Students after SPM or O-Levels may go for the Foundation in Computing or Information Technology at top private universities in Malaysia for 1 year before continuing on to the 3-year Software Engineering degree. With 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels including Maths, students may go for the 2-year Diploma in Information Technology, Diploma in Computer Studies or Diploma in Software Engineering and then enter into Year 2 of the Software Engineering degree. Pre-University students with the relevant results in STPM, A-Levels, SAM, CPU, AUSMAT, etc. can enter directly into Year 1 of the Software Engineering degree at the best university in Malaysia.

Many students have heard that there could be no jobs for Information Technology and Software Engineering graduates because many are unemployed. While this may be true, the jobs are still plenty out there. It is not that there are no jobs, it is because the graduates do not have the skills and knowledge even after going through university. This is because they have chosen a cheaper university where they did not have experienced lecturers to equip them well. The university environment is also important because if most students speak in Mandarin at the university, then you won’t be able to improve on your communication skills in English which is important in getting a job in a Multi National Company.

According to research, the job prospects for software engineers in Malaysia are very good and well trained IT professionals can earn a high salary. It is important to choose the best university in Malaysia to study the software engineering degree course so that you can gain the knowledge and skills to succeed in your career.

Software Engineers need to use different programming languages, depending on the purpose of the program. The programming languages most often used are C, C++, and Java, with Fortran and COBOL used less commonly. Other programming languages that are in high demand are HTML, XHTML, XML, PHP, Visual Basic.

With the growth of smart phones comes with it the demand for the programming languages related to it such as the programming language, Objective C, and its software development tool (XCode) for the iOS market.

Software Engineers will also need to have a strong foundation in computer science, logic and mathematics.

Software engineers are involved in the design and development of a variety of software, including computer games, word processing and business applications, operating systems and network distribution, and compilers, which convert programs to machine language for execution on a computer.

They also install, configure and maintain software systems used by commercial or manufacturing companies. They can work with the company to coordinate each department’s needs such as ordering, billing, inventory, payroll, and records.

Software Engineers could also help set up the company’s intranets or networks that link computers within the company. This helps the communication between the departments. To develop tailor-made software systems,

Software Engineers will begin by meeting up with the client to gather information on what they would like for the software to achieve. They need to gain a thorough understanding of the client’s business and information needs, and analyse the current system.

After that, they will then analyse the information and then begin to design, develop and test the software in real situations. Software Engineers will create detailed sets of instructions, called algorithms. The

algorithms tell the computer what to do. They also are used to convert instructions into a computer language. This process is called programming or coding. Software Engineers must be experts in operating systems and middleware to ensure that the underlying systems will work properly.

Software Engineers can also develop “off-the-shelf” or “ready-made’ software packages that can be integrated into an existing operating system. The ability to integrate the software requires a thorough knowledge of the software packages and programming languages.

They will need to provide the appropriate interfaces to be used to integrate them. Software Engineers works with in a team to design new hardware, software, and systems. The team may consist of engineering, marketing, manufacturing, and design people, who work together to release a product.

Software Engineers need to ensure that their knowledge is up-to-date as technology changes rapidly. Computer software can be developed for any function for control and automation, manufacturing, business, and management systems. Restaurants use custom-made software to ensure their accounts are kept properly and orders for food can be made efficiently so that wastage is managed.

Both computer science and software engineering curricula generally require a foundation in programming fundamentals and basic computer science theory. They differ in their focus beyond these core elements. Computer science programs tend to keep the core small and then expect students to choose among more advanced courses (such as systems, networking, database, artificial intelligence, theory, etc.).

In contrast, Software Engineering programs generally expect students to focus on a range of topics that are essential to the Software Engineering agenda (problem modeling and analysis, software design, software verification and validation, software quality, software process, software management, etc.).

While both Computer Science and Software Engineering programs typically require

students to experience team project activity, Software Engineering programs usually requires more team involvement as effective team processes are essential to effective Software Engineering practices.

In addition, a key requirement specified by the Software Engineering curriculum guidelines is that Software Engineering students should learn how to build software that is genuinely useful and usable by the customer and satisfies all the requirements defined for it.

ICT Job Market Outlook in Malaysia 2016 by PIKOM

Average Monthly Salary for Malaysians in 2016 According to PIKOM

Adapted by EduSpiral Consultant Services For more information contact 01111408838

The average monthly salary of an ICT professional in Malaysia grew from RM7,706 in 2014 to RM8,114 in 2015,  an increase of 5.3%. This year, the projected average monthly salary is RM8,496, a 4.7% increase over 2015. Despite challenging economic factors, Malaysia’s 2016 ICT job market remains positive albeit with slower than expected growth and concerns about the outflow of talent, according to national ICT industry association PIKOM’s latest research.

During the recent unveiling of the ICT Job Market Outlook in Malaysia 2016, PIKOM chairman Chin Chee Seong said the local ICT (information and communications technologies) industry has shown resilience in the face of challenges that started in 2014. These included the slowdown of the economy, the drop in the prices of crude oil and commodities, the depreciation of the Ringgit against major currencies as well the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), said Chin.

He said the total value of ICT in Malaysia for 2015 was estimated to be RM155.2 (US$38.51) billion, based on the average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 8 percent for the period 2010-2015. Chin said that ICT industry’s share of the national economy has expanded from 16.5 percent in 2010 to 17.6 percent in 2015 while the ICT industry’s main driver has been the ICT Services (ICTS) subsector – its contribution to GDP (gross domestic product) increased from 3.3 percent in 2000 to 6.6 percent in 2015 and may reach 7 percent by end of 2016.

“It has been a challenging 2015 for the industry,” he added. “But we have achieved positive growth that has been particularly driven by the expansion in the ICT Services subsector.”

In 2015, an IT Project Manager in Malaysia earned more than their counterparts in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and India but much less than the ones in United States, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

These are some of the many interesting findings in the National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM)’s ICT JOB MARKET OUTLOOK IN MALAYSIA 2016 report. The report was done in collaboration with Jobstreet.com, a leading online job board presently covering the employment markets in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The report has been an indispensable guide to C-level executives, human resource practitioners, job seekers, undergraduates and many others, for more than eight years. It is aimed at helping decision makers in organisations, to understand and plan their talent requirements and budgets as well as to give job hunters a realistic view on the market rate for certain job categories, when they are asked for their salary expectations.

our country since 2014 such as the slowdown of the economy, the drop in the prices of crude oil and commodities, the depreciation of the Ringgit against major currencies and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the ICT industry in Malaysia showed resilience and continued its growth path. The total ICT value in Malaysia for 2015 is estimated to be RM155.2 billion, based on the Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR) of 8% for the period 2010-2015.

The share of the ICT industry to the economy expanded from 16.5% in 2010 to 17.6% in 2015.The main driver of the ICT industry growth is the ICT Services subsector whose share to the GDP rose from 3.3% in 2000 to 6.6% in 2015 and is projected to reach 7 % by end of 2016.“It has been a challenging 2015 for the industry. But we have achieved positive growth that has been particularly driven by and thanks to, the expansion in the ICT Services subsector, “said PIKOM Chairman Chin Chee Seong.

While ICT Manufacturing subsector has been slowing, the ICT Services subsector has been experiencing positive growth in the last two decades, he added.“Consistent with industry growth, salaries also rose although at a slower growth rate,” said Chin, at a press conference today held at PIKOM’s premises in Damansara Perdana.

In the table above, the construction / building /engineering industries posted the highest AAGR of the average monthly salary of ICT professionals for the 2009 to 2015 period, at 8.8%, followed by education (8.6%); automotive/heavy industry/machinery (8.5%) and electrical and electronics (8.5%).
Not surprisingly, the oil / gas / petroleum industry which has been experiencing a downturn, registered an AAGR of 4.7% over the same period and a 2.9% year-on-year growth in 2015.

However, oil/gas/petroleum was in the top five paying industries by job category. The other four are banking services; automotive/heavy industry/machinery; agriculture/plantation/aquaculture; and chemical/fertilisers/pesticides.

“The oil, gas and petroleum sector is still ranked as one of the overall top-paying industries by job categories despite the current industry downturn,” said PIKOM Research Committee Chair Woon Tai Hai.“In fact in the fresh graduates, senior executives and middle manager job categories, the oil, gas and petroleum was in the top five paying industries in 2015 posting an average monthly salary of RM2,984, RM8,291 and RM11,804respectively,” he added. However, PIKOM acknowledged that the 5.3 %salary growth for 2015 for the overall average monthly salary of ICT professionals is the lowest in eight years, said Woon.

“In fact in the fresh graduates, senior executives and middle manager job categories, the oil, gas and petroleum was in the top five paying industries in 2015 posting an average monthly salary of RM2,984 (US$740), RM8,291 (US$2,057) and RM11,804 (US$2,929) respectively,” Woon said.

The study found that construction / building /engineering industries posted the highest AAGR of the average monthly salary of ICT professionals for the 2009 to 2015 period, at 8.8 percent, followed by education (8.6 percent); automotive/heavy industry/machinery (8.5 percent) and electrical and electronics (8.5 percent).

The oil / gas / petroleum industry, which has been experiencing a downturn, registered an AAGR of 4.7 percent during the same period and a 2.9 percent year-on-year growth in 2015. “The oil, gas and petroleum sector is still ranked as one of the overall top-paying industries by job categories despite the current industry downturn,” said PIKOM Research Committee chair Woon Tai Hai.

While the industry expected a downturn, it certainly did not expect an impact of such magnitude, he said.“Perhaps it is also a wake-up call for the industry to realise that although salaries have been growing, future salary growth cannot be taken for granted,” he added.
The Challenge of Retaining Local Talent Remains

As in previous years, the industry continues to face the exodus of talent who seek greener pastures overseas due to better salaries and remunerations. When benchmarked against Asia, United States and Middle East, Malaysia continues to lag behind in terms of salaries, which has been a key factor in the continued prevalence of the brain drain issue.

The average monthly salary growth for an ICT professional saw an increase of 5.3% in 2015 compared to 10.9% in 2010, according to Pikom’s ICT Job Market Outlook In Malaysia 2016 report The National ICT Association of Malaysia says while the industry expected a downturn, it didn’t expect an impact of such magnitude. “People in the ICT industry won’t get that 10% salary increase again. This is a wake up call for the industry,” says Pikom advisor and research committee chair Woon Tai Hai.

Pikom also acknowledges that the 5.4% growth for 2015 for the overall average monthly salary is the lowest in eight years, he says. ICT professionals shouldn’t get their hopes up for a big raise this year – Woon says the report estimates salary growth to be 4.7% for 2016.

“It has been a challenging 2015 for the industry. But we have achieved positive growth that has been particularly driven by and thanks to, the expansion in the ICT Services subsector,” says Pikom chairman Chin Chee Seong.

The Jobstreet.com Employment Confidence Index found that most employees are not confident of getting a job given that 46% of prospective employers say that their business have been impacted while 54% say they may even consider downsizing. Jobstreet collaborated with Pikom on the ICT Job Market report.

The average salary for an ICT professional in 2015 was RM8,114.

However, oil/gas/petroleum was in the top five paying industries by job category. The other four are banking services; automotive/heavy industry/machinery; agriculture/plantation/aquaculture; and chemical/fertilisers/pesticides.

He confirmed that PIKOM found that the 5.3 percent salary growth for 2015 for the overall average monthly salary of ICT professionals is the lowest in eight years. Woon added that while the industry expected a downturn, “it certainly did not expect an impact of such magnitude. Perhaps it is also a wake-up call for the industry to realise that although salaries have been growing, future salary growth cannot be taken for granted.”

The Purchasing Power Parity Adjusted Criterion benchmarking scale in 2015, which takes into account inflation rates and fluctuations in the foreign exchange, showed that the average monthly salary of an IT Project Manager at entry level in the United Arab Emirates and United States was respectively, 2.18 and 1.5 times more than in Malaysia.

The average monthly salary of an entry level IT Project Manager, in Thailand, Hong Kong andSingapore, was 1.95 times, 1.88 times and 1.38 times, respectively, more than in Malaysia. It is imperative that both the industry and government tackle the issue of talent outflow through ensuring continuous stream of quality fresh graduates entering the work force, promoting R&D and commercialisation and maintaining competitive salary packages, said PIKOM Chairman Chin.

Remuneration moves in Malaysia

Online job platform JobStreet again conducted the study, which found that the average monthly salary of an ICT professional in Malaysia grew from RM7,706 (US$1,912) in 2014 to RM8,114 (US$2013) in 2015, an increase of 5.3 percent. This year, the projected average monthly salary is RM8,496 (2,108), a 4.7 percent increase over 2015.

Chin said that in 2015, an IT Project Manager in Malaysia earned more than their counterparts in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and India but much less than the ones in United States, United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong.

Though the ICT Manufacturing subsector has been slowing, the ICT Services subsector has been experiencing positive growth in the last two decades, he added.”Consistent with industry growth, salaries also rose although at a slower growth rate.”

Chin said that generally all ICT job categories, such as fresh graduates, junior executives, senior executives, middle level managers and senior managers registered a positive salary increase in 2015 albeit with a lower-than-expected growth.

Computer software engineers, or software developers, design and develop software applications or computer systems in Malaysia. They develop computer applications for clients as well as the major systems that make a computer run.

Students interested in a career in computer software engineering needs to have analytical skill, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills as well as creativity and attention to detail; familiarity with database management, development environment, program testing and other related software.

Students should be good in Mathematics and possess at least a Credit in SPM or O-Levels for Maths. Students should have a strong interest in programming and lots of patience in creating a programme.

Step 1: Learn About the Software Engineering Career in Malaysia

I didn't come from a rich family. My mother was recommended to EduSpiral who advised us to go for First City University College's affordable diploma and yet high quality. Hou Tung, Diploma in IT at KBU International College

Hou Tung, Diploma in IT at KBU International College

Computer software engineering includes a variety of tasks and job descriptions, so aspiring software engineers may need to research the field before pursuing education and training that will prepare them for a particular career path. The types of software that computer software engineers create, test and evaluate include business applications, network control systems, operating systems, databases, middleware and computer games. Software engineers may use a variety of different programming languages.

Those who work primarily with computer systems may design and implement data assurance and system security, as well as customize computer systems to meet the needs of clients. They may also set up intranets, which are networks that allow different computers within an organization to communicate.

Step 2: Talk to Knowledgeable & Experienced Counselors

Talking to an experienced education advisor would help you to navigate through this confusing time of choosing the best course that fits you.

Experienced education counselors are able to analyse your interests, personality and exam results

to help you make a list of possible courses for consideration. EduSpiral Consultant Services staff have more than 15 years experience in counseling students. Having worked in the private education industry, we have in-depth knowledge of each private university and college in what they are good at.

EduSpiral Consultant Services has worked with our partner universities and colleges for many years while the counselors at the private universities or agents’ offices change every few years therefore they would not have the in-depth knowledge of the courses and the university that they are working at.

At EduSpiral Consultant Services, I have worked in the private higher education industry in Malaysia for more than 15 years advising students with facts and evidence on how to choose the right course after SPM. You should carefully think about what are the options available to you. To choose the best course that fits you, students may fill up our EduSpiral Career Assessment form for evaluation.

The EduSpiral Career Assessment form is a simple form designed by us that gathers information from students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM or A-Levels in order to assess their aptitude helping us to determine the most suitable course and career progression.

Step 3: Choose to Study the Bachelor’s Degree at a Top University in Malaysia

A bachelor’s degree is usually the minimum education requirement for computer software engineering jobs in Malaysia. Those who work with applications typically major in software engineering, computer science or mathematics. Courses in a computer science undergraduate program may include computer fundamentals, data structures, principles of programming languages, software engineering and computer architecture.

Students must choose a top university in Malaysia for computer software engineering in order to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful in this career.

A good university would have a solid internship programme in place. Employers in Malaysia may prefer to hire those who have relevant experience in addition to a bachelor’s degree. Students can participate in internships during their undergraduate education to enhance their employment prospects. Internships also enable students to gain hands-on experience and learn new skills from professionals in the industry.

Step 4: Get Professional Certificate During your Studies in Software Engineering in Malaysia

Gain professional certification. Obtaining certification can demonstrate a certain level of competence and make job applicants more competitive.

Product vendors, software firms and professional computing societies, such as the Institute for Certification of Computer Professionals (ICCP), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and many more offer certification programmes in Malaysia.

Students who seek certification from a product vendor or software firm may be required to work with the company’s products, while certification from a professional computing society typically requires a series of examinations, maintenance of membership and periodical recertification.

Step 5: Gain Related Experience and Skills in your Job in Malaysia

Since computer software engineers design new software programs, they should have a high degree of creativity. They should also have strong problem-solving, mathematical and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work with abstract concepts. Communication skills are also important since they must interact with hardware engineers, industrial designers, manufacturing operations personnel and end users to develop software products. An entry-level position, such as a computer support specialist or computer technician, can help prospective engineers develop these skills and obtain hands-on experience in the field.

evidence of quality and commitment of the university to providing you with a solid education in IT.

There are many IT graduates out there and many more graduating. With so many jobs available and yet there are many IT graduates who are not able to find a job. Why is that?

The answer is because the colleges and universities have not prepared their students with the knowledge and necessary IT skills to secure a job.

According to Dr. Shawn Tan in his article in Digital News Asia on March 13, 2013, stated “While it is not difficult to hire people, it is increasingly difficult to hire good people, something that is corroborated with the situation on the ground. What the entire industry sorely needs is brains, but what we get are mostly bodies.

For some reason, our universities are not graduating the right kind of people. Therefore, the real problem is that we have one too many bad Computer Science programs in our country.”

In addition to IT knowledge and skills, students also lack communication skills and possess a poor

command of the English language.  Without all these, you are unable to pass through the first interview.

Don’t choose a university or college because it is cheap and where the students speak mostly in their mother tongue.

Although the fees are cheap, but in this environment, you will not learn the valuable communication skills that will help you to succeed in your future career.

This means a lower salary for the next 60 years of your work life.

Job Outlook in Malaysia has a Solid Demand For Information Technology Specialists

remains an unwavering demand for various IT job positions.

Constantly evolving technologies, the explosion of big data and mobile apps as well as the expansion of the global IT industry have led to consistently high demand for experienced and skilled IT experts in Malaysia, according to recruitment specialist Hays. The latest Hays Quarterly Report of skills in demand shows that employers are recruiting a range of IT skills from developers to IT security experts and business analysts.

“There’s no doubt that IT experts are in high demand and companies have shown no indication that they will ease up their recruitment activity in this business critical area,” Tom Osborne, Regional Director of Hays in Malaysia, pointed out. “Demand exists across the board for a wide range of skills.”

According to Osborne, IT is a varied and exciting industry with a huge array of specialist areas. “The demand for candidates is just as diverse,” he noted.

Referring to demand for database administrators, Osborne explained that these candidates are needed to ensure high service availability and robust databases that will support the business. An increasing need for large data storage solutions in Malaysia is also driving up demand for database administrators.

“Developers are another area of demand,” reckoned Osborne. “Software developers are in increasing demand to keep pace with evolving technologies and the creation of new coding languages.”

Mobile developers are also in greater demand to work in software development companies as well as to

create easy to use applications for mobile technology, namely Android and iOS. Employers are interested in candidates with the usual front-end skills such as JavaScript, CSS, HTML and PHP but have recently become more interested in those with mobile technology experience. Elsewhere, employers are also looking for IT security analysts and IT security engineers to mitigate technology risks within the financial sectors.

“Employers want to hire candidates who have the technical skills in penetration testing, risk assessment and vulnerabilities assessment within the IT security spectrum,” suggested Osborne. “While more roles are being created, many candidates are operationally rather than technically strong, thus creating a shortage of the right candidates.”

Another job area which sees demand is IT auditor as such candidate is needed to help employers comply with central bank policies. “Candidates not only need an operational background in audit but they must have systems experience,” rationalized Osborne. “Companies prefer local candidates because they understand local systems.”

On the business side, Hays observed that there is also demand for skills. The recruitment specialist is seeing huge demand from consulting companies for business analysts, project managers, delivery managers, change managers and business process and transformation specialists.

“Most employers expect these professionals to have strong technical expertise and business acumen,” noted Osborne. “They need to be able to translate business plans into technical requirements by liaising with clients, business users, production teams and vendors.”

Finally, Osborne pointed to the demand for product managers for big data and mobile apps which is booming in Malaysia and across the region. “This is still a relatively new area and most Malaysian candidates lack an iOS and Android development background,” he added.
