Multimedia Designers plan, design and develop the production of digitally delivered information, promotional content, instructional material and entertainment through online and recorded digital media using static and animated information, text, pictures, video and sound to produce information and entertainment tailored to an intended audience and purpose.

To work as a Digital Multimedia Designer in Malaysia you will need at least a Bachelor’s degree. Students who have just completed their SPM or IGCSE/O-Levels have the opportunity to choose either Foundation in Design, Diploma in Multimedia Design or another Pre-University programme. However, note that the Pre-University programmes do not contain any design subjects hence you will struggle in your degree programme and you will also need to study an extra semester of design courses before entering into Year 1 of the Digital Multimedia Design degree. A Diploma is more practical and the subjects are focused on design, therefore, will prepare you to handle the degree programme.

A multimedia designer uses art, sound and design skills to create video, audio and animated images. The job requires imagination and creativity coupled with technical expertise in applying a wide range of software applications. You will normally work in the creative industry, such as computer or Web marketing, advertising, social media marketing, filmmaking or television. The graphics, audio and animation skills are also commonly applied in the fields of education, advertising and software design.

In the Bachelor of Design (Digital Multimedia) degree programme, students will gain a broad and coherent understanding of contemporary design and its application to the creative industry. Generally, during your first year of study at a private university in Malaysia, you will learn design skills that will cover various disciplines such as web design, traditional and digital publishing, branding, experiential design, photography and image production.

During Year 2 and 3, they will train you to develop and deliver a range of digital media applications including projects for web, digital film and television production, interactive digital media and handheld mobile devices. In addition, students will acquire industry related skills in animation, 3D modelling, digital video, audio, media and communication design for electronic media. Students will also have an internship in the final year.

Graduates will be equipped for roles in design consultancies, design management, advertising agencies, media and entertainment studios, music video or corporate promotional video production, post-production studios, video games entertainment, online educational games or web design and development.

What is the Duration of the Digital Multimedia Degree Course?

It is a 3-year programme. Students after SPM or IGCSE/O-Levels will need to complete a Pre-University Course or Diploma before entering into the degree.

Multimedia is the combination of the 3Cs, being computer, communication and content. Technologies have now enabled computers to store and transmit text, images and sound worldwide and functioning as a “multi-media” tool such as a TV, a video, a telephone, a fax machine, an information kiosk all rolled into one, which were formerly performed separately by different media.

In short, multimedia can be defined as the combination of text, graphic, sound, animation, and video.

Multimedia/ Internet prospective is looking into two key elements – being digital and interactive. Nowadays most of the household communication and electronic devices are going digital. Being digital means these devices are becoming more intelligent with built-in computer chips. Interactivity will enable us to control the ways, time and the means of information being delivered to us. It also gives us the freedom of choice to use the devices according to our needs.

As one generation of multimedia/ computers comes to the market, the next one is in production. In a multimedia diploma or degree programme deals with the technology, design, production and delivery of multimedia products.

The course should equip the student to be competent in designing, developing and utilizing multimedia.

Multimedia designers will use computer software as well as traditional media to create animation, special effects and other graphics used in film, television, video games and websites.

For example, a web page uses a combination of audio, animation and text. You will use different software to such as Dreamweaver, Illustrator and flash to put the whole thing together.

In order to have a successful career as a Multimedia Designer, students after SPM or IGCSE O-Levels must choose to study at the best private colleges universities in Malaysia that’s accredited by MQA with years of experience and track record of winning awards.

Students after SPM or IGCSE O-Levels may go for the Foundation in Design at top private universities in Malaysia for 1 year before continuing on to the 3-year Multimedia Design degree.

With 3 credits in SPM or O-Levels in any subject, students may go for the 2.5-year Diploma in Multimedia Design and then enter into Year 2 of the degree. The Diploma in Multimedia Design is more practical and focused on the particular subjects compared to Foundation or Pre-University Programme. Furthermore, students may apply for the PTPN Loan for the Diploma.

Pre-University students with the relevant results in STPM, A-Levels, SACEi, CPU, AUSMAT, etc. can enter directly into Year 1 of the Multimedia Design degree. Students will need to submit a design portfolio and may need to take an extra semester of design subjects to enable them to handle the degree programme.

  • Pass Foundation in Design
  • Pass Foundation/Matriculation studies in related field from a recognised institution;* OR
    * Candidates from non-related field may be admitted subject to a rigorous internal assessment process.
  • Pass STPM or its equivalent with a minimum of Grade C (GPA 2.00) in any two (2) subjects; OR
  • Pass A-Level with a minimum of Grade D in any two (2) subjects; OR
  • Pass UEC with a minimum of Grade B in at least five (5) subjects inclusive of English; OR
  • Recognised Creative Multimedia Diploma or its equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.50;

Can I apply for the PTPTN Loan to Study the Bachelor of Design (Digital Multimedia)?

Students nowadays have the opportunity to complete a diploma or degree programme at a private college or university with the support of the PTPTN Loan which covers some of the tuition costs at a very low interest rate of 1%.

Courses that are accredited by the MQA can only be eligible for the PTPTN Loan. Certain exceptions are made for courses that are under Provisional Accreditation.

Most universities and colleges will have a special department and staff to help you to make all the necessary arrangements for the loan so you do not need to worry about it. They will brief you about it during Orientation

Please note that generally, you have to pay the First Semester Fees first and then apply for the loan, which would take 2-3 months to process. The loan should be given out in time for the second semester but if it doesn’t happen in time, you have to prepare the fees for the Second Semester.
