SETARA 2017: The Best Universities in Malaysia Ranked by MQA

SETARA 2017: A Malaysian Ranking System of the Best Universities in Malaysia

Written by EduSpiral Consultant Services. For more information contact 01111408838

First introduced in 2007, SETARA focuses on the quality of the teaching; it also gives some power back to the students by involving appraisals by students who will audit lecturers on several points including punctuality and satisfaction on the delivery of subjects.

The MQA Rating System for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia for 2017 (SETARA ’17) is the fifth rating exercise undertaken at the institutional level for universities and university colleges in Malaysia after the SETAR 2013,  SETARA ’11, SETARA ’09 (using 2009 data) and SETARA 2007 (using 2006 data).

The resulting rating system uses a six-tier categorization with Tier 6 identified as “Outstanding” and Tier 1 as “Weak”.

SETARA 2017 Ranking of Malaysian Universities

A total of 8 universities were awarded the much coveted 6 star rating (Outstanding) by the Rating for Higher Education Institutions in Malaysia, or better know as SETARA, in their highly anticipated 2017 ratings. Out of the 71 universities evaluated, a total of 58 managed to snag a rating of at least 4 stars (Very Good), which according to SETARA, is considered an improvement.

The position of the universities and university colleges in the respective tiers was based on their scores. It is a rating of the top universities in Malaysia.

Using a six-tier category, the SETARA Rating System ranges from:

Tier Six (Outstanding)

Tier Five (Excellent)

Tier Four (Very Good)

Tier Three (Good)

Tier Two (Satisfactory)

Tier One (Weak)

SETARA’13 evaluated 53 higher learning institutions (IPTs) in Malaysia. It serves as a measuring tool to assess the quality of teaching and learning, using the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) for Bachelor’s Degree Programmes.

Representing the Best Universities in Malaysia

EduSpiral Consultant Services is proud to represent some of the best universities in Malaysia that are ranked Tier 6 and Tier 5 in the SETARA 2017 university ranking.

Students should note that ranking systems are just a guide and choosing the best university that fits you should take into consideration the course, lecturers’ experience, reputation & experience of the university, facilities, location, budget, student culture, student services, English-speaking student environment, and other factors.

Students after SPM, O-Levels, UEC, STPM, A-Levels or Pre-University should choose the best private university or college in Malaysia to study so that you can gain the top skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the competitive working world.

Every university and course in Malaysia is different and each student wants different things to fit their education and career goals. There are hundreds of private universities and colleges in Malaysia offering a wide range of Foundation, Diploma & Degree courses.

Students after SPM, O-Levels, STPM, UEC, A-Levels or other Pre-University programme will almost certainly need to decide what is most important to you.

I met up with EduSpiral and he to me to a few universities for a tour. We also discussed about the courses in detail to help me decide which university would be best for me for interior design.

So choosing the right course at the right university in Malaysia for you will require some research and consultation with knowledgeable and experienced counselors. The more research you put into the process the more likely you will make the right decision. Doing your homework will pay-off.

Choosing the right university takes time to decide. You should visit the campus and talk to the staff and lecturers there. Check their facts to see what they say is true. See if the environment and facilities are good and that the students communicate in English there. EduSpiral Consultant Services takes students to visit the universities’ campuses to take them around for a tour and to give them in-depth counseling.

Some students choose their university because their friends are going there, or because their relatives said it was good, or the university was famous or glamourous.

I wasn't sure which university to study at and found EduSpiral online. He provided good advise & helped me with my application. I love my university life now. Hanson, Foundation in Science (Engineering) at UCSI University

Remember, you are choosing a university that will help to prepare you to work for the next 60 years of your life. If the university doesn’t equip you with the necessary knowledge and skills, you would get a low salary for the next 60 years of your life.

When making a decision, it is important to decide based on facts and evidence. Many students have told me that they chose a university because their auntie or uncle said that it was good.

But the question is, “What is their definition of good?” What is actually specifically good about the university?

When we ask these uncles and aunties this question, they would say because they have heard of the university before or someone told them that it was good. Now, that’s not a really good guide on choosing the university.

EduSpiral met me and my parents at KDU University College to explain about the hospitality course and then took us around for a campus tour. This helped me to make my choice on what to study and where to study easier. Jia Lin, Hospitality at KDU University College Utropolis Glenmarie

Furthermore many of the top private universities in Malaysia offer similar courses therefore making your decision a challenging one! Remember that no university is good at everything and no university is good at one area of study in Malaysia.

Many students in Malaysia are confused by advertisements, popularity and rumours. They simply believe the advertisements or the claims made by their friends and relatives without checking if they are true or not.

For example, one college claims that it is the best college in Malaysia for Law but there is no supporting evidence provided. Another misconception is just because a university is good for one course doesn’t mean that it is good for all the rest.

I was planning to study at a "famous" university but EduSpiral provided facts & evidence that First City UC had won many awards compared to my "famous" university. Zi En, Interior Design at First City University College

Some students have made the conclusion that one college in Sunway is good for all design courses including interior design even though it hasn’t won any awards for interior design and that it is a new course.

You must make your decisions based on facts and evidence, not on hearsay or gossip that is not supported by statistic, research, report or evidence. Many students spend more time doing research to buy your mobile phone than on choosing the university. Don’t you think spending time doing research and asking the right people about the university that could determine your future is more important? Would you ask a Doctor on how to repair your car?
