The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) reiterated its commitment to drive the growth of the local creative multimedia
industry by naming export as one of the catalyst of growth. For the past six years, companies under MSC Malaysia’s Creative Multimedia Cluster (CMC) have displayed an encouraging cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) between 9-10% with companies’ revenues reaching RM6.99 billion in 2012.

In addition, Malaysia is now seen as a significant player in the creative content industry in the region. Creative contents produced by Malaysians are no longer confined to local audiences but also consumed by the expansive international audiences. This is reflected by the fact that 309 companies under CMC have collectively contributed RM487 million in exports to Malaysia’s GDP in 2012.

Speaking at the launch of the Kre8tif! Conference 2014, MDeC’s renowned conference for creative

industry players, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, the Chief Executive Officer of MDeC said “Our creative multimedia industry could achieve higher growth if we manage to effectively tap into the broader international market. The Malaysian creative multimedia industry is currently estimated to be worth around RM16 billion.

From 2011to 2012, new investments by companies under CMC increased by 32% which is equivalent to an additional RM0.3 billion to the country’s GDP. This has also resulted in the creation of 1,887 new jobs. We believe that this achievement combined with the efforts in place under the National Key Economic Area – Communications, Content and Infrastructure of the Economic Transformation Programme driven by PEMANDU, the industry is on track to contribute an additional RM35.7 billion to the
country’s GDP and create over 43,163 jobs by 2020,”.

He further concluded, “Through strategic partnerships and programmes such as MAC3, IPCC, CILL and the Master Classes, MDeC provides a conducive and enabling environment designed to enable creative companies to harness their full potential and become a source of inspiration to new companies entering the industry.”

Level 4 to Level 6 there is a change in emphasis from tutor-directed teaching within lectures and workshops to student centred independent learning.

This is reflected in a change in emphasis in Level 6 from teaching and learning through the completion of structured class activities, worksheets and assignments in Level 4 and Level 5 to the increasing involvement of students in project work where they can have considerable input into the choice of topics for investigation as well as both the design and implementation of appropriate field, lab, and literature based methods of enquiry (both individual and group based).

Directed study supports and builds upon the knowledge and skills learnt in class to provide a fuller understanding of the subject. Personal and module tutors are on hand to provide support to the students to discuss any queries, for advice on plans and initial drafts etc.

The curriculum is structured so that skills and knowledge developed lower levels can be transferred, re-applied and further developed between in the higher levels. The regular meetings which are built into the system and student appraisals ensure that students are constantly reflecting upon, adapting and enhancing their learning.

online tests, log books, exams, class tests, portfolios, group work, peer assessments and online blogs and forums where students present their work. The method of assessment for each module has been carefully considered by the teaching teams to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved balanced with maintaining academic rigour.

The majority of assessments are course work based. The award content is a mixture of theory and practice, using exams wouldn’t offer any educational benefits to the students. A number of compulsory but non assessed formative multiple choice tests are conducted in many modules. The tests are made available on LMS for a week at a time and are designed to engage the students in active learning as early as possible in the semester.

Problem based learning tasks are generally assessed the following week by peers who develop the student’s practical, theoretical, critical and analytical skills. The work has to be presented online or in class with a description on the learning and development cycle. The problems presented are outcome based and how the students get to a solution is managed with the help of the academic as the facilitator.

All these methods ensure that learning outcomes are tested in the most appropriate way; reflect the sorts of materials graduates

Many of the world’s most iconic and recogniseable designs originate in the UK. Think of the UK Union Jack flag to be found on clothing and cars, the easily recogniseable MINI car, the London Underground map which has been copied by rail systems around the world and London buses.

Fashion labels and furniture, electronics and vehicles, steam irons and kettles, toasters and tools; these are all the products of a designer with a vision and the ability to turn that into something people want to buy. Many well known designers are associated with Staffordshire University and the Staffordshire area.

The designer of arguably the most iconic products of our age, the iPad and iPhone, is an Englishman called Sir Jonathan Ive who went to school in Stafford and has a UK Product Design degree. Bentley Motor Cars are made near to the University and their designers are visiting lecturers to the University.

The designer and originator of Dyson products, Sir James Dyson is an honourary degree holder from Staffordshire University.

Dyson are world famous for products such as vacuum cleaners and the innovative range of Dyson Fans and hand dryers.

Staffordshire is also the home of the British Tableware industry where surface pattern and shape design have long been an essential part of the production of cups, mugs, plates and many other ceramic products. Perhaps the most well known is Jasper Ware by Wedgwood, ornamental products on sale in shops and airports worldwide.

One of the most successful of contemporary designs is produced by and designed by Emma Bridgwater, founder of the company of the same name, who is also a Staffordshire University honourary degree holder.

Other Staffordshire University honourary degree holders include such famous designers as Tim Smit, founder of Yanko Design, Wayne and Gerardine Hemmingway founders of Hemmingway Design and originators of the famous Red or Dead brand of clothes and shops around the world.

Hemmingway Design builds brands (the iconic label Red or Dead was the first and Vintage is the latest) and works for such as John Lewis, G Plan, Hush Puppies, Taylor Wimpey Homes, Crown Paints, Sky TV, Sainsbury’s, McDonalds, Coca Cola, and Nissan. Vehicles are represented by Staffordshire University Honourary degree holder Wing Commander Andy Green who is the current Land Speed Record holder, and the only man EVER to have travelled at supersonic speed on land.

situations – lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops (skills-based), studio work, technology packages, project work, role-plays, virtual learning environments and web-pages etc. – that best deliver the specific learning outcomes of the modules. Industrial visits and field trips will also be scheduled to provide a realistic exposure to live work environments.

In addition, PDP is used at all levels of the awards through Pebblepad or other suitable means of recording. Pebblepad allows the students to keep a record of their development throughout their award.

Students are encouraged to participate with the professional world through study visits to film, TV, VFX (visual effects) houses, games, animation and film festivals which takes place every year.

Typically modules on the Creative Industries Technology award incorporate a variety of teaching and learning approaches into their delivery and as student’s progress from Level 4 to Level 6 there is a change in emphasis from tutor-directed teaching within lectures and workshops to student centred independent learning.

This is reflected in a change in emphasis in Level 6 from teaching and learning through the completion of structured class

activities, worksheets and assignments in Level 4 and Level 5 to the increasing involvement of students in project work where they can have considerable input into the choice of topics for investigation as well as both the design and implementation of appropriate field, lab, and literature based methods of enquiry (both individual and group based).

All these methods ensure that learning outcomes are tested in the most appropriate way; reflect the sorts of materials graduates will be asked to prepare in future careers; and recognise that students have different abilities. Although the practical and skills based nature of the CGI and Digital effects award and its delivery of Staffordshire University means that the emphasis is on coursework, formal examinations and class-tests are also used to assess knowledge-based modules across all three levels.

situations

– lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops (skills-based), studio work, technology packages, project work, role-plays, virtual learning environments and web-pages etc.

This is reflected in a change in emphasis in Level 6 from teaching and learning through the completion of

structured class activities, worksheets and assignments in Level 4 and Level 5 to the increasing involvement of students in project work where they can have considerable input into the choice of topics for investigation as well as both the design and implementation of appropriate field, lab, and literature based methods of enquiry (both individual and group based).

Assessment for the 3+0 BSc (Hons) CGI and Digital Effects Degree Programme at APIIT

A range of assessment techniques are used including presentations, demonstrations, written reports, practical work, oral tests, staffordshire universityonline tests, log books, exams, class tests, portfolios, group work, peer assessments and online blogs and forums where students present their work.

Technology advanced computer facilities that include the latest PCs and workstations with Internet connection, operating systems, software suites and commercial programming software in multiple IT labs built for project work, multimedia production, software and internet programming.
