discerning enough to be critical of others’ work in a way that is constructive and beneficial to their own writing as well. The lecturer’s role is to facilitate as well as teach students the skills and discipline of writing.

ELT METHODOLOGY

This module provides a foundation for ELT methodology. It provides an overview of the key concepts and principles for the teaching of English. It covers the teaching of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students will be introduced to literacy, technology in language learning, international curricula such as the IGCSE, and planning to teach in a language classroom. This module is delivered via face-to-face, online and blended learning modes. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and project-based and collaborative learning. This module is assessed via course assessment and final examination. Students will be required to design an e-portfolio, write an essay on ELT methodology as well as conduct a mini-research, all of which will provide students with the necessary knowledge on how students learn English as well as how to teach English.

Course assessments include both group and individual tasks. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, problem-solving skills, and communication skills.

LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND SOCIETY

This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics. It examines the relationships between language, culture and society. It explores language variation and its impact on social interaction and identity. Students will learn about, for example, the social and cultural functions of language, as well as language use in multilingual communities. It also considers the application of sociolinguistics analysis on aspects of English language teaching and in various classroom contexts.

Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and group-based and collaborative learning. This module is delivered via face-to-face, online, and blended learning modes. Guided synchronous and asynchronous sessions will be offered to ensure optimal engagement and learning opportunities. Students will be assessed using test, discussion paper, assignment (proposal), and final examination. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks.

MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT IN ELT

This is a hands-on course that focuses on the development of English language teaching materials and resources. The course examines principles and practical skills in the design of materials to teach listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, the course explores materials adaptation as well as the evaluation of teaching materials. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and group-based and collaborative learning.

The mode of delivery includes face-to-face lectures and discussions, as well as online learning, where students get to work independently and also in groups. This module is assessed via course assessments. Students are required to write an essay, create e-portfolios, and write a report to justify their selection of ELT materials. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, and global perspectives.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN ELT

This course examines the recent developments in English Language Teaching. It will prepare students as future English Language teachers to be aware of the current and ongoing debates and issues, as well as emerging trends in teaching and learning of English. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and group-based and collaborative learning. The mode of delivery includes face-to-face lectures and discussions, as well as online learning, where students get to work independently and also in groups.

The assessments include an assignment, a discussion session, a review paper, and a final examination. The assessment strategy aims to cultivate teamwork, evaluate the application of effective writing and reading strategies through formative and summative strategies. Course assessments include both group and individual tasks. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, critical and creative thinking skills, and communication skills.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

The inclusion of this course in the programme is to enable students to identify a problem in a real-world setting and develop the means to address it through the integration of various disciplines. Students will be expected to carry out an independent project which builds on and contributes to their specialization. Students will be guided to plan and develop a project that is relevant to their programme of study. In doing so, students will draw from the various bodies of knowledge acquired throughout their programme of study. Students will continuously be involved in discussions, self-directed learning and project-based learning.

The mode of delivery includes face-to-face lectures and discussions, as well as online learning, where students get to work independently and also in groups. Both guided (synchronous and asynchronous sessions) will be offered to ensure optimal engagement and learning opportunities. This module is assessed via course assessments. Course assessments include proposal and project report. Students will be assessed in the domains of knowledge, problem-solving, and lifelong learning.
