Students after SPM or O-Levels interested in a career in software engineering can go for the 1 year Foundation in Information Technology programmes at top private universities in Malaysia.  The Foundation in Information Technology (IT) programmes are cheaper and generally easier than the external Pre-University programmes.

The Foundation is 1 year in duration and upon completion, students will enter the 3-year software engineering degree programme.

The Foundation in Information Technology or Foundation in Computing & Technology courses provide a solid foundation for students to adapt to university education more confidently, both in terms of level and style of education of the particular university.

Many top private universities in Malaysia, have developed their own internal university foundation programmes. The Foundation in Information Technology (IT) and Foundation in Computer Studies courses are accredited by the Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) and recognised by the respective foreign partner universities.

Students after SPM or O-Levels can also choose other Pre-University programmes before continuing on to the degree in Software Engineering. Each Pre-University programme will differ in their education and learning system, subjects and assessments.

Pre-University programmes such as STPM, A-Levels, South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or SACEi, AUSMAT, CIMP, IB, etc are some courses that you can consider.

However, note that the subjects in these Pre-University programmes may not contain any computing subjects hence it may not prepare you as well to handle the software engineering degree. Maths is a requirement to enter the degree in software engineering.

Students after SPM or O-Levels may go for the Diploma in Information Technology (IT) or 2 years before entering into Year 2 of the Computer Science degree programme. In the software engineering degree programme in Malaysia, you will take a course that emphasises the principles of programming and a course on computing fundamentals. You will study Java programming, object-oriented software engineering, data structures and algorithms, algorithmic foundations, computer systems and web application development. Courses in an undergraduate programme may also include computer fundamentals, data structures, principles of programming languages, and computer architecture.

Software Engineering degree students will also be exposed to VB.net, HTML, J2ME, Java Scripting as well as networking and business communication. The modules lead into all aspects of software applications; internet technology; multimedia technology; information systems; operating systems; systems methodologies; visual programming; and database management systems.

In addition, students may take some non-IT courses such as marketing, business communication and problem- solving, among others, are included in the course so that students are equipped with transferable skills that will enable them to work efficiently both independently and in teams.

Students will normally take about 35 subjects or more. Furthermore, all students are also required to successfully complete General Studies modules as stipulated by the Malaysian Qualification Agency, as well as fulfil credit requirements for Co-Curricular Activities. Alternatively, students after SPM or O-Levels may go for the Foundation in Computing or Information Technology at top private universities in Malaysia for 1 year before continuing on to the 3-year Software Engineering degree. Minimum requirements are 5Cs including Maths and passes in BM and Sejarah.

Pre-University students with the relevant results in STPMA-LevelsSAMCPUAUSMAT, etc. can enter directly into Year 1 of the Software Engineering degree at the best university in Malaysia. At least 5Cs including Maths is required to enter the Pre-University courses however you will need to check the specific requirements.
