There are many roles people can play within a multimedia project, and thus, promises a future for those who wish to undertake multimedia as a career path.

Being a multimedia expert does not automatically reflect an individual’s specialisation in one particular area, but instead expertise can be described as a tool related or process related to multimedia products and services. People who are great at programming in macromedia Lingo or HTML, or who are experts with Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia Director, can easily be hired and staffed on oncoming projects.

It is critical for a multimedia enthusiast to know the roles of each individual because the roles shall determine their tasks and responsibilities. The roles can be separated into major disciplines including business and project management, marketing and sales, legal work, creative direction, media production, programming, testing, and support.

WHAT ARE THE WORK CONDITIONS?

Most of the time you will spend in front of the computer to design the client’s work. You will work late hours and can be stressful at times to meet the deadlines. Difficult clients may make many changes to the brief. Multimedia Designers with excellent design and communication skills are able to start their own company and be their own boss. There are many freelance jobs as well as opportunities to work from home.

  • Travel: You will not be required to travel a lot but you may need to meet up with the client to find out their brief for the job.
  • Working hours: mainly 9 AM to 6PM but deadlines may require additional hours to be worked. Most designers will work late hours in Malaysia.
  • Location: mainly in towns or cities throughout the country though freelance multimedia designers can also work from home.
  • Opportunities for self-employment: freelance work is common. If you are good, you can start your own company.

To succeed in the multimedia industry in Malaysia, one need to pick an area of concentration and focus on areas that correspond to one’s interests and strongest skills. Below is a list of possible job placement in the Multimedia industry. It is by no means exclusive nor the only jobs available.

  • Executive Director – Found in both publisher’s and production studios. Executive Directors on the publisher’s sideoften report to a vice president or general manager. Executive Directors at production studios are often also presidents.
  • He is in charge of overall planning, execution and monitoring of the whole production of synopsis and treatment report, marketing plan, cost analysis and budgeting of the project at the preliminary stages.
  • Producer – Has two main responsibilities. The first is to plan a project and move it into production and the second is to supervise its creation once in production.
  • Creative Directors – Secure the quality of every presentation of a media product on every project. They are engaged with how the company is reflected and represented in all products and media materials.
  • Creative Director for Video – Responsible for the digital video shooting, editing, and special effects and research and development of emergence of new digital video technology.
  • Art Director – Responsible for all the artwork created for a project. Art director analyses the creation of artwork at every phase and helps guide the media professionals on the project to follow certain design standards.
  • Interface Designer – Is one of the most recent careers in multimedia. An interface designer is
  • responsible for the entire interface of a product.
  • Game Designer – Is a distinctive form of interface designer. A game designer designs interactive games. These games can either be developed for cartridges, CD-ROMs, or online worlds.
  • Scriptwriter – Is part traditional writer and part interactive designer. The distinction between traditional writing and interactive writing lies in the incorporation of various forms of interactivity within a work.
  • Editor/ Moderator – Filters information or regulates discussions. In interactive media, most people in these roles work basically in online environment.
  • Content Expert – Has the authority to furnish some standard of authenticity or accuracy to the information in an interactive project. A content expert’s position can range from strictly advisory to direct commitment.
  • Visual Designer – Is skilled in one of the areas of graphic design, calligraphy, illustration, and photography, as well as
  • image scanning and manipulation. This is because the area of visual design is a mixture of many different visual areas. They produce suitable visual materials for a multimedia product.
  • 2D Animators – Take a series of static images and flash them in rapid succession on the computer screen to create the illusion of motion. Animators will form the illusion of motion and gesture with animation that take place on tiny pieces of screen real estate.
  • 3D Animators – Are the hired experts of multimedia, with the skills, the machines, and the software that can turn a Michael Jackson into a panther, or make dinosaurs come to life in Jurassic Park. 3D animators have made tremendous contributions to the use of computer graphics in the entertainment productions.
  • Sound Producers – Are part managers, part creative artists, and part programmers. Their responsibilities often include designing and producing all sounds within a product, including musical scores, vocals, voice-overs, sound effects, and ambient and/ or navigational sounds. They are especially well-known in the game industry.
  • Sound Engineer/ Sound Editor – Manages the sound equipment before, and after recording sessions. They set up equipment, perform sound checks, record music and/ or voice parts, and then mix them together. A sound editor edits sound files for tone, length and effects to be converted into the format needed.
  • Lead Programmer – Is one of the foundation of the project. The primary duties are to help craft and achieve the technology strategy for business. A lead programmer helps define the composition and actions of a product and recommends on the technical concern of certain decisions. Lead programmer needs to know both management standard and technology.
  • Programmers – Create the supporting software that runs a multimedia programme and responds to the user’s action. The different positions in programming are lead or senior programmer, programmer and junior programmer. Another form of programmer is a scripter. A programmer can also be a system administrator.
  • Interactive Programmer – Write interactive programming codes linking all multimedia contents, including special customised effects.
  • Internet
    Web Master – Overall planning, execution and monitoring of the whole Web design including cost planning and budgeting of the Web production.
  • Web Producer – Implementation and monitoring of Web design including scheduling management and coordination.
  • Web Designer – Responsible for the design of the layout of the Web Page, making sure that the hypertext is easy to read and has interesting graphics.
  • Web Coder – Responsible for the coding of Web page with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and browsing process that connects one page to other pages on websites.
  • Fresh graduates will often be offered the post of graphic artists, interactive programmers, Web coders or Web designers. Higher qualifications or experience are required for project leaders, art directors, interactive programming directors or Web producers.
  • With seniority, one can take up the challenge to be a producer, executive director or Web master and act as the key person in the development of multimedia and Internet. Besides the above, one of the new areas in multimedia & Internet is in combining digital video shooting with emerging computing technologies.
